In a late evening of November, 1937, a research mathematician at the Bell Labs, George Stibitz, left his working place to go home, taking from the Bell stockroom two telephone relays, a couple of flashlight bulbs and, a wire and a dry cell. At home he sat behind the kitchen table and started to assemble a simple logical device, which consisted from the above-mentioned parts and a switch, made from a tobacco tin. He soon had a device, which proved to be the first relays binary adder, in which a lighted bulb represented the binary digit "1" and an unlighted bulb, the binary digit "0." His wife Dorothea named it the K-model, after "kitchen table".

The transistor was successfully demonstrated on December 23, 1947 at Bell Laboratories. The three individuals credited with the invention of the transistor were William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain.
Bell Labs is also responsible for Unix, C, and C++. Linux, the most popular operating system in the world is a copy of Unix.

Thomas Savery, in 1698, patented the first practical, atmospheric pressure, steam engine of 1 horsepower (750 W).
Here's a scale model of how it works.
When you heat an enclosed area and let it cool a vacuum is created which can sucks water.
This simple invention changed the world in a big way.

Pretty amazing to think at the time when computers and chips didn't exist that people could just think of it and then develop a language to allow it to operate.

In 1712, Thomas Newcomen modified Thomas Savery design to add a beam lever. It still uses condensed steam to create a vacuum, but this time the vacuum pulls a chain attached to plunger. The Industrial Revolution is on it's way.
-
In 1763 James Watt was assigned the job of repairing a model Newcomen engine and noted how inefficient it was.
In 1765 Watt conceived the idea of equipping the engine with a separate condensation chamber, which he called a "condenser". Because the condenser and the working cylinder were separate, condensation occurred without significant loss of heat from the cylinder.
It's impressive that our fore fathers could make such an impressive piece of machinery in 1776.

In 1784. French engineer Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot demonstrated the utility of a steam powered vehicle by building a steam trike, which was designed to carry 4–5 tonnes.
-
All that was needed was a more effective design, which William Murdoch's gave it in 1784.

Richard Trevithick realised that improvements in boiler technology now permitted the safe production of high-pressure steam. He built a full-size steam road locomotive in 1801 called Puffing Devil.
