any of you guys do these regularly? I game them a shot after some heavy barbell shrugs just to see what the dealo is. It didn't work too bad.

Never heard of this. I think shrugs are best but does it feel like it really hits them?
-
I use it as an excellent burnout movement, great for height..

well I did them after my heavy barbell shrugs. I did them nice and slow and held them at the top for a good 2 second count and i have to tell ya they were incredably sore the next day! my calf maching goes to 400lbs and you can place 45s on it to make it heavier but i stuck with about 250 for the shrugs and it worked nicley....they look retarded but im definatly doing them again.

I might have to try it!!

Give them two months in your training routine and you will be impressed...

Doing shrugs on a standing calf machine has been around for many, many years. It takes the weaker link of the grip (if not using straps) and position of the bar out of the exercise. On occasion your might try doing one side (alternate) at a time to insure strength and muscle balance in the trap area. With the weight resting on the shoulder/traps this exercise becomes more of a Hise Shrug. A great amount of weight can be piled on this movement for good results. No need to do any other shrugging exercise in a workout in this one is done correctly. Good Luck.
PS: Of course if the pads dig into the shoulders than drape a heavy towel(s), baby blanket, etc over the shoulder/trap area. With enought muscle mass on the traps/shoulders there shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I loved it when I was at my old gym. This gym I'm in now is pretty much all free weights and racks with couple of leg machines thrown in a warehouse. Cycle it for a while.

jpm hit the nail on the head. standing calf raise shrugs are a variation of the hise shrug.
another shrug variation can be done on an angled t bar row. it is called a scapula shrug and is very useful in creating an angular variable to the "shrug" movement for traps

good exercise, although i think it would be bad for the spine
