i just moved to NYC and really want to find a decent gym (including a pool, if possible). i work in lower manhattan and live in central brooklyn (flatbush area). any recommendations? i'm also looking for a personal trainer.
(sorry to post this question here, as it's probably not very relevant. it's just that i can't think of anywhere else to post it. any other ideas of where to ask?)

jon not sure you will find a gym in nyc with a pool..i dont know of any as I do live in lower east side..i sent u a pm..good luck with your search
-
Well you can go to Ballys...im sure they have a special with no binding contract now in the city (cause of competetion)... There is one on 6th Ave b/t 19th and 20th. So you prob take the Path up there from WTC. Ummmthere are these gyms called David Z... i went there cause i had a coupon, those are real high class gyms ..lots of models and moviestar types , (plus alot of homos) not really the gritty type of gym ..kinda expensive. Plus there is also NYSC... not sure where but there are a few.

There is a Bally's on Flatbush and Tilden but that doesn't have a pool. The Bally's in Sheapshead bay does, I am not sure which train runs there.
The NYSC downtown Brooklyn has an indoor tennis court, no pool. There is a private gym in Canarsie near to me which has 2 pools.
I work in the lower manhattan and work out at the Wall Street NYSC (no pool).

dude if you want a gym with a pool then you're looking for a health club...
a gym shouldn't even have aerobics!
-
the ballys on 19th and 6th ave. is just a regular gym nothing special about it

Not in Manhattan, especially not mid-town or downtown. I am not sure about uptown.
There are two in Brooklyn. The one downtown Brooklyn doesn't have one. I am not sure about the one in Sheapshead bay.

World Gym on Mercer St. Between Bleecker and W 4th St. Went there for about a year or so. John Basedow went there at the time, so I guess you can rule it out as a hardcore gym. I think it was $700 for the year. I'm glad I don't live in Manhattan anymore with their inflated price bullshit. Good luck.

There are a couple of good gyms in the wall street area, one just off Broadway across from city hall, the other at 80 John street, closer to the seaport. Neither has a pool.
Go to bigger gyms uptown if a pool's necessary-23rd and 14th street:
Chelsea Piers, 23rd at the west side highway.
A chain of city-run gyms in manhattan, brooklyn and other borroughs that are a bargain. Join and have access to all of them. Here are some that have pools:
-23rd street east at FDR.
-25th street west between 9th & 10th ave.-very nice, brand new and not as crowded as 23rd.
List of NY-area gyms:
http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_things_to_do/recreation_centers/rc_rc_by_borrough.html
The 14th street YMCA has a pool but is a lot more money than the city gyms and doesn't have the room or variety of Chelsea Piers.

I walked in AND OUT of that shitty gym in 2 seconds flat. What a rat hole, one of the worse gyms I've ever seen. The sales guy at the desk smiled after I took the "tour" and asked "whatta ya think?"
I mumbled "uh not for me" and high tailed it out of there before I caught something. I'm surprised that it stayed open for as long as it did.
Try mid city over on 49th and 8th, it's kinda small but really cheap and rarely crowded.
