I have deadlifted maybe a dozen times since the mid 80's.  I ruptured my L4 and L5 in 83' or 84'  So I don't do it much.  Well a few years back I had to showoff.  Soe kids were deadlifting and they had 500 on the bar.  They were done and I was just sitting there benching when one of them said "Keith you can do this easy uh"?  I said I don't know but I have done 735 but it was a while ago.  They almost dared me so I had to do it.  S with no warmup, belt wraps straps or anything I went over to the bar.  Well I eneded up doing it.  They couldn't believe it.  Well I said see and I walk away very quickly.  I went into the managers of the gym office and collapse on the floor.  I hurt my back so bad.  I literally had to lie there for awhile till I could get up and walk all crooked to my car.  That taught me never to show off again.  I was layed up for over a week in bed

I as well have fucked up my lower back from younger years of deadlifting.  Dumb.

I'm also working on 6 plates. I pulled 500 for 2 sets of 3 about 3 weeks ago.
Then I pulled something in my lower back (way down by the tail bone) while squatting.

Now, I kind of platued out. I need to switch up routines and make small goals.

I can pull 500 for 3 reps but have been stuck at a 540 single for 6 months now.

one thing that realy helped me move from 4 plates to close to 5 was alternating between sumo and regular deads ... anyone else try that?

go lighter and do more reps, it's still a killer workout.

this is how i break through plateaus if i ever hit one on deads. i'll drop down to around 405-455 and do sets of 8. every time i do this for a few weeks i'll be stronger the next time i go over 550. my personal best is exactly 6 plates for 1 after a few warmup sets. i'm shooting for a 600 RAW dead by the end of this year.

Goudy - Congrats bro, it took me years to hit 495. Keep up the good work.

No Belt?!? 600 would be awesome w/o a belt.

I've never went heavy without a belt, just trained below 405.

Where are you now no belt for 1?

im strengthening my back kid. also a belt adds added pressure to your lower back when training so i think thats the problem. each to their own. good form=no problems

yeh its my grip that fails way before my back strength.
I hate it wen u feel like mr charlie big potatoes and good to heavy and  hurt ur back. I had ligament probs with lower right bak, sometimes a day or so after heavy deads i get bad back spasms.

Sorry, yes i use a belt. by RAW i mean no suit or straps. i only use my belt for max attemps. i've never had any back problems caused by deadlifting.

a deadlift with good form does not hurt your back.but be sure to include lots of good mornings in your program.
