Title: Personal Trainer tells whale she’s too fat for his class:
Post by: Thin Lizzy on September 12, 2019, 03:39:20 PM
A story made for Getbig:

https://nypost.com/2019/09/12/personal-trainer-tells-woman-shes-way-too-heavy-for-his-class/

A 350-pound woman in the UK was rejected by a personal trainer who said she was “way too heavy” for his fitness class.

Lisa Parratt, 33, was mortified when workout instructor Gary Randall, who goes by the moniker “Buffmaster,” told her that she was “just too big” for his bootcamp program at UK-based gym Slimming World, which Parratt joined earlier this year.

Buffmaster told her that she has “gone too far” (in her weight gain). Damn that was rude. But she should NOT have gone to the media for her revenge. She still weighs 350, revenge or not. She is still a million miles away from being in shape.

Note: I do give her credit for attempting to join the fitness class

'Parratt says she’s been “overwhelmed” with the support she’s received on social media, including
the many offers of gym memberships and training sessions by other, more willing fitness instructors.'

Free gym memberships and training sessions?

It likely saved her the embarrassment of her having an asthma attack and puking or passing out in front of everybody, or feeling like she was holding the class back. ..... All of which I've had to deal with when instructing a bootcamp, and it's embarrassing for the instructor as well, not to mention it's an added difficulty because you have to adapt the class to accommodate someone who isn't physically able to keep up with the rest of the class if they've been doing it for any amount of time.

She's likely a better candidate for one on one training for a while first, but she probably couldn't afford it and the bootcamp was a cheaper option. Which is usually the case.

You are correct. He is a pompous jerk off at times (maybe just on the issues I disagree with), but I can tolerate his show because he has common sense on most things or at least explains his point rationally. Funny too, although I don’t like everything he jokes about.

She could look for a class for the obese. If all the other members in his class are in great shape, she's going to embarrass herself by attending and it is unlikely she could keep up with them. instead she's now made an ass out of herself by going public with it.

Note: He informed her via Messenger which is private. She went public with it a short while later.

Did someone give her a fat lip?

Nice run-on sentence where he used "your" wrong twice and "to" wrong once

She should have replied back that she would never waste her money on someone too fucking stupid to know the difference between "your" and "you're" and "to" and "too"

We’ve all made grammar errors, even you.

That said, he was right in not taking her on until she lost a bit of weight.

Most people don't judge the expertise of a personal trainer by their poor grammar.

Well, reading his reply to her, he's rude and has no social as, but what he said wasn't inaccurate. What he should have done was tried to sell her private one-on-one training first. The dude is just guilty of being rude and having no tact, which won't serve him well as a trainer in a "corporate gym", but at least he said it via msg, not face to face.

This lady chose to make the "conversation" public and further embarrass herself.

I see this as a no-contest. Both people lose. She got her feelings hurt and suffered no monetary damages, however she goes public with it with the intent on inflicting monetary damages on him. If I were him, I'd sue her, however lawsuits are handled differently in the UK, not to mention it's a socialist country full of whining social justice warriors who would probably side with the obese crybaby.

He messaged her as opposed to talking to her in person. I disagree that this was the best way to handle it. For the most part people are much more tactful when face to face with someone. Think about how often Getbig posters are misunderstood and people take things the wrong way.

Is she really 350 pounds? 160 kilograms? Lord have mercy, that's crazy insane fat. That's "I can't fit in an airplane seat" fat. That's just so piggish.

25 years ago I weighted 282 pounds and felt HORRIBLE. I was monstrous. And incredibly unhealthy.

350 pounds? Aqua aerobics. Threadmill one hour every morning. Repeat for one year.

If used the same language face to face that he used via msg, it'd likely sting and insult her more. If he met her face to face and used more tact, she may have gotten off easy and may not have gotten the hint. He might be thought he was doing a favir by telling her the brutal truth. If she continues to have people treat her like a snowflake and tell her she's "unique and fine as long as she's happy" or whatever nonsense and she doesn't lose weight and continues on at 350lbs, going half-assed at the gym 3x a week just waddling on a treadmill for 30mins, God forbid she breaks a sweat, she's gonna have diabetes and heart disease within a decade.

Muscleheads figure they know what to do if they were really fat. Losing fat when obese is not at all easy. It isn't just treadmills and aqua aerobics.

Diet has to be implemented somewhere sooner than later. Again, fat people know all about dieting.

Anyway, why didn't this super trainer accept her and then make sure he keeps an eye on her so that she doesn't overheat, etc.?

Yes it is, there is nothing difficult or complicated about eating less and moving more. Usually these disgusting piles of shit show massive weight loss in just the first week when they finally stop living like a slob

I am 100% against fat acceptance. I even believe in fat shaming in a proper manner. However every single time a fat person is making an effort to get in better shape/health whether it be at a gym, in a boot camp, attempting a diet, etc, they should absolutely be encouraged and helped.

This instructor was in the wrong in a big way.

At 350LB, she wouldn’t be able to do: one push-up, one sit up, or one repetition of body weight lunges. Nor a plank. Nor a burpee. She would not be able to jump rope in any capacity. Nor could she perform jumping jacks.

Her intentions were good. But she was not being realistic when she thought that she could join the class.

It seems as if there are two extremes some people go to when dealing with obese folks. They either shame them or they coddle them. Neither approach is helpful.

There were better ways to make the same point....focus on her potential for injury from trying to do too much, too soon...focus on the economics of paying for a class she isn't going to get the full benefit from...focus on the likelihood of her becoming discouraged by the constant failure associated with trying to a workout that everyone else around her can do.  You then offer some constructive advice and alternatives that suit her fitness level...if you know a trainer that has the patience to work with someone who...needs work then make a referral.

That's how a professional would handle it.

He was somewhat of a dick about it and his writing skills are clearly not Getbig caliber but his point is correct. She needs to first lose some weight. Exercising when you’re that much overweight is just going to result in structural injuries: bones tendons and ligaments.
