friend is doing a bench competition in 2 days. He want to lose 5lbs+ while keeping his strength, to bench twice his bodyweight.
I'm thinking to cut weight:
cut his carbs in half (from 350 - 150 or so?)
low sodium
no whey protein (makes you retain water as far as i know)
and lower water intake the day he weighs in?
after weigh-in to increase strength - 2-3 scoops of dextrose w/ creatine, other carbs, whey protein.
Any other ideas/suggestions?

lots of dandelion root, vitamin c, cut out water 24 hours before the contest, i think potassium might help as well. check out the forums at powermagonline.com they probably have a lot of advice for this kind of thing.

nothing to do with diet, but the last powerlifting meet i went to, the guys would snort smelling salt (or something similar) right before lifting to increase teh senses.

ammonia. helps you get a much bigger breath and increases alertness, which can result in a better lift. you also have to remember that powerlifters are out of their minds, such as kennelly's girl slapping the shit out of him enough to draw blood before he lifts.

dude should of done something about this with more than 2 days notice ::)

true but he anyone can lose water weight in a few days, the trouble is keeping your strength.

its two days, dingus. i've known 165 lifters that can drop 5-10 pounds in time for the weigh-in then bloat back up to the high 170s for the lift itself. wrestlers routinely shed a few pounds before the weight-in, i lost 5 pounds in an hour in high school for one meet.
the weigh-in isn't right before the lifts usually, the last meet i saw a flyer for at the gym had the weigh-in the morning before. plenty of time to pig out and get the muscles back filled up.

Well I am losing weight really good now and getting stronger.

did you win?

3hrs between weigh-in and competition. Can gain a few pounds back I guess.

did you win?
actually i didn't even get to wrestle. i ran down to 155 and then the coach decided to bump everyone up a weight class that was below me so the state champ could wrestle their 155 guy instead of me. i just sat on the bench and sulked. also ate a fucking bag of starburst to avoid passing out.

being dehydrated before you max out is probably one of the best ways to tear a muscle.
worth it?

did you wear the trash bags/sweat suit and run, or just spit for an hour straight? i had to do that in high school and hated it. You usually win though, cause you're so pissed you couldn't eat/drink for 2 days that you take it out on the poor kid you're wrestling.

Tell him to jog up a mountain or a small hill.
