I remember reading those ads when they came out (I still have some of those old back issues)

For a youngster (like I was) just getting involved in weight training, you can bet those ads looked enticing !

I remember seeing ad with that bar with the spring in the middle.  You bent the ends together to build a big chest.  I figured I could do the same with a garage door spring and it worked.  I saved all kinds of money.
