What do you think is the saddest death of a bodybuilder or a former bodybuilder. I would have to say Paul DeMayo, because he was so young, and Don Youngblood, because he started late in life and you have to wonder...

wait, sorry I thought you meant messageboards

Personally for me it was Dave Johns. He helped my out alot when I was a teenager. Also Joe Valdez, he used to take all of my photographs since I was 18.....

How did Youngblood and Demayo die? ???

How did Youngblood and Demayo die? ???
I think both die of heart failure..
-
What's sad is the long process leading up to their death. Generally long-term downward spirals with endings that by then aren't a surprise.
Mentzer was the saddest story, because he seemed smart enough to know better than to let the long-term deterioration take place and become very obvious.
-
Demayo did suicide,
Mentzer and Youngblood,
you don't have to be a mathematician to figure out what killed them. Remember flex wheeler? The man has like a cat multiple lives, he should be dead to.
Respect to the dead, but no as example.
Do you notice that almost all Olympias are still alive? They were gifted, these persons pushed the boundry's to much.
-
What did Mentzer die of?
-
DeMayo was a smackhead when he died and for that he gets no sympathy from me. Theyre among the scum of the earth, it doesnt matter who the fuck you are/were
-
What did Mentzer die of?
Mentzer had a heart attack while working on his computer. Basically he died working on his latest projects which John Little fortunately finished. He had previously been dianogsed with some blood clot disorder and was on some potent blood thinners when he tried to be a donor for his brother. Basically the same thing Cory Everson had. Nothing to do with steroids because his father died of the same thing right around his age. When he died, his brother pretty much had no reason to hang on I suppose.
Don Youngblood on the other had was on a very heavy off-season stack and basically died of a heart attack while taking a nap while his family was away at some picnic.
They were all great bodybuilder and they will be missed.

This one?
Serious health issues

Used to see De mayo around Malden sometimes.....
Even when wasted on herion you could still see the silhouette of them legs

I used to see him across the street from Ciao Bella on Newbury Street. He'd just be standing there in front of that little market people watching.

I live in Copley
Ya it was always weird to see him.. I grew up in Malden and would see him occasionally when visiting people

I'd have to say Ray Mentzer. He was my friend and training partner. Don Ross too. We had some good times.

He died in his hotel room.

To be completely fair, Don had developed a sleep apnea which didn't have anything to do with bodybuilding. hifrommike can tell you more about this.
Although Don DID have diabetes and had also had an angioplasty performed and still had plans to complete again, so it didn't seem as though he was the most health conscious person in the world. ???
Also, he was a trucker for many years, and with that comes high stress and bad food generally.
No, you're wrong....he was "on a very heavy off-season stack"
-
Jon Riggins?
Seriously, they are all sad. But not learning from their deaths is even sadder. Youngblood was my favorite so his absence saddens me the most. :'(
-
Have to wonder what?
Paul DeMayo was a sad case. Don was an amazing person beyond the bodybuilder, and also relatively young.
I wonder if he was so unhealthy before he began bodybuilding that he would have died anyway, or if something he used or did hurried his death.

Probably drugs of recreational nature.

Don had tons of heart disease deaths in his family... He was also obese prior to taking up bodybuilding in his early fourties. From AK too... not the best place to find heart healthy cooking. Pile those goodies together with all the bells and whistles of bodybuilding.... recipe for problems.

Looks like he would have died anyway. I guess that should be good news, but it doesn't feel like good news to me.
-

Kidneys and liver quit on him completely. The saddest thing was he actually did a porn movie with an insulin pump on shortly before he dropped dead in a train station.
-

They're dying from the dreaded diease "semen swallowitis en excessiveness" it strikes only a select few who want it all at once. It is sad but true. How can we beat this awful infliction. Please if you encountered anyone with this diease be careful. It's not worth the end result. Think Before you Cum
That was tacky but funny as hell. I have laughed over it so many times. ha ha ha ;D

Its very sad with all of them

Don Youngblood. I was really shocked when I heard he had died. He was kind of becoming a poster boy for age not being a factor when it comes to BB. It's the one thing about being a BB fan that I can never get comfortable with. The freakier they are, the more I love them. But if "loving the freaks" is pushing people into territory where they are shearing years off their natural lifespans, we all have to take a step back. I have been watching more of the natural BB competitions to build some perspective, but its so hard to know what is natural anymore.
I hate the idea the fans are driving bad choices, even though its the athletes themselves that are taking the step to juice and push themselves too hard, and the competitions and judging (and mags) are allowing it to happen. Messy business. At least the mags can write honestly about what they put themselves through and offer the most up to date advice on how they can protect themselves if they must BB on the edge. :(
sigh.

It is definitely a dilemna. We know that what they are doing is not healthy, but we like the way it looks and we now expect it. Like you said, it is hard to go from looking at pros to going to natural contests. It would be like watching 1950's basketball games. I don't know what to do. Can the genie be put back in the bottle?

I always thought Andreas Munzers death would be a grim way to go. I think when it happened FLEX published a report/article from a German newspaper. Said on a flight from the U.S. to Germany started feeling ill and basically bled out on a gurney in the hospital! Everyone when on to blame his abuse of Cytadren for the death cuz at the time his blood wouldnt clot but who knows.. :(

Hey Only stay outa the rain!!!!!! I just saw msnbc's report on whats going on down there. is it youre island?
No I am in Kona. The dryest place in Hawaii. It has hardly rained here. The other side (Hilo) but Kauai and Oahu have been fucked up. My ex's mom and a multi-million dollar home in Manoa and it has been almost all washed down the hill. Kauai got hit really bad with dams breaking and stuff.

I used to work out at Gold's Gym in Fort Smith AR when I lived there. I would see Don Youngblood in there all the time about a year or two before he died. I'd never seen a pro in real life before then and was awestruck at his size. He looked like he was wearing football pads! He was a really nice guy too and didn't strut around the gym like he owned the place, even though there were pics of him all over. Then I moved to El Paso and about a year or so later I'm reading the Fort Smith newspaper and his obituary is in there. I was pretty shocked. I'm glad I got to meet him before he died. He looked amazing considering his age and how late he got into the sport.

Momo, was the biggest loss to bodybuilding!
-
Do we really think it is “sad” if we continue to patronize, encourage, reward, and support them for going to such extremes? True, they are making a free choice, but would so many of them continue to make that choice if there was no audience for it?
Our words say one thing, but our deeds say “there are plenty more where that dead bodybuilder came from.” :-\
-

I agree
Momo went out of this world dying at any cost.
In some aspects....I can respect that.
It's a damn shame.....but he literally lived by the phrase "at any cost"

I think we are very much ambivalent about the matter. I think that Pandora's Box has been opened and we cannot go back to appreciating lesser physiques. Do we really care about these guys? Maybe we don't.

My boy Hans.

The deaths that hit me hardest was the back to back passing of Mike and Ray Mentzer.
But it really is a sad occasion to see anyone you know or talk about often pass away.
Especially if they pass away while still very young.

Ok, tough guy...I suppose it is not sad when a race car driver dies, either, because they participate in a dangerous sport ::) Ask all of the Dale Earnhardt fans what their opinion is, tough guy ::)

of course its not
nor is it sad when a base jumper dies
or a fire swallower
or a snake handler (your mom dont count)
or anyone else who does something so careless with their health (hero's aside)
better ... um "not tough guy" ::)

I dont think that is a good analogy. Race car drivers do everything possible to be safe. Those cars can hit a wall at 200mph and walk away allot of time. Racing is a very dangerous sport. BB is not a sport #1 and it is not dangerous. It is the dumbass's that abuse the drugs that make it dangerous. It in all reality someone who dies of steroid abuse is just asking for it. It is their decision to inject themselves and thus all negative repercusions should be expected. It is too bad that the same guys who abuse the roids and die do not think of the people they leave behind.

Aren't you a badass ::) Being foolish with your health and taking risks are not the same thing. Some people do things because they are passionate about them and I am glad those people exist. It is sad when one of them passes and leaves a family behind, even if internet tough guys such as yourself don't care ::)
-

lol .... you're an idiot
and a guy
and an anonymous little homo :)

With exceptions of course for those you personally cared about. :-\
er.... the first time she had it you would have a point ... the second time she got it she was clean as a whistle ;)

Wrong, race car drivers do not do everything possible to be safe. If they did, they wouldn't race cars at 200 mph::) Yes, professional bodybuilding is inherently dangerous, because long-term studies about the substances used have not been conducted and many have negative side effects. Some bodybuilders do their best to be safe while being successful in their sport and they die anyway. I guess you are another tough guy ::)

FOx you have to be one the dumbest idiots on here. Son, you need to get your head on straight. You have proven time and time again you are just an little internet kid acting like he knows something. But you come off stupid in every post. Good job, son.

What about what I said was idiotic? You have still not explained why it is not sad when someone is too passionate. I will grant you that what is sad is an opinion. We just have different opinions, but we are both right. Wow, insulting me, aren't you tough ::) ? I'll bet you have a motorcycle and a leather "bomber" jacket ::) I'll bet you have a "switchblade", too :o
-
What about what I said was idiotic?
1) calling people "tough guys" for disagreeing with u
2) saying being foolish with your health is different from taking a risk
3) implying that its not ok to feel no pity for a person who died foolishly if its in the persuit of something they are passionate about
4) blindly kissing the "big shots" ass
5) talking shit to people when you are an anonymous little homo
only me ... did i miss anything?

A speculative risk implies that the outcome is unknown, but something positve could occur, or something negative. I would say that just being foolish with your health would mean that there was no real upside to your actions that was worth the risk. If it is your opinion that something is not sad, then state that it is your opinion, don't act like it's a fact ::) I'm not blindly kissing anything.
Calling someone a "homo" is junior high school :P Are you in the 7th grade or the 8th, tough guy? :D
-
I find it sad no matter what. :'(
But one could argue that a person's previous "reckless" behaviour with their health could play a role in a future death.
Which brings into play the exception rule.
you could argue that ... but it seems like you're reaching to me
-

I guess it all comes down to opinion. Not all of us are as tough as you :)

if their "speculative risk" took into account the possibility of death what you're saying implies that its a non foolish decision to risk death for a better body ..... good call ::)
if their "speculative risk" failed to take this into account, then they are stupid cause it was obviously a possibility
either way they are foolish and you're dead wrong bitch ;D

I don't think it is a worthwhile decision, but they might. Many people work in somewhat dangerous fields and they accept that the upside is money/fame and the downside is injury or death. So no, I am not wrong. Talking about being able to beat me up is so junior high school , and since I will not threaten a child, I'll instead extend an olive branch. Saying that agreement means being on someone's nuts is a very unsophisticated analysis. Back to the drawing board for you.

none are as sad as the millions of young men killed in world war 1, 2, or most wars for that matter.
As Kirk Douglas said in his famous speech from Paths of Glory "Sometimes Im ashamed to be apart of the human race, and this is one of them"
(not right now just wasted lives in general, be it from musclerexia or alcoholism, or losing in a russian roulette game in Saigon)

No doubt. It was unbelievably tragic to have them BOTH die that way. Mike Mentzer was a great source of inspiration and information when I was a teen and had just started working out. I always admired him.

Following the loss at the 1980 Mr. Olympia, Mentzer reportedly ran into numerous problems. In the late 1970's Mike is was reported to have begun using amphetamines, claiming he only took them as an ergogenic aid to help facilitate a hectic lifestyle. Mentzer left his position at Weider Publications shortly after his loss at the Mr. Olympia contest, and suffered financially as a result. He did land a job in 1985 as editor of the newly launched Workout Magazine, however when that failed and that same year his father died, Mentzer reportedly suffered a mental breakdown. According to Peter McGough, editor-in-chief of FLEX Magazine, stories began to surface of Menzter exhibiting some very erratic behaviour. Stories of him running naked through the streets, directing traffic, telling prophecies about the end of the world, being arrested by the police numerous times and even waiting for aliens to land were all published in magazines at one point or another. Popular bodybuilding writer Dan Duchaine even suggested that Menzter was drinking his own urine at the time. Mike denied this in a 2001 interview with Iron Man magazine. Nonetheless, according to McGough some of these stories are true.[1] Menzter was also regularly institutionalized between 1985 up until 1990, when he finally kicked his amphetamine habit. Drug free, Mike returned to training bodybuilders and writing for Ironman Magazine, and spent much of the 90's regaining his stature in the bodybuilding industry.
Mentzer passed away on June 9 2001. He was found dead in his apartment by his younger brother and fellow bodybuilder Ray Mentzer due to heart complications. Mentzer was reportedly a heavy user of methamphetamine for about a decade, and this was thought of as a contributing factor in his death. Tragically just two days later, his brother Ray also passed away in his sleep after complications from his long term battle with Berger's disease.

According to what I read, Youngblood died for several reasons. He had a serious injury while trying to lift too much for a photo shoot for FLEX shortly after he had won the Masters O in 2002 (he competed at the Olympia while injured, & wasn't nearly in the shape he was at the Masters O). He never completely recovered from that injury, & it started a downward spiral he never pulled out of. By 2005 he was diabetic & also suffered from sleep apnea enough to need a mechanical device to breathe while he was sleeping. He was close to 300 pounds. In a training video he did with Chad Ray Martin (whom he had mentored), he was almost unrecognizable. He was alone at home & sleeping when his heart failed. It is likely that all of the above factors contributed to his early death. Apnea causes you to stop breathing, & that alone can do it. All the allegations that his death was steroid-related had no credibility, IMHO.
-
Riggins died from a Nubain addiction. It had nothing to do with his bodybuilding.

Munzer's death was one of the saddest. I remember MMI said that he was a kind and gentle person who never truly got his due in contest placings. He barely spoke English and still managed to compete Stateside for a decade or so. It sucks when a man works his ass off and dies before his time . . .
Rest in Peace, Andreas Munzer

Any death is sad,not for the dead person, but for the ones they leave behind.

They were crying because they were going to miss him. I will say that I think bodybuilding deaths are especially sad because they are often premature.

Youngblood's death was particularly sad IMO... self-made multimillionaire, husband, father, grandfather, all around nice guy...
I can't understand why such an intelligent, mature man with so much going for him got so caught up in a game in which the risks are so great and the rewards so small.

They were crying because they were going to miss him. I will say that I think bodybuilding deaths are especially sad because they are often premature.
if they r gonna miss him KNOWING that he's going to a better place then would they like him back?
isn't that selfish?
