Yes, I havent liked them since "And Justice for All", but this sounds more like the old Metallica...
First few right up until "Master" were amazing...
-
Bunch of old irrelevant assholes, brought down Napster and general assholes when it comes to streaming their music. Dinosaurs who still believe people buy CD's.
They're too old to even realise streaming sites would be the only thing keeping their old irrelevant selves afloat in media. Their old albums are still among the best in rock history. 8)
Hate 'em and love 'em

All there music is on Spotify ???
The Napster thing was retarded though. People hated Lars already but that just solidified how much of a dumbass he is.

Took years for them to get to spotify though as they fought every inch of having their music on streaming sites.

they band is in debt there shitty music festival and shitty movie put them into heavy debt

it's a great song and thats all that matters

I feel sorry for that moth... :(

Agree - although I like a few songs on the Black Album
Listen to All Nightmare Long on Death Magnetic. That's when they figured it out again - think they went back to Rick Rubin. Song is epic.
New single is promising.
-
sounds quite a bit like megadeth
-

Were you born with the umbilical cord around your neck?
-
I like all their stuff. The shorter songs on LOAD are great and all the rest. One of the best bands ever who always had great stuff like Green Day.
-
Typical metal/rock band. Were awesome when they were on all sorts of drugs, they sober up and their music turns to shit. So either they're all on heroin now or they hired a drugged up song writer to help them out.

Or they are just old and washed up like the rest of the old hags trying to relive their glory days. Some people just don't know when to quit.

I'd pay $135 for a front row seat to hear it.
-
I wonder when they finally get a drummer.
-
I used to be a big Metallica fan a long time ago. Their song writing simply isn't as good as it used to be. Most people hear a tone and think...it's the old Metallica. No, the old Metallica wrote better songs.
It's more than most can comprehend though. After the black album...the writing went downhill. Particularly when Newsted left the band.
Many think the black album wasn't great due to it being mainstream,etc...it was actually one of their better albums. Master probably the best.
-
my fart is more interesting than this
I don't know about your rippin'...but this stuff isn't revolutionary indeed...

Interesting comparison, their old tone definitely sounds better:

That was cool. Like all versions before the Black Album.

First thing after the Black Album that have made me exited. Quite amazing really.

The 80's Metallica was the best. They were hungry for it. It has been a sinking ship for awhile.

it's like death magnetic.
you hit the nail on the head.. sound like a bonus track from death magnetic.
-
Metallica is not back they are dead as a matter of fact rock is dead its now a underground music that you use with chalk on my hands lifting up the deadlift bar screaming lightweight muthafuckaaaaaaaa.
-
The first four are amongst the greatest heavy metal albums ever recorded. The self-titled is still heavy as hell, but moderated and paced in such a way that the masses could grasp its songcraft. It propelled the band into stardom and success never before seen with a metal act. Especially one from the more extreme end of the style (here, thrash).
Since then, Metallica has sucked and become irrelevant to the contemporary metal scene.
This attempt to recapture that "thing" is too little too late. It's been a quarter of a century.
The riffs are rote, Lars hasn't kept pace with drmming advancements (or even himself) and Kirk is the most underwhelming soloist of his peers from the original Cali thrash community. His bag of tricks is old. In short, he stinks.
Metal has moved on. And of the oldschool, most have never failed their audience in the way that Metallica has.
They squandered their career timeline with decades of bullshit and inferior material.
Too little. And too late.

I approve of most of this, but still think All Nightmare Long on Death Magnetic is epic, and will give this album a fair shot.

How many years to Prince fight to keep his material off Youtube and any other assorted outlet only to die a few years later...Like MJ he's now worth more dead to his estate...

In the end I like most music and could give 2 fucks when people nitpick the shit out of it.
don't like, dont listen to it.
kinda like bieber, I am not a fan, but I am not going to deny some fan of his the happiness his music brings to them for whatever reason by whining and and trying to pinpoint the exact moment an artist decided that his hardcore fans alone were not going to provide them with enough income to live outside of bedbug infested motels and rooming house existences just to stay pure for a bunch of faggy music snobs who were never good enough themselves to play, produce, or sing for shit
that's all I am saying
-
Solid effort for the mid 80s but metal has moved on from this sound and if I'm honest as a die hard metal fan this is not innovative in the least bit and doesn't do much for me. In addition, his voice.. I cannot stand Hetfield's voice at any point past justice. It's just too pop.
I've done a lot of listening this year to metal in particular. I've heard it all genrewise in my time as a metal fan. I'm loving Adept's new album Sleepless, and the new Architects record as well.

Been a Metallica fan since 1988 (when I was 10). Since James went sober in 2001 he completely lost his set of balls. He has 0 REAL aggression left in him. He tries to "sing" and ends up sounding like he's auditioning for Americas Got Talent. While both Kirk and Lars lost their playing skills around 15 years ago, James imo has been the weak link of the band. He's way too happy and rich to sing the songs the way they were meant to be sung, with venom and real anger. They are a polished hard rock billion dollar corporation who have 0 musical integrity in their veins and completely sold out for the almighty dollar. The sheep will buy whatever they sell and they know it, hence why it takes them 8-9 years to release an album. They have been on autopilot since 2001 (when Jason left the sinking ship). Metallica died in 1993/1994 and were passable until 2000. It's just FAKE and FORCED music today and real METAL fans know that. It's mainstream watered down safe by the numbers generic pop/country/hard rock masqueraded for metal. They should have been stripped of the METAL in METALlica as soon as Load was released in 1996 (20 fucking years ago). Some even think when The Black Album was released 25 years ago. They DID sell out even way back then, but at least they were still a badass live band on that tour and they all still gave it 110% back then. Fuck that and fuck them and this is from a former die hard fan who has seen them live a dozen times.
-
you hit the nail on the head.. sound like a bonus track from death magnetic.
Yup, it sounds like it's a leftover from Death Magnetic (Beyond Magnetic EP). It's forced metal/aggression, but the masses will eat it up as they do with everything else Metallica tries to push.
-
Bought RTL as a new release. Was as big a Metallica fan in the '80s as they came. The self-titled, while a heavy heavy metal album, failed to my ears. Great "songs" and great production, but it and me didn't connect. I bought Load, listened through once, and I broke it in half and chucked it into the garbage can.
I agree with the poster a couple up. James now has zero metal fire in his being.
The fellas are playing a role. It's no longer real. It is forced. The new music is metal by guys who lost their metal hearts a long time ago.
My CD collection is nearing five thousand. I buy between five and 15 discs each week. Essentially all hard rock and metal.
For me, Metallica has been over for 25 years. This new record is, as I say, too little too late. And to make matters worse, its oldschool thrash peers are recording some of their finest work these past few years.
Over four albums they were untouchable.
Then it was over.
-
Take 2/3rds of Load, and 1/3rd of ReLoad... combine... and you would have had a great follow up to the Black album.
St. Anger has 3 three great songs that I still have on my lift mix, and Death Magnetic was hit and miss

assholes because they didnt want people to "steal" their hard work?
-
Metallica sold out to the mainstream when they made their black album. I can't blame them for it since it gathered more fans and made the band more money than what they would have if they stayed with their trash metal sound... "Master of Puppets" was the last original Metallica CD/album

This. James' voice is gone. Went six feet under when he went to rehab.
They are going to have to compose around it. Plus, they bounce around from producer to producer. It's a shame.
Ironically, Dream Theater keeps banging out INSANELY GOOD and catchy metal riffs album after album. Granted, they fuck it up with their excessive prog rock obsessions, but the point is, if you got it, you got it.
Sadly, it pains me deeply to say it, but Metallica has lost it. :( I suspect they are buying their material.
-
Guitar tone needs to be a lot meaner, bring back the mesa mk2c+'s they used on master of puppets. There needs to be a wall of sound! I had a second listen and it's 'ok' I guess, a lot better than their other recent stuff but still could be a lot better. James' voice needs to be meaner too
-
Metallica died for me when Cliff died
I did buy Ajfa but it was a bassless, cliffless record
My sister took me to meet them in 83 at the stone. I was 8 years old n came in wearing an allister fein shout at the devil shirt
They couldnt believe how young i was. They hated the crue.
James burst a vocal cord during the ajfa tour. His voice was never the same after that
-
- metal hasnt moved on
- selling out is a myth
- nobody cared about cliff burton then, only after he died, another myth
- new song is great, vocals, guitar etc on every level
in short youre wrong on everything.

You're either a delusional fanboy or woefully out of touch with the contemporary metal scene.
If you like the new songs, great. But don't speak nonsense.
(Lars and Kirk are extremely subpar to today's standards.)
-
I like it. You can't please everyone. People always say that "old Metallica is best Metallica".
If Metallica never changed their tone or style then people would rag on them because "all their records sound the same".
When making music it's better to play what makes you happy because people will find fault with whatever you do.
The world is short on creators and long on critics.

dont know what youre talking about
there is no reason to listen to any bands coming after the 90s

My first Metallica concert was Master of Puppets. Loved the mid 80's heavy metal concerts. Thrash pits, push and shove your way into the pit nd front stage. James poured his beer over my friend and myselfs head at the Justice tour in Seattle. I as well as my then girlfriend can be seen in the box set Live Shit and Purge videos at the September Seattle show. They where always good live.
-
Rockband usually have better successrate with their combacks than bodybuilders! :)
-
Sounds like half of their other songs, totally unoriginal, hang it up and retire already you moneygrabbing fucks.
I'd rather underappreciated bands like this one;

Holy shit!
4 questions...
1-how in the bloody hell do you find the time to listen to all this music?
2-how many vinyls and/or cassettes had you collected prior to this?
3-How many of these cd's have you listened to many times and/or just once?
4-Do you just go to record stores to buy these, or websites ie band sites/amazon etc?
Thats alot of cd's weekly and overall, very impressive. No party would be boring at your house music wise

thats ok, not everybody can be an expert in everything from lifting to metal music like you and spending half their day telling everyone how much they know and how little everyone else know and how wrong everyone else is.
you must be a real joy to be around ::)

hardline sounds like some left over from the 80s. guess its ok if thats your thing but i didnt expect it to be from 2012.
im not surprised youtube suggested warrant and cinderella after i clicked on it...

You should've went with option c) board retread

i rather have 300 posts than 5000 cds
i dont think there's any need for more than 5 metal cds
put them on repeat and you'll be just fine. any more than that is just excessive.

metal magic is the underappreciated debut album from one of metals greatest - pantera.
i especially like the first track on the album 'ride my rocket':
ride my rocket
wear me out
ride my rocket
make me twist and shout
ride my rocket
give me all of your love
ride my rocket
I just can't get enough.
if thats not poetry i dont know what is.

I have one whole room in my condo devoted to my collection.
I listen to CDs constantly. Prior to CDs, I bought vinyl. Only purchased cassettes for a couple of years before going full-on compact discs. Most of my discs I have spun at least five times. Hundreds of them, many, many times more. Most of my albums I purchase from Amazon private sellers and from HMV stores.
Hard rock and metal (and iron) are my lifeblood.
Been a metalhead since 1982. NEVER wavered. Never.
-
i think variety is the spice of life
if you only listen to one genre of music youre missing out.
thats kind like just eating mexican food and nothing else all your life. or just watching romcoms. (and having a whole room full of romcoms on dvd and vhs and laserdisc and blu ray)

You sound like a man who enjoys the more-than-occasional cock.
P.S. I dig jazz/fusion (Metheny, UZEB, Montgomery) and VERY select non-metal artists. For instance, Toto, Journey, Tears For Fears, The Police, Eric Johnson, etc.
-
so do we agree that 5 metal albums is all that is needed and any more than that is just a waste of money.
which 5 albums you reckon is the only ones that is needed?

Ridiculous.
Hell, I own hundreds of records I'd consider mandatory for a passionate listener.

If James Hetfield never changed his singing style (thanks, Bob Rock), then I could tolerate the music post-Justice album.

Dear fuck ... Let me think for a bit.
(Of course, anything I come up with will be spur-of-the-moment, and thus, not accurate. I'd have to spend days whittling a list to arrive at anything resembling my true list.)

lol, "Dad Rock" describes this shit perfectly
-
metallica playing it live:
the comments get it right:
"I still wonder how the fuck James can play this riff and sing together"
"Their new material is stellar, and their performance matched. Hetfield's voice sounds the best it has since the early 90's too. "
"Holy shit. This is the best Metallica has looked in so freakin long. Everybody seems into it. Into being the music. Man this is so good."
"I don't know when or why they decided to turn up the bass so you can actually hear it, but I must say I overwhelmingly approve. They haven't had this much bass live since Cliff died. They finally sound like they should have for the last 25 years or so"
"They sound like themselves again"
"sound very close to their early 90s albums, pretty damn good."
"Nice to hear Rob, finally! Nice bass line and nice backing vocals."
-
Really good song. My favorite thing is to watch amateur musicians (guitarists) play covers of this tune on YouTube. Great stuff! Glad to hear Metallica is back in fighting shape!!!
-
Personally think Testament does a better job at being what Metallica was these days then Metallica does.
-
One of the most overblown bands in the history of metal.
-
Any tour dates yet?
-
One of the most overblown bands in the history of metal.
I always thought the same thing.
Granted, they had a couple very good albums. Ride the Lightning and ...And Justice for All being my personal favorites.
However, back around the year 2000 they were described as my generation's Led Zeppelin. That certainly went way too far in describing them.
-
metallica is far better than led zeppelin
-
Their first 4 albums where some of metal history's greatest and most epic ever. Number 5 The Black Album was not so much thrash but still super heavy and in my ears still amazing. After that it went downhill fast unfortunately. Is it a coincidence that James and the band sobering up marked this downfall? They did their best work in the period they were also known as "Alcoholica" so just like BB's artists do there best work influenced by drugs.
After The Black Album James said in the documentary about aforementiond album that AJFA was a wall of sound/guitars and it felt good at the time but they realised they needed some guidance this time around for their next album because they wanted to move on. So it was a decision made by the band, they just wanted to make different sounding music.
If they are looking to get back to their roots now and make thrash metal again why can they not get their sound back? Is it because they are sober now and 25 years older? Their new thrash music doesn't have the flow and beautiful transitions and melody of their old work.
-
No longer hungry. Money coming in from all angles.
-
Yes, I havent liked them since "And Justice for All", but this sounds more like the old Metallica...
First few right up until "Master" were amazing...
What's interesting is this first single sounds more like Justice/Black LOL.
-
For all the Metallica haters, the band says "meh."

back on form
anyone who hates metallica
has poor taste

i prefered the first two singles, need to listen to it a little bit more but people seem to like it
full album coming out in a few weeks

Back in the day, I used to love seeing both Guns N Roses & Metallica in concert. I remember the feuds these bands would have, as well as a few others.
I am glad to see both bands back in the fold.
This is one of my favorite Metallica songs:
Wishing them success!
"1"

The new song is good 8)

Pretty Megadeth-ish with a bit of too much "nu-metal" for me.
-"- good overall and way better than their st. anus flatulatorium.
p.s.: if it were an unknown band no one would care.
-
-
they still suck
