I agree that it's overkill, but...

Why do men take steroids and get huge muscles if not to look like a superhero?

I do think many of the older men today in their 40s were inspired by superheroes and similar when they were young.

To some, the comics even opened their eyes to a superior physique which inspired them to achieve!

It's all nostalgia.

I understand your thoughts. This is entertainment, just like sports, just like bodybuilding. I would also argue the naivety of that same generation is the reason we're in the situation we're in now. They're hearts may have been in the right place on some things but they trusted the same government that has now been exposed as wolves and they were and today are tender little sheep.
