Gyms make most their money on older members. Gotta keep 'em happy. They always ask me, "can you turn the noise down"  Hard rock isn't music to them, it's just noise.

If it were up to me the gym would be silent and those who wanted to change that could do so via personal music players.

(That way I don't have to listen to anything I don't want to)

I annoy all in my gym by turning off whatever is being played and putting pennywise up full blast! (not a great band but the album "about time" is by far the best thing to train to)

I think a silent gym might have more awkward moments.
with chatterbox background music, people are less likely to have to engage in conversation.

Golds around here plays a lot of 80s music.  Even tho it's cheesy, Warrant or Poison beat out a lot of the rap garbage on the radio today.

I'm stuck at a rec center for a little while but the gyms around me play some pretty horrible music.  There was a new powerhouse that opened up right by my old house and they had all these tv's around and every few minutes you would here "powerhouse TV!!"  it was annoying as hell.  Worlds is just as bad in the mornings they play light stuff, evenings it's ok.  There are 2 hardcore gyms in my area and they both play good stuff.  The rec center plays mostly adult contemporary stuff so I bought a MP3 player and change it around every few days.
Funniest thing I heard about music was a guy on another board told the people behind the counter that the music they were playing was actually making his muscles smaller...

not only does the golds gym network play bad music  (theres tvs everywhere, so its actually the music videos theyre playing), but they also play commercials for golds.  as if the fucking people there arent already members, whats the point of advertising inside the gym?  then this little cartoon thing pops on the screen that tells you to remember to use a spotter and to re-rack your weights.  ugh.

a music setup like metroflex seems ideal, alternating hard rock with rap played off of original CDs.  no way that'd fly with the pussies at my golds tho.

i also have a mp3 player, but it requires making playlists and periodic re-organization which takes time.  sometimes id rather just have good music over speakers.
