Title: Hit a deadlift PR of 645 lbs today!
Post by: chris_mason on March 14, 2006, 04:43:55 PM
Seeing Sgt. Rock (Brent Howard) in the Animal Cage at the Arnold got me motivated to hit the sumo deads again.

This was my 3rd session back after a few month layoff.  I use a hook grip when deadlifting (double overhand with the thumb wrapped by the index and forefingers) and I am working on getting my grip back up to snuff.  I pulled 605 lbs on the prior set without straps but decided to add them for the 645 lbs.  I did NOT wear a belt.

Here is a link to a video of the lift (it is a big file so give it a couple of minutes to load).

Thanks guys!

One clarification, I had not been off of training for a few months, I had not deadlifted for a few months.

Deadlift is one of those weird lifts that you can lay off for a few months (assuming you're still lifting, squatting or whatever) and come back and not seem to lose any ground, or even be stronger at it.

But if I don't do flat BB benches for a few weeks....  my bench has suffered when I come back to it.  Why is that?

Anyway 645 without a belt is pretty massive any way you slice it!

I don't have the problem with flat BB & taking time off....I can go just as heavy except I loose the ability for higher reps.

Dude, that was so weak. Your form was horrible. I deadlifted 862 last week in the nude standing on one leg with better form. You really need to go back to basics.

Yes, I am natural.  I know a lot of people claim it but I really am.

Thank you for the compliment.

As for me and the deadlift, it doesn't work that way.  I deadlift and a pretty high level and if I layoff for a period I am certainly weaker at the movement when I initially return to it.

Like butter !! how much do you think you could have squeeked out with a belt on? it appeared to go up without insane effort , great job .

Thanks for the compliment but it was HARD!  Trust me!

I really don't know what a belt and suit would add.  I might be good for over 700 lbs (or not, I really don't have any idea what a suit would add for me) but I have to get the hook grip up to speed for that.  I don't use a mixed grip because of the torque it puts on my spine.

Anyway, my goal is to pull 700+ totally raw with a hook grip.  If I can do that clean I will think I have accomplished something.

Chris, what are your thoughts on deadlifting with a rounded back, as you do in the video? People have screamed bloody murder at me while rounding the back on a deadlift max

Congrats, that's a lotta weight! I love deads but get bored easily and never stick with them long enough to get that kind of weight. There's something to be said for perseverance. Good lift.

I guess the people who are talking to you don't know shit about powerlifting...

Excessive rounding of the upper or lower back can lead to injury but what is excessive is all relative to the individual.  I really don't see that I rounded my back much when I did the lift.  I certainly was not in a position to injure it as I can feel when that is happening (i.e. when I am approaching too much of a rounding or bend).

Lol, that is not cool!   :(

I haven't competed in bodybuilding since I was 19 and I hate shaving so it just is what it is.

To answer the question, NO!

Nothing.

I do one movement at a time and I will cycle them.  I will do sumos for a while and then switch to conventional.  I might then go to Romanian deads and then heels-together deads.   For the last couple of months I did no deads but did very heavy good mornings.

Thanks for the compliment!
