Title: IFBB Men's Figure - You knew it was coming
Post by: Tre on February 13, 2006, 11:50:18 AM
As predicted, the "Classic Bodybuilding" division is now a reality in the IFBB and will be contested at this year's Men's World Amateur Championships.

Is this a sad statement about bodybuilding today or does this have the potential to grow the industry for everyone?

The men's figure/fitness has been going on in Europe for about 4 years now. From my understanding some countries could not get recognized as a sport and receive federal funding the bodybuilding route. Now, they are...for instance Greece is now a "recognized" sport and all top athletes are getting pay checks when they medal at International events such as the Balkan Championships, European Championships, World Championships..etc.

I think not only will it have no appeal that i can see it will also futher damage the image of the sport. i mean joe public already thinks of the average BB as a fag this will not help one bit!

Nabba has had a Athletic division for years now , and to be honest what I have seen of it it is pathetic( no disrespect to the athletes), but all it seems to be to me is a class for guys whom just arnt big enough to cut it in the physique class, then you have confusion over the 2 classes as sometimes the athletic winner looks better than the physique winner of similar stature ??
It is a bad move and they should be concentrating on fixing the exsisting problems and not adding new ones !!

Then they are calling it "The Classic Class" now whats classic , I think Dorian was Classic !!!

But it's not gay to compete in bbing competitions? Why, cause they're bigger?

Hmmm........

The funny part is that society would much rather have the type of body that will be displayed in men's figure than IFBB bodybuilding.

That is so true - but unfortunately, the mens figure/athletic or whatever you wanna call it, is extremely popular  :-\ much more so than physique, as it is easily achieved.  the amount of guys they get competing is unbelievable - so I'm not too surprised the ifbb has finally introduced this as this will probably mean huge $$$$ for them in terms of competitors and fees they will receive.

Militia and 1Fast nailed it - you're going to see a lot of guys competing in this division over the next few years.  More competitors = more money for federations and promoters, so it will definitely become a permanent part of the landscape here in North America, as it has already in Europe.

I'm totally cool with it as long as the guys don't walk around the shows with their lats flared out trying to appear 'tough'.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one seeing this for what it is  :P

It's bad enough watching guys walking around all puffed up with the "imaginary lat syndrome" just cause they train and think they are bb's (mind you none of them have ever stepped on stage or ever will - not to mention that they have no back).  Nothing more pathetic or funny IMO.  Last we need to see are the "fitness" guys walking around the same way with the same attitude  ;D

On the other hand, I could do with a good laugh watching these pathetic fools!

it wont be long until these guys just start to blend in.  It will just be a little behind on the scale of bodybuilding evolution.

the number of men entering bodybuilding contests is down significantly from 20-30 years ago.  the reason is simple:  most guys don't want to do the amount of GH and insulin required to compete in the NPC.  this athletic or classic division simply allows people to be judged more on symmetry and proportionality rather than mass at all cost.

On the other hand, I could do with a good laugh watching these pathetic fools!

how is looking like a top bodybuilder from the 1970s being a fool?

Seriously though, is the intention to make an "aesthetic" divison where athletes such a Darreem Charles, Melvin Anthony, Milos Sarcev, and Francis Benfatto will be rewarded or is it really just going to be a male-model queer boy contest?

horrible idea imo.  fix some of the judging standards curently and leave it at that.   thats fine if there is a "model" division but it should be completely separated from bbing.

yeah, nabba does it & its quit popular in europe.

If it's the gay dollar that keeps bodybuilding alive, how come the smaller ("classic") bodybuilders seem so gay to us. Women usually prefer the smaller guys, while gay or straight men prefer the huge bodybuilders.

I'm sure they'll be walking around with their hands flared out.  We have a few at our gym, they all dance between sets to their Techno and disappear off to the showers for hours.
