Facebook Has Open-Sourced Artificial Intelligence Framework: PyTorch 1.0. Something tells me this will be like Linux for AI.
Since Facebook open-sourced PyTorch, the project has gained many supporters. With deeper cloud service support from Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure, and tighter integration with technology providers ARM, Intel, IBM, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm.

The Singularity:
The hypothesis that the invention of artificial superintelligence (ASI) will abruptly trigger runaway technological growth, resulting in unfathomable changes to human civilization.
-
Where’s Zillotch with his opinion on this?

The science fiction writer Arthur Clarke famously wrote, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Yet, humanity may be on the verge of something much greater, a technology so revolutionary that it would be indistinguishable not merely from magic, but from an omnipresent force, a deity here on Earth. It’s known as artificial super-intelligence, and, although it may be hard to imagine, many experts believe it could become a reality within our lifetimes.
so AI can only be as smart as the person who programs the computer but one believes that AI could learn to raise its own intelligence without our help and take over

What exactly would a super computer do? Build an army of machines that would enslave or kill humans?

Then the question is what pill do you want neo

Linus Tovald 1991:
Hello everybody out there using minix -
I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and
professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing
since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on
things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat
(same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons)
among other things).
I've currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work.
This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, and
I'd like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions
are welcome, but I won't promise I'll implement them :-)
Linus (torv...@kruuna.helsinki.fi)
PS. Yes - it's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs.
It is NOT protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never
will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(.

One AI Expert predicts the median probability of the singularity occurring at 2040. He says the hardware will be powerful enough in 2030, but the algorithms will take another ten years of development.

[...]one believes that AI could learn to raise its own intelligence without our help[...]
Look, as an amateur programmer (VBA, C++, et cetera,) I can give you my two cents: there will be a point in time in the not so near future in which AI will be GIVEN enough resources to kind of develop its own intelligence capacity. When we reach that point, whoever programs whatever machine will also include statements to moderate the thing's behavior. Kinda us humans: we're ingrained with the innate capacity for survival, meaning we all do whatever it takes to stay alive (aside from the suicidal types, which come without the capacity). But this capacity is something ALL animals have develop, not because we are intelligent, but because it's a necessity for the survival of the species.
Life itself can easily be programmed in if-then-else, while-do or for loops, but let's not get carried away here.
Whatever is given the capacity to develop intelligence will also be controlled and will most likely only be apt for simple tasks, not complex activities like humans do. This will be the case for many, many years. Good example: vending machines, simple task yet they break down all the fucking time.

How does this not scare anybody?

The "Stealth Flying Wing" eccentric shape, which were mandated by the necessity of preventing radio frequency reflections, resulted in eccentric handling characteristics. Which was the reason the late 1940's wing designs failed. So they had to design a computer assisted autopilot to keep the thing stable. The spin off being that it helps make rc models much more friendly to wider groups of people.

I think most people aren't scared about real applications of AI like image recognition, language translation, hand writing recognition, voice recognition, and self driving cars because they're too useful. When you type a vague question into Google and it get the right answer are you scared or amazed. As long as it's useful and makes peoples lives better I think people approve of AI.
