seriously he's supposed to be some 850 lb. squatting monster so what's going on with the lack of leg mass?

No idea. I was wondering that myself. His squat claim is legit (power meet). His calves are small (he is black), but I don't know about the quads. ???
his quads have some cuts but they're small with no sweep.

He is a heavy juicer(gyno) who is real strong but not big in a certain bodypart.See it all the time.Blah,blah,his back is hurt and he can't squat heavy.Whatever.

At the Arnold Classic I couldnt believe how small his calves were. I mean really small-----------there are guys in my gym and probably many of us here that have better calves than he does. It is probably genetic, wadda ya gonna do ?

Charles Glass, who's training johnnie o said in his column that he has difficulty going all out on legs because of a prior injury. During a past powerlifting meet. Johnnie pulled his achilles. Sometimes when he goes heavy these days on squats and the like, his calf feels like it'll explode again (something that would take him out of contests all together).
Johnnie Otis Jackson is one of the coollest and most hardcore pros - if a serious injury wasnt such a serious reality you know he would be pimpin that iron until it bleeds

Strong Legs dont mean big legs. Just look at Mo Anouti as another example. His is a very strong squatter although im not sure of his actual meet numbers, but dieted down his legs look relatively small compared to the rest of his physique

Exactly. Lots of strong squatters/deadlifters have thin legs.

Also, this shows that strength doesn't always equal size. Which is why I hate when people start throwing poundage numbers. They mean jack shit in bodybuilding. When Jonnie is up on stage nobody asks him how much he squats.
If you care more about how much weight you or someone else lifts focus on powerlifting.

Yes agreed size does not equal strength. There is some sort of correlation but it is not always true.
Mo Anouti has had squat of 850 pounds, 820 pound deadlift but his legs are relatively weak on the pro circuit

no sweep is right. but they are thick as hell fom the side. sweep is all genetics..and a little bit of work on the hacks. my guess is johniie doesnt do to much for legs besides squats and leg press.

His form must change when he does power lifting meets, because you have to be well below parallel

You guys are overlooking JJ's monster package in his posing trunks, which makes his legs look so much smaller. Didn't you ever notice that Branch Warren's MANGINA is the reason his quads look so big.

Great point !! strenght doesn't always equal size , Arnold rarely benched over 400lbs and had one of the biggest & thickest chests of all time , same with Haney , for bodybuilders weight is a means to and end , to many people obsessed with how much people lift , none of that matters , the only thing that matters is who you look onstage .

Also, remember that the way powerlifters squats involves their glutes to a significant degree.

Not as bad as Mike Quinn in the 1980's - Dude had such a good upper body and then tiny 24 inch thighs and no calves!!!
