i think in his prime he had one of the best physiques ever. except maybe his biceps. he was ahead of his time. just wondering what he's up to these days

Gary was the first guy I ever saw guest pose.
He was massive and just did front and side poses during his routine. I thought he HAD to be better than Lee Haney.
Once I saw a video of him in the olympia I understood the problem.
Gary had 2/3 of the best body ever.
back and biceps never cut it though especially back.

I was gonna say...
Someone on here (crownshep?) posted a pic from FLEX magazine's coverage of the 1988 Mr. Olympia, Strydom's first and only Olympia appearance. The pic showed Strydom and Haney doing a side-by-side back double bicep comparison and the caption read, "Haney shows Strydom the meaning of 'winged victory.'" That pic pretty much said it all. BTW, Strydom placed 5th.

I heard from a very reliable source that he's real heavy into synthol now. Which is a shame, he used to be a very attractive man.

I just don't get it...everytime I see that Haney/ Strydom pic, I don't see how those could be the same person! His back looks fairly thick from the fron in some of those shots but he looks like an infant from the back.

Gary did suck down pretty low for the 88.
A better cpmarison is the grand prix of 89 where him and mike christian went head to head in 5 shows with mike winning 3. Gary was massive in that series but mike still smoked him from behind even with no calves and weak legs.

At least he never did the insulin/growth route and ended up bitter, broke, or dead or ugly like most of these guys.

McFarland doesn't have the genetics for it, yet for some reason he keeps beating his head against the wall juicing and participating in teh "venice lifestyle". ::)

it depends if you are looking at shots of Gary from that contest in particular. Gary was competing around 250-260 for his first couple of years as a pro. Prior to that olympia he had to qualify at the last show before the O. He lost to Phil Williams, williams was pretty much shredded and Gary was plain old Huge but not as cut as he could have been. Gary decided it was in his best interest to get totally ripped, like he was when he won the nationals-at about 225lbs. So Gary dropped a ton of weight in like 2 weeks and lost all of his back size, from the front he looked pretty amazing-totally freakin ripped but from the back he just didn't maintain his size enough to hang with Haney. I would love to see a back shot of Gary from when he won his WBF shows.

Thanks, that's the one! Even though Strydom may have been unusually "sucked down" for that show, his front and back double-bicep poses were never terribly impressive, unlike his "crunching" poses from the front which showcased his strong delts, chest & triceps.

another case of the paul dillet syndrome. but since gary was before paul, you could call it the gary strydom syndrome.
besides, what's the point of wearing a hair piece if everyone knows that it's fake.

There is no doubt that at the time (1988) Strydom's back was a big weakness for him, but to be fair to the guy that (often posted) shot was taken when the he was probably in transition in hitting the rear double bi pose.
His back, though still not in Haney's league, did get much better in the early 1990s when he competed for the WBF, and his front shots probably bettered Haney's .

Gary has that blond surfer dude image to maintain, so the toupee helped.....hmmmmmmmm! anyone else know someone who maintains that illusion? lol
