In March 1994, while on a trip to Sudan, Carter was preparing to photograph a starving toddler trying to reach a feeding centre when a hooded vulture landed nearby. Carter reported taking the picture, because it was his "job title", and leaving. He was told not to touch the children for fear of transmitting disease. He committed suicide 3 months after winning the Pulitzer Prize.[4]
On 27 July 1994 Carter drove his way to the Braamfontein near the Field and Study Centre, an area where he used to play as a child, and committed suicide by taping one end of a hose to his pickup truck’s exhaust pipe and running the other end to the driver's side window. He died of carbon monoxide poisoning, aged 33.

Looks like a goofy picture, but both kids were struck by lightning seconds later. Hair standing on end is a tell tale sign of an electrical storm nearby. For future reference, if this happens you’re suppose to crouch low to the ground and cover your ears. Don’t lie down, you want to cover as little surface area as possible

My parents took a photo on eiffel tower once. In background you can see body of girl over a girder. She was only 13 and had jumped off in front of friends to kill herself. No photo of it but a french girl on an exchange with my class jumped in front of a tgv.

The picture below was published in National Geographic in 1913, part of an otherwise beautiful series by Stefan Passe from his travels to the newly independent Mongolia. The caption is simple: A Mongolian woman condemned to die of starvation. Yet, it’s not entirely clear that starvation was the woman’s fate. Westerners had previously written of people placed in cages in Mongolian markets, where passersby could taunt and insult them as they starved. However, later reports described the cramped padlocked boxes as cells rather than methods of execution. Other reports claimed people would be locked in the boxes, unable to properly lie or sit, sometimes for years. Some of the boxes were placed in public, where people could pass the prisoner food through the small hole. Those punished for minor crimes would stay inside for one or two weeks. Given the bowls on the ground around the woman, Passe and National Geographic may have been pessimistic with their assessment of the woman’s fate.

A relatively banal moment like a family photo etc in many of them is immediately preceding a catastrophic event for those involved and in some cases, like assassin, captures the event. Shows how fickle life can be.

Chris Hondros was an American Pulitzer Prize-nominated war photographer. In 2005, he traveled to Iraq in order to cover the war. On January 18, 2005, Hondros was in Tal Afar when he witnessed a car that failed to stop at a U.S. checkpoint. U.S. Soldiers feared a suicide bomber and opened fire on the car killing both parents and injuring one of their five children.
Hondros approached the scene and captured a picture of 5-year-old Samar Hassan splattered in her parent’s blood. After the photo was published, it quickly caused controversy and was spread across the world.
Many feel the picture is the most iconic image of the Iraq War, similar to the naked Vietnamese girl screaming and running after a napalm attack. The Iraq War delivered few singular images, partly because it was too dangerous for photographers. The U.S. military also set strict rules for journalists.
In 2011, Samar Hassan looked at the picture for first time and was interviewed by the New York Times Middle East. About the incident she said that her family was in the car because her brother was sick and that they were returning from the hospital. In 2011, Samar was living on the outskirts of Mosul in a two-story house with four other families, mostly relatives. Chris Hondros was quoted about the once in a lifetime photograph: “Almost every soldier in Iraq has been involved in some sort of incident like that or another, I would say. Their attitude about it was grim, but it wasn’t the end of their world.” It was reported on April 20, 2011, that Chris Hondros and photojournalist Tim Hetherington were killed by a mortar attack in Misrata while covering the 2011 Libyan civil war.

Carl Tanzler also known as Count Carl von Cosel (February 8, 1877 – July 23, 1952) was an American radiologist of German decent who became morbidly obsessed with with one of his young patients, Elena Miagro “Helen” de Hoyos (1909 – 1931). At the time Tuberculosis was still a dreaded disease that took the lives of many who suffered it. Tanzler’s job meant that he came into a lot of contact with TB sufferers which is how he met Elena. He fell in love with her – after seeing an apparition of his future love (a dark-headed woman bearing a striking resemblance to his patient).
Despite Tanzler’s hard work, Hoyos died. Tanzler (with no arguments from the Hoyos family) paid for the funeral and the erection of an above-ground tomb for his beloved Elena; a tomb with which he would become very familiar. Every night when he finished work – when most people were at home eating dinner – Tanzler would visit Elena’s tomb; but he didn’t just lay flowers. He had a key and would let himself in and sleep beside her corpse. After six months of practicing this bizarre ritual he decided to go one step further. He stole Elena’s body from the tomb and took her to his home. The details so far are bizarre enough but Hoyos has more indignities to suffer in death.
Tanzler reconstructed Hoyos’ decomposed body by rejoining disjointed bones with piano wire and he stuffed her body with rags. He gave her glass eyes and, as her skin disintegrated, he replaced it with layers of silk soaked in wax. As her hair fell out he made her a wig with hair given to him by her mother after the funeral. He dressed her in finery and sprayed her liberally with perfume – much needed given the strong stench of decay. She spent her days and nights in his bed. He went so far in his madness as to add a tube into her vagina so he could have sex with her.

This happened during the My Lai massacre in the Vietnam War where between 347 and 504 unarmed civilians in South Vietnam on March 16, 1968 were massacred. It was committed by U.S. Army soldiers from the Company C of the 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 11th Brigade of the 23rd (Americal) Infantry Division. Victims included men, women, children, and infants. Some of the women were gang-raped and their bodies mutilated. Twenty-six soldiers were charged with criminal offenses, but only Lieutenant William Calley Jr., a platoon leader in C Company, was convicted. Found guilty of killing 22 villagers, he was originally given a life sentence, but served only three and a half years under house arrest.

On May Day, just after leaving her fiancé, 23-year-old Evelyn McHale wrote a note. ‘He is much better off without me … I wouldn’t make a good wife for anybody,’ … Then she crossed it out. She went to the observation platform of the Empire State Building. Through the mist she gazed at the street, 86 floors below. Then she jumped. In her desperate determination she leaped clear of the setbacks and hit a United Nations limousine parked at the curb. Across the street photography student Robert Wiles heard an explosive crash. Just four minutes after Evelyn McHale’s death Wiles got this picture of death’s violence and its composure. The serenity of McHale’s body amidst the crumpled wreckage it caused is astounding. Years later, Andy Warhol appropriated Wiles’ photography for a print called Suicide (Fallen Body).

Walter Jackson Freeman II was an American doctor and member of the American Psychiatric Association. Although he is the only one on our list who hasn’t performed a direct criminal practice on his patients, he can be blamed for harming as many as 3,400 people by using a very controversial and primitive medical technique: the lobotomy.
His operations were performed by inserting a metal pick into the corner of each eye socket, moving it back and forth, and thereby severing the connections to the pre-frontal cortex in the frontal lobes of the brain.
This method did not require a neurosurgeon and could be performed outside of an operating room without the use of anesthesia. Freeman actually used his personal van as a surgery room, which he called the “lobotomobile”.
Dr. Freeman was finally banned from performing surgery after the death of some of his patients from brain hemorrhage.

"Russayev asked, Why not refuse? According to the authors, Komarov answered: "If I don't make this flight, they'll send the backup pilot instead." That was Yuri Gagarin. Vladimir Komarov couldn't do that to his friend. "That's Yura," the book quotes him saying, "and he'll die instead of me. We've got to take care of him." Komarov then burst into tears."

Basically it was thought of as a cure-all for all types of mental diseases and proclivities. When done right, it usually left the patient with a very flat personality. When it was done wrong, the person was more or less a vegetable.

Ones I've met in and out of prison vary greatly. You can tell some are just cold hearted and don't care/don't show it. Many did it under the influence of drugs so it's not some detached action. Some were heat of the moment kills and they look like the sort of person who would scream if they heard a plate drop.
In other words, same as normal people, you can't tell by a face.

Carl Tanzler also known as Count Carl von Cosel (February 8, 1877 – July 23, 1952) was an American radiologist of German decent who became morbidly obsessed with with one of his young patients, Elena Miagro “Helen” de Hoyos (1909 – 1931). At the time Tuberculosis was still a dreaded disease that took the lives of many who suffered it. Tanzler’s job meant that he came into a lot of contact with TB sufferers which is how he met Elena. He fell in love with her – after seeing an apparition of his future love (a dark-headed woman bearing a striking resemblance to his patient).
Despite Tanzler’s hard work, Hoyos died. Tanzler (with no arguments from the Hoyos family) paid for the funeral and the erection of an above-ground tomb for his beloved Elena; a tomb with which he would become very familiar. Every night when he finished work – when most people were at home eating dinner – Tanzler would visit Elena’s tomb; but he didn’t just lay flowers. He had a key and would let himself in and sleep beside her corpse. After six months of practicing this bizarre ritual he decided to go one step further. He stole Elena’s body from the tomb and took her to his home. The details so far are bizarre enough but Hoyos has more indignities to suffer in death.
Tanzler reconstructed Hoyos’ decomposed body by rejoining disjointed bones with piano wire and he stuffed her body with rags. He gave her glass eyes and, as her skin disintegrated, he replaced it with layers of silk soaked in wax. As her hair fell out he made her a wig with hair given to him by her mother after the funeral. He dressed her in finery and sprayed her liberally with perfume – much needed given the strong stench of decay. She spent her days and nights in his bed. He went so far in his madness as to add a tube into her vagina so he could have sex with her.

The conditions weren’t ideal for the race because it was warm that day and the ice was melting causing the wood that made up the track to be exposed, making it very dangerous for sledders. Jimmy was driving the four man bobsled and it crashed coming out of a turn, slamming Jimmy’s head into the wall. John dropped his headset and ran to his brother’s side and accompanied him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

When I was enlisted I remember DIs telling us during swim qual that when drowning, people will literally drown each other in survival panic and thats why it was so important to be competent in the water, especially for water rescues when trying to rescue a geared up and possibly injured Marine.
He said if they panicked and survival mode kicked in they instinctively try and climb you to keep themselves from drowning, effectively pushing you under.
Must be what happened here. Would have been fine id they separated and swam upwards, instead they panicked and drowned each other....

When I was enlisted I remember DIs telling us during swim qual that when drowning, people will literally drown each other in survival panic and thats why it was so important to be competent in the water, especially for water rescues when trying to rescue a geared up and possibly injured Marine.
He said if they panicked and survival mode kicked in they instinctively try and climb you to keep themselves from drowning, effectively pushing you under.
Must be what happened here. Would have been fine id they separated and swam upwards, instead they panicked and drowned each other....
Sad.
was always told that if you can swim and they cant when they start grabbing on to you go under water...they will let you go!!!

When I went through boot that is exactly what happened to me. Whit man can't jump, black man can't swim. I stepped from dive board into the pool, slowly came to the surface only to have a large dark green recruit use me for a buoy. It seemed like forever me trying to fight him off. I'd come up he'd climb on top of me. I would go back under, this repeated at least three time until a couple swing instructors jumped in. The two of them grabbed him and pushed him under asking him how it felt. I threaded water and watched until they noticed me treading and yelled at me to finish swim qual. In my mind I thought I could get a restart but no. I had to finish after all that, I was literally exhausted when I got tot the end of the pool. The instructor on the end point in the direction for me to go which was successful completion of the course. Big relief.

It's no coincidence that buddhist monks use this method of protest. These guys practice how to meditate/leave their bodies/feel no pain/concentrate all their inner power into one part of their body at a time/go into deep trances etc etc from like 4 years old.
I'm sure he went FULL MONK MODE before lighting that gas lol.
