I wonder if a scenario like that could actually pan out in real life...back in the day, PRIDE would have some interesting pairings. Say, a 5'11" / 180-lb fighter versus a 5'10" / 270-lb fighter.
If my memory is correct, that above fight actually happened, and the smaller guy won. :o I seem to recall that the larger guy was the son of an American serviceman in either South Korea or Japan, and an Asian mother. I could be wrong though - it's been a while since I watched it.
It would be cool to see match-ups like that again, but maybe the sports insurance company doesn't want to provide medical coverage in those cases, because they think the risk of death is higher.
That might be a big part of why there are weight classes. Of course, size matters. But I think it could be that insurance companies think it matters more than it actually does, and getting coverage is easier, if there are stated weight classes.
That might also be the reason why the heavyweight limit in the UFC is 265-lb. Maybe the UFC is worried that heavier guys have a bigger chance of dying.
This was a good fight - I need to check it out on UFC Fight Pass today. Talk about a bloody fight:
