Curious,
Aside from Ricky Steamboat, has anyone remained a total face or heel for their entire run?
Cena was a heel, Goldberg actually started as a heel as well....

JYD maybe?
Vader and Psycho Sid were always heels that I can recall.
Has Sting ever been a heel? (maybe with the blade runners?)
-
Sid had a brief, but lame run in the Fed as "Sid Justice," a face.

I'm still trying to erase the from my memory....

dusty rhodes?backlund until that corny bow tie wearing gimmick with the 'chicken wing performed with a phsyco persona'
-
Ultimate Warrior was face for his entire WWF run, all 3567656 of them.
he was heel back in 1986 in the UWF though.
-
Did Rick Rude ever work baby face?
-
Did Rick Rude ever work baby face?
I feel like he did at one point, but you know it could be just because I liked him as a douchebag telling all the fat, lazy, trailer trash men to shut up while he shows the women what a real man looks like.
-
Did Rick Rude ever work baby face?
I don't think he did. He worked a heel stable in WCCW, was heel in JCP and heel in WWF/WWE. When he went back to WCW before he died he was heel there too.

Bruno.

Bruno.
Wow, you're right!
Such an obvious one I can't believe none's mentioned until now.

iron sheik was a long time heel.was he ever a face in other territories?

Yup...we both got "outted" on that one by our good friend Lizzy. I forgot about him.

Thanks, Guys. It helps to be older with stuff like this.
I'm sure most, here, are too young to remember:
Pedro Morales ;)
And, the guy who was easily my favorite wrestler when I was a kid:
Wait for it
Chief Jay Strongbow ;) ;)

i remember Strongbow, but just barely.

i remember Strongbow, but just barely.
Another I remember was Ivan Putski.
The reason I can name so many is that faces rarely turned back then.
When Zybysko turned on Bruno, it was like the end of the world. I think that one started the trend, at least in Vinceworld.
It happened a lot during the Hogan era. Poor Hulkster could never keep a friend: Macho, Orndorff, Andre. I'm probably forgetting several.
Another is Tito Santana.
I don't recall Tony Atlas as a heel in WWE either.

Italian, Joe Scarpa.
Went on to have a good career as a road agent throughout the 80's.
Supposedly was never the same after falling asleep watching his grandchild who drowned in their swimming pool after Jay fell asleep while babysitting.

Did Ivan Koloff ever turn face?
I know Nikita did, but Ivan?

Atlas has a phenomenal build...just unreal and way ahead of his time. Youtube Tony Atlas circa 1978-1982 and you'll see what I mean.

During a Tony Atlas match, I called my mother into the room and said, "Look at that guy!! That's what I wanna look like!"
To which, Mom responded, "He's Black!"
Perceptive woman, my mother. ;D

Did Rick Rude ever work baby face?
during his jobber days he was a kind of "face" jobber...usually losing to heels
-
Did Ivan Koloff ever turn face?
I know Nikita did, but Ivan?
Ivan had a brief face run in 1988, having reconciled with his "nephew," but that was about the time Nikita's first wife Mandy died so Nikita was out...Ivan was paired with The Junkyard Dog at Starcade vs The Russian Assasins (mgd by Number One Paul Jones)...Jim Crockett, discussing the match the following week said, "...the Assasins won, but Ivan and JYD proved to be a fine team." oh, brother ::)

In old school WWF, the heels didn't hang around that long. The main eventers would have a run with Bruno, Pedro or Backlund, and then be gone.
The longest heel runs would be the managers as they could latch on to whom ever arrived on the scene.
So, you had the Three Wise Men: Albano, Wizard and Blassie, and later, The Brain.

That's basically how it worked back in the territory days. A new heel would come in, squash jobbers for 10 weeks straight, have a main event 6 month run with the world champion, collect 200 grand in that time and move on to the next territory. Guys never got old or stale.

Face, for sure.
That you have to think about it, speaks volumes about the gimmick. :'(

I was only joking...it was soo bad I tried to erase it from my mind. Speaking of, for the older folks, remember when Atlas and Johnson won the WWE titles from Wild Samoans?? I have heard on numerous occassions that Johnson hated Atlas, didnt get along which is why their run was soo short...
-
jyd?he wrestled other territories as well..ever a heel?i remember him as a face..
-
Face, for sure.
That you have to think about it, speaks volumes about the gimmick. :'(
What also speaks volumes is that the main thing people remember is Roddy Piper immediately killing the gimmick (Toooneeeeee Atlas)

Littleguns mentioned Ricky Steamboat in the first post.
Rick has told the story that, after 17 years in the business, he wanted to experience being a heel before hanging it up and approached Pat Patterson about it. Pat told him, "Ricky, you're just a face. You can never be a bad guy."

For some crazy reason, I just cannot picture Ricky Steamboat as a heel. I just don't think he's mean enough. He was always the ultimate face...more than Hogan in his Hulkamania hayday.

The closest I ever saw Ricky Steamboat to having a mean streak was a match during his Jake Roberts fued (a match after the concrete DDT indicent) when Steamboat had been counted out of the ring and after the bell continued to pummel Roberts while holding onto his hair, even threatening the ref. That, and maybe the 1978 Mid-Atlantic incident where he beat the crap out of Ric Flair and tore his suit off, leaving Flair in tighty whiteys.

Abdullah the Butcher. Don't think he was ever a face.
Stan Hansen?

Hansen was a huge face, in Japan. In the states, I don't recall any time when he wasn't a heel.

I have a feeling that era was before they started airing GCW in the Northeast. I had never seen that clip, before. Sullivan looks really young.
I do remember Austin Idol. He was a poor man's Superstar Billy Graham. Pretty solid physique in his prime, as did Lewin. That was the Dianabol Era.

Muraco was definitely both - and, that was just in the WWF. He said after retirement that he preferred working heel.
Steve Lombardi is a good one. I think he was a heel even in his jobber days. Allegedly, his push was due to his "relationship" with Pat Patterson.

Wasn't Johnny Weaver always a face?

I think Bundy was always a heel.
I still remember going to the old Montreal Forum to watch Wrestlemania 2 to watch it on the big screen lol.
Thats where Roddy Piper fought Mr T in a boxing match
It really was real to me back then DAMMIT
The cage was an actual real cage and Bundy looked so indestructible

He tried to make a move on Nicole Bass of all people on a flight overseas. That's why she split..according to her...

To me as a kid those cages looked more solid.
Irony is my family used to produce/sell both the products used in steel cage matches the mesh and the chainlink

This was the pre-Satanic, "patriotic" Sullivan.
I was young but remember seeing these in the magazines. Listen to Jim Ross' recent podcast with Sullivan. "Sully" says a few different times that he never once used the term 'Devil" in any of his promos. Always used abudadein.

You may also be interested in the talk he had on Flair's podcast, if you haven't already listened to it.
They both covered some good material.

Thank you Monty....I listen to both Flair and Ross as well as Austin and Jericho. Occasionally Taz has someone of interest on but it is more his analysis of events

I should have figured...
I think YOU are the one who introduced me to podcasts.
I'm now hooked!!

I never new this myself but I just found out recently that during the beginning of their fued, Rick Rude beat the shit out of Warrior backstage during a house show. Something along the lines of Warrior saying Rude was not worthy of working with him for the title. Rude caught wind of this and confronted Warrior which let to a scrap. Both guys gained a good amount of respect for eachother and actually put on good matches.

I also remember a story - I forget who told it - that Rude got fed up with Hellwig's constant carelessness in the ring. So, during one of their matches, Rude grabbed Jim in a headlock, took him down to the mat, and said something to the effect, "If you potato me one more time, I'm gonna shove your head up your ass."

I heard it from an RF shoot interview that Kevin Nash did and it was confirmed by other wrestlers who where in WWE at that time. Apparantly Hogan nick named Rude "The Tazmanian Devil" on account of Rude's real life toughness and Hogan refused to work with him because of it. Hense Rude leaving WWF (then) in late 1990.

Rude and Vader are two of the biggest names Hogan refused to work with.

I'm actually surprised he even fueded with Vader in 1995. It was short lived but i'm surprised it happened.
I know Rude wanted a money run with Hogan back in 1989 after he lost the IC title to Warrior but it never materialized. Christ, they had Rude wrestle Jimmy Snuka at WM6 in a squash which was pointless. A guy with that charisma and talent.

I have heard this as well. He was a legit bad ass. Ironically enough I send out twitter feeds every couple of weeks to Vince,HHH and a bunch of other WWE "superstars" saying it is time to induct Rude into HOF. My guess is Vinny Mac is still upset about Rude being on Nitro and Raw on the same night.
Perhaps the same reason why Luger is not in the HOF. Lex wrestled a Sat or Sunday show for the WWE and was on Nitro that Monday

And it also gives Vince all the rights to their charactors and he basically owns them.
