Congratulations to Team MD athletes Lee Priest and David Henry for placing 1 and 2 at the Ironman Pro. What a great start to the new season. The morning after the show I got Lee and Dave together to shoot with Per Bernal for our next (May) cover. They deserve it! I hope you like it!

Cara and Steve I know your reading this ---- it is a cool cover , your photographer is awesom and seems to be getting better and better and he is a nice guy, met him in LA with Lee (if its the same guy) but I was wondering just for intrest sake , would you ever contemplate putting a female bodybuilder on the cover or would that be just to much of a risk these days due to the public preception ??

Yes, your covers are good. But your magazine as of late has sucked, so much so that I no longer buy it. It's time to go back to what worked...bring back the girls, cut down on the useless articles on crap nobody reads and get your edge back. Who cares if the mag is bigger if it's full of uninteresting articles?
Your mag used to be fun to read, and was distinct. But now it's bland and boring. Per Bernal is awesome, however. Your contest coverage is good except for the blatent bias to MD athletes.

Honestly, that is a great cover. A bodybuilding magazine giving the front cover to the two top placers at the Ironman Pro contest, the first IFBB Pro contest of the year. It gives kudos to the competitors knowing that there is something for placing in the top two, it gives the Ironman Pro show soem props, and it is good for bodybuilding all around.
How many times have you seen a magazine pushing bodybuilding with no bodybuilder on the cover. Props to MD for putting them on... and the pictures look great.

I am highly not a fan of the recent Gustavo cover which was in two pieces. Not cool to do that just for a few bucks in advertisement, but I still bought it, so it's not like I applied any pressure on MD as a consumer to change that, so they will probably do it again.
I plan to review that whole magazine, article by article. I'll put it up here when it's done:

^I doubt Henry will ever be able to meet or surpass the standards Lee Priest has set.
I think it's genetics......but it might have something to do with AAS dosage or desire.
Who knows.......
I just think Priest is virtually untouchable for a man of his size.
Probably the best arms in bodybuilding, period.

I think the cover is great and the content too. More in depth and truthful while being topical and educational than the other mags.
It is funny how many armchair publishers exist in cyberspace, but none put any money where their laptop is and publish a magazine while paying the writers, models and athletes. Steve - right on!

The ONLY thing worth reading is the training articles of the pro's because they're still somewhat close to the truth. But the nutrition articles? Non existent. You have all these harsh ghost written articles by 'the pros'....at least FLEX makes it so obvious that you know it's bullshit.
As a matter of fact I can provide an article from "Dexter Jackson" that is a direct copy if not in exact words but CONTENT that was LIFTED FROM a Chris Aceto nutrtional column from FLEX three months earlier!
What, you couldn't find anthing else to write about so you go to FLEX of all sources to copy? CLASSIC move.
Tack on tons of boring pages with Romano going on and on ad naseum about the Balco scandal (three months out of date, get it here on getbig for free!) and Gregg GOYA BEANS Valentino and you have a BORING mag, overpriced at that.
Tack on some reprinted and rehashed articles for the first half of the mag yet remove the funny cartoons....and take away the chicks that you used to feature and what do you get?.....MD.
SNORE....ps, I do put my money where my mouth is...and maybe if you guys put out a better product I'd still be buying it instead of flipping through it on the stand and putting it BACK. MD has NEVER printed an actual article on contest prep, diet or supplement regimes in the last 3 years.
GOYA BEANS and SHITTING YOUR PANTS are what sells MD. Be proud!

I think it is an excellent BODYBUILDING cover. My take on MD is that for most of the past year or so it is the best mag overall on avg each month. The covers are real bodybuilders and I like that.
Ok here is my 2 cents on MD overall as 47 yr old fart and physics teacher.
Pro/ thumbs up aspects
1. Articles by John Ramano. Seriously, I enjoy his style and topics.He is one of the people in the sport I would like to meet and never had the chance.
2. MD covers the sports "as is".
3. Actual scientific articles on nutrition and training excerpted from various journals.
4. Great pics of many top pros.
5. A variety of pros columns with intersting topics in them.
6. Does mostly pro and some NPC contest coverage. The contests are the competetive end of the sport and MD seems to understand that.
7. While I was bummed out that MD had to scrap the "All Natural MD" format in the mid 90's. I don't blame them. The natural end of bodybuilding, never really took off and is just "there" in limbo withot much hype or excitement. I actually got to ask the man himself , Steve Bleckman, about that former natural MD format at the recent NPC nationals. He said what I already figured, that the natural thing just never took off despite their efforts. They cover the sport as is.Steve has been around in this game, ya gotta respect his judgement and experience.
8. Huge mag that is thick with actual bodybuilding related content.
9. Lee Priests column and features. the guys has gained fans and respect for his no holds barred style.
Like it or not Lee just puts it out there and does not mince words. I like that.
10. No lame swimsuit or lingerie bimbo feaures. If I want to look at jack off pics, I can do that outside the bodybuilding mags. I read bodybuilding mags for bodybuilding and enjoy other sites for the fun pics hehe.
Con/ thumbs down :(
1. "The ramblin' freak ",I have nothing against Greg V, but cringe at the idea that this kind of thinking and physique distortion is part of the current bodybuilding landscape. I sometimes skim his column, and even chuckle a bit at times. I have mixed feelings on just how serious Gregg V takes himself or his image.
Overall, he is not hurting anyone and seems like a funny dude, etc. If he has fans that read his column I guess it serves a purpose. However, since the guy never really won any major show and has such a distorted body, I don't see the need for his column in MD.
2. The endless pages of ads. Not a big deal and hey they gotta pay the rent. Some f the more way out supplements ads are good for a laugh. As a person that has read lots of scientific journals over the years, the "scientific theories and facts" in some of these supplement ads are more like wacky science FICTION.
3. In my opinion MD needs more pics of guys training in the gym, doing actual workouts. I think a lot of folks would like to see this kind of thing more.
4. MD can give in to a bit of the thug side of the sport at times. I am glad they are so damn honest and candid about the drug issue in bodybuilding. But it seems to me they tend to glorify that "lifestyle" a tad too much at times. C'mon MD, with Titus, Martinez and Palumbo, you have 3 regulars that spent time in the slammer. While I don't mind them being a given a chance to write for the mag, I do mind it when Palumbo or others give so many shout outs to the bros in the joint.I wonder what Titus will do now?
Instead of the MD Titus talks he could start doing " Titus Squeals" , and feature tales of prison rape and sodomy :o
Ok so overall if you are a musclehead like moi, MD is a decent mag. I will subscribe again this month.
FLEX has some great contest coverage , but I cringe when they attempt to "sanitize" the image of current bodybuilding.
5. Sriously RE-consider your stance on NOt covering female bodybuilding. At least cover the contests and include one female bodybuilding training article. New Pro and NPC national womans champ Mimi Jabalee would be a good choice.

MD has a lot of great reading.
I think they could try look for a MD angle on Iron Age bodybuilders too, a throwback section, department with articles, new and old, with them fellas who kicked ass in the old days.
It could be really good, if the layout is kept in line (something which Musclemag and Ironman tends to fail at).
Quark or Indesign? I'm guessing Indesign, many of the things done in the mag are hard to do with Quark.

...what I mean to say is that you won't find an actual "how to" article in MD for the last 3 years. You might find some partial info here and there, but not ONE article with all that info there. In effect it's a bb'ing mag thats aimed at the 'scene', not the average joe in the gym. FLEX does this though, even if the workouts are a little on the high volume side.
And if MD is soooooo open about covering the drug side of bb'ing, then why doesn't it talk more about that? If they're gonna be hardcore as they say, print the shit! Don't give me that "protect the kids" bullshit when you got Gregg the Idiott talking about shitting his pants, jerking off and Goya Beans. It don't make sense.
As "hardcore" as MD fakes it is, it follows the mainstream harder than any other mag...got rid of the chicks not because of the 'keeping it real' stance, but to increase where you can buy the mag (grocery stores, more mainstream outlets)....plus, it costs dollars to pay for the chicks and they didn't wanna pay.
MD could be the BEST mag out there but they just got boring. How many pages upon pages of Romano ramble can one take?
And they quickly canned the awesome Flex Wheeler behind the stories articles (Dillett's too) because they were too REAL. You wanna get the kids not to do roids? PRINT THOSE STORIES, not turn a blind eye like FLEX mag! Any street kid is gonna understand those real darkside stories and it will do much more to prevent steroid abuse, in my opinion.
To end up, you can use FLEX for nutrition info and even some training info if you're a trainer....MD lacks in that area.

Not wank sessions like the sandwichs "interview" with colette nelson, but serious stuff like the top girls answering questions in their own columns like the guys do. Being a female reader I like reading how the guys train, and their take on things, but I wish someone would give a serious forum like that to the girls. They work just as hard, and the only other mags that want them present them as freakshow porn bimbos. Chads article on how sick the scene can be makes for depressing reading. Give them a chance to present themselves as the athletes they are.
i'll still keep reading MD as is tho. But as a female reader, thats what I'd like to see more of.

Actually I suggested to Blechman yesterday that we should include a "Female Gym Rat" column in MD. In my opinion, a good "author candidate" is a person who have a hard-core bodybuilding OR fitness/figure background (the only major difference between bb and fitness/figure is the abuse of steroids) as well as scientific training in execise physiology and/or nutritional sciences (or something), so one female-specific column would cover both practical and scientific aspects.

I know beggars cant be choosers, and all that. But in my opinion, the fitness and figure girls have enough exposure on the go already. I mean the BB girls. The magazine focusses on muscle, so why not give the ladies on the cutting edge of human female muscle physiology a forum. Focus on their workouts and diet, the sacrifices they make in their lives to achieve their goals. I'd love to see Per Bernals photos of these girls.
If you want a forum by women academics, have an academic forum like Dr Colker offers the guys. If it works and there's interest, then add a fitness girl gym rat down the track. In the time I have been reading the only articles on BB women I've seen have been Colette Nelson( which was more about the sandwich's issues about her becoming too big for him to want to shag her), an interview with Nicole Bass and a photo pictorial of Lenda Murray. As well as the odd picture turning up in the photo page compiled by John Romano. (I've missed the odd issue, but hey)
I love how the guys are treated in MD. Just wanting to see you give the BB girls the same respect is all.

I bought one flex, thought it was the biggest piece of shit ever and ever since then never read a bb mag.

Sounds a like a plan. :) Who would write such a column? Obviously, the author must be female with some kind of bb background. Also, she should have basic knowledge of exercise physiology, nutrition, etc. Any suggestions?

I would think that by including coverage of figure that would increase sales. To me, there seems to be a million figure girls. It might also help attract more advertisers - suit makers, fitness camps etc.
I am probably pushing my luck...but why not cover all aspects of female physique shows on a small level? As far as columns... You have someone like Tracey Greenwood, who apart from being a top competitor, also has a PHd in exercise physiology [I think]. Maybe a column on fitness routine skills [I am a fitness girl so excuse my bias :P] I know she is not a pro but Jodi Miller is exceptionally articulate. You have the icons of the past - Cory, Rachel, Bev etc. The 'legends' Monica, Lenda, Kim... Plus, like you do with the guys, the top competitors now - Jenny, Adela, Mary etc.
Or maybe it is an option to have your present columnists to combine to do a section for females. Charles Glass talking about training for routines, Chad doing nutrition etc..
Whatever happens though, I am pleased MD is even considering it. Thanks for that.Remember we girls are potential customers as well :D

I keep thinking of MD being a mag for hardcore muscle. Male and female, except they rarely show the female side of it. I know a lot of readers are still hung up on Brandy Dahl and the lingerie/nudie era, but the muscle girls need a respected forum to pull them out of the funk the scene is in. Put a BB girl next to your average woman, and its extreme. Put her next to a figure girl, still extreme. It changes slightly if its a fitness girl, as both are ripped in competition mode: it's just a matter of degree. The only context these girls would not look out of place in, is next to the male muscle freaks in MD. There they would look diminutive, and feminine versions of the guys, and there they would not look wrong. There the muscle can be looked at and compared between the best both genders have to offer. The big guys may have issues with what people would think, and they all seem to have partners who are "normal" in terms of muscle. But I'm sure they are professional enough to "get" it, and work with it.
And remember, they dont have to shag it, just respect it, and let them share some of the spotlight.
MD has both Chad Nichols and Charles Glass in place on the staff. Both of these guys have inside knowledge to offer on the women athletes and can write about it from "experience". Both can suggest women in the field who have the knowledge to answer in depth questions on BB for women. Colette Nelson is a qualified nutritionist, and I'm sure there are others. I dont have a problem with fitness girl gym rats having a say as well. But BB girls are closer to the MD ethos though.
Hardcore muscle. Muscular Development can walk its talk and crank it up to a whole new level. Its what the scene is missing, and that's respect.

How "nice" of him. There was a time when he actually put female bodybuilders on the covers of his magazine. I have an issue of MD....or should I say, MDFH (Muscular Development-Fitness-Health) with Melissa Coates on the cover.....ALL BY HERSELF!!. The mag itself has a multi-page article on Coates and even came with a dual-sided poster.
Of course, that was nearly 10 years ago. Now, after abandoning female bodybuilders (and legitimate fitness competitors) for "I-Can't-Believe-They're-Not-Porn-Stars" girls, Blechman may devote ONE WHOLE COLUMN to female bodybuilding. Ain't that sweet!!

Most of your readers were males 10 years ago. That has no bearing on the issue, whatsoever.
My point was that having one column is no monumental feat, especially when female bodybuilders used to be on the covers of MDFH. Even when draped around male bodybuilders, at least the female contingent was there.
And, going back to the example I used, there was an entire article, and a dual-sided poster for that particular female bodybuilder.

Thanks! We got that site done in 3 days and it's already had something like 20,000 hits in the first week. Rhino has quite a big fan base from the boards. He's doing a photoshoot and hooking up with Wayne tomorrow. I should have some new pics up soon.

It's not Blechman's fault, as I have simply not officially subscribed to the mag.....YET! I am though. I like they way P. Bernal shoots. B&W's come out sweet!

No need for "smootching" or a need for a personal column. I just like the mag and that is why I buy it. There are lots of mags I buy because I like to read. TIME magazine is my favorite though! Now, I wish I could have a column in there.

All I meant is that you seem a little too self-conscious (in a "i know I'm not all that" way) to engage in the kind of blatant self-promotion/showboating that some people (some with half your physique) shamelessly engage in.
I'd link to a certain thread as an example, but I think enough people have already taken the person in it to task, so I don't want to pile on.
Arnold: "I'm the greatest, my physique is perfect." and it worked for him.
RJ: "I know I have lots of areas to improve, and I'm working on them."
You have to do what feels right to you, but having a 240 type to do your publicity for you wouldn't hurt.

I guess what's important is to get the girls into the information stream and update their practices and training regimes, and discuss how they can best do it safely. We know the risks for the guys, how about highlighting the safest way for the constant "experiment" on muscle and what it can do and its aesthetics for the women. A top notch forum for being the best you can be is an excellent start. As a fan, the BB girls deserve it. I'd love to hear how they're doing, and what their lives are like. This concern started for me when I heard about an Italian BB girl who died a little while ago. It started me wondering about how little is known about the effects of a BB lifestyle on the women, and the price they pay for what they love to do.
Give them a voice, more options, and a context as an athlete deserving respect. By shining a light on BB women and offering more opportunities, the assholes ruining the lifestyle by offering money for "photos" and other sick shit will hopefully bugger off. I'm just glad doing something real for BB girls is back on the table.

If I remember well, MD and Weider were fighting to get Richard signs with them when he turned pro.
But then he plast last I think at his first O and nobody talks about him in the mags now.
