Title: Coronavirus - My survival kit without gyms or training facilities
Post by: friedchickendinner on March 17, 2020, 08:22:10 AM
Gyms may be closed for a year, so you better get a home gym set up now or you will shrink!

Some advice right there!

And another MENSA candidate prognosticates that "gyms may be closed for a year". Source?

Vaccine will take at least a year to develop. Where do you think the virus will go until then? Do you think it will magically disappear so gyms can be opened? We are at the very beginning of this, not at the end of it.

Agreed.

Set an example for us - stop posting for 3 months while you build it.

Check back in mid June.

Not going to happen, we need to help eachothers in these tough times.

You don't understand the seriousness of this. You will. Eventually. And then you will look like a fool, and that's ok, because you're used to it.

Why would the gyms only be closed for 30 days when we are at the beginning of the spread?

You think everything will be back to normal in the middle of april?

Well I'm not joking. I don't see us getting back to regularly train at the gym anytime soon... I'm looking into home gym options.

Feels like a prison sentence.

Some people will come out after 12 months and all they did was watch Netflix.

A year is not what I heard. As of yesterday U.S. major gym's are closed until April 1, 2020. I'm pretty sure this is tentative, based on what's happening with the coronavirus.

https://www.lafitness.com/Pages/clubhome.aspx?clubid=523&utm_source=google&utm_medium=googlemaps&utm_campaign=maps

Update: A news article today says they are closed indefinitely. Indefinitely can mean that the period of closure is not yet determined. This is still a far cry from them being closed for a year.

Gyms won't be closed for a year. They will all go out of business. Along with many other businesses. It would crash the economy completely and become a much bigger problem than the Coronavirus. The governments are not that stupid - I hope. Or maybe the collapse is engineered all along and they'll (cockroach bought and paid for politicians, elites, globalists etc.) go hide in their bunkers till it is done...

Ultimately, public demand wins. Governments frequently impose restrictions which people don't follow even when it means breaking the law. During prohibition, alcohol was illegal. People did not stop drinking. In fact, they probably drank more.

It is not all you need. You also need somewhere to set it all up. I miss having a basement, which was almost ideal except for the fact that the ceiling was too low. Overhead lifts had to be done from a seated position.

Truth be told you don't need a lot of equipment.  Go on IronMaster's web site or Power blocks.  A pull up bar, dip, bench with adjustable dumbbell and you can do an amazing amount of effective routines. Another direction is an olympic bar, bench, squat racks, chin bar with dips. For a $1000-1500 you have a complete gym.

The last direction is to go the body weight route. A work out could go like this with minimal equipment. Looking around amazon I found a chin dip set up that ratcheted around a tree. Looked really sturdy.

1. Body weight squats
2. split leg jumps
3. pull ups and dip super sets
4. body weight row (face the ceiling and pull you body to the bar having your legs elevated.
5. Push ups (all kinds)
6. head stand delt presses. ( The majority will only be able to do feet elevated push ups)
7. single leg calf raises with leg locked. ( try it. Lock you leg without even a block and see how many full range you can do.  You would be shocked that for a guy that puts the pin really low for calf raises has trouble getting 15 with no weight.
8. various ab exercises
9. neck exercises like the wrestler bridge front and back
10. Maybe a package of exercise rubber bands. They are cheap and fit in a tiny package for some auxiliary work.
11. Don't forget conditioning exercises like burpees and mountain climbers.
12. Add some running both distance and sprints.  Drum solos are optional.

Never think body weight stuff is for beginners. You could take an Olympia winner and turn him into a mess of exhaustion and sweat with body weight stuff. I remember a guy writing to the Navy wanting to become a Navy Seal and asked what type of lifting program he should be doing. Navy wrote back their is no weight lifting in Seal training.

You're right - I've done Stew Smith's Police/firefighter prep course, and part of his ranger routine.   Tons of push ups / pull ups / running etc...…

My basement is similar to yours, but I painted the walls with garage floor apoxy in the gym area.  Made it feel a bit "cleaner"....although yours looks spotless.

robcguns. yes i have owned a gym for a long time recently ( bout 5 years ago) sold the building. got tired of the day to day stuff. we ( wife and i) moved . i have a nice garage gym with plenty of stuff in storage as i said. we have cardio stuff in the house with a small "paramount fitnerss trainer" gym. ( kinda like a universal but doesnt have as many stations) and we have a tanning bed too.  wife likes to work out in the house. lol.  i have machines mostly now since i will be 60 in may its just easier for me to pop a pin in and out and i feel it more in the muscles. plus its safer and not as hard on the joints etc. heres a few pics

Lol that's what my daughter did.  And she sat there and counted my reps... Then she and my 3 year old boy started talking to me and making me laugh during my sets.

Its a good change because in all honesty I very rarely train with free weights in the gym. Mainly do machines. So this is forcing me to do a lot more with dumbells now.

I've been slowly transitioning to solely machine workouts and while they are good for safety/less injuries, they never quite give you that deep burn felt with free weights. I'm not saying they're not effective, they certainly provide appreciable results, but free weights do give you a deeper stimulation of muscle (at least in my experience). Unfortunately, I find that free weights also lead to more injuries, especially when coupled with bad form.

How many cans of tuna do you have in stock? Those weights aren’t going to help you without the protein.

Here are the ones I got, I went with those because of the high number of positive reviews:
 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DWSPQQY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They've actually exceeded my expectations and have provided a pretty good pump for flies and heck even things like squats... But definitely could use some more resistance in some of these movements.  I'm almost tempted to order a second set just to double up and have more resistance, but not sure if shit will start breaking then lol

Thats pretty much why I switched, to avoid injuries, but I have been pleasantly surprised to see that I'm still getting stronger and bigger despite being in a caloric deficit or just around maintenance for some time now.

5 of the 5 am regulars join me - just as we used to work out 5 am - just now we are meeting same time at gym parking lot like we used to - doing more bodyweight stuff - etc

The sandbags and water cans - we have DB we carry along - we are going to make this work.

I have a lat-pull down setup in my garage along with a verticle bench press machine and some free weights.  I've trained there for nearly 28 years now.  Sometimes I train at a gym but mostly at home.

I can no longer handle any kind of real weight but as I used to tell people when I was younger, if it's heavy to you, then it's heavy.

Big Ach's Nose has been classed as a bio weapon by the CDC today, they found 4 strains of corona during expeditions in 1 of his nostrils, 1 from day 1 of the outbreak, leading them to believe it was sniffed up shortly after patient zero first ate a bat and became symptomatic. The ability of his nose to sniff up the virus in Wuhan, while located in Florida, has led authorities to believe it has the power to alter air currents on earth on a greater scale than previous thought.

One of the few positives about getting older is that you don’t need as much weight to push around. I’ve got 185lbs of plates, a  20lb and a 45 pound dumbbell, a bench and a few resistance bands and I’m good.💪

The brand I have is “fitness gear”. Got them on Amazon too.  I’ve had them for a few years and they’ve been serviceable. I only use them for exercises that replicate cable machines: pull downs, low rows and tricep push downs.

Thanks, brother.  I never imagined I would live past 50 and my father only made it to 56...Smoking and multiple exposures to Agent Orange in Vietnam and elsewhere (he was a riverboat captain during the Vietnam War) did him in or so the VA told my mother when they had her survivor benefit increased a bit.

What is important is doing what we can with what we have.  This is true for people and Nations such as Great Britain and the U.S.  The Civilized World will survive this and come out stronger.

I was on the IronMaster site and they said there deliveries are being delayed due to the volume of their sales during Corona.  Power blocks looked like they were sold out of a lot of their products. I think there is a run on home exercise equipment. Can't wait to see all this used stuff up for sale next year.

Many bodybuilders will be exposed for not being able to truly do sets of wide grip chin ups, a perfect exercise for bis and back. You can grunt and show off with heavy weight on lat pulldowns, swinging and lurching, time to get those wide grip chins in as there is no cheating and you'll know how strong you really are.

True but on another point many kip to get their reps and others never go all the way up nor all the way down. Much easier to get reps if you never get your elbows all the way down doing partials. I have stayed away from chins for about a year and I'm shocked how weak I am in them despite doing pulldowns. I am nursing an injury but I agree. Pullups are a lat builder and one of the hardest exercises going.

Ach, I got the same bands. Mainly use them for rotator type stuff. I have a fear of them snapping. Those power blocks you can train everything if you are creative with your exercise selection. On a side note I'm jealous of your nose. When you wake up you take a deep breath and you are finished breathing for the day.  I have to breath all day and it gets tiring.

Found out my gym was closing on Monday

On Tuesday I purchased an Olympic bar (used) with the following plates:  2x45, 2x35, 4x25, a pair of each of the following:  .5kg, 1kg, 1.5kg, 2kg, 2.5kg, 5kg
Today I purchase a Hoist Squat rack with chin up bar, 2 land mines (bought one and then went somewhere else and found another that came with a handle attachment so I bought that too.)  I also purchased a bench (made by Nautilus which is interesting) that will go flat, incline and decline
I also got a bunch of rubber mats (will likely get more).  I still need to get a curl bar and some  kind of dumbbell set up (I would like to find some dumbbell handles that I can load up to 80 or 90 lbs rather than getting a set of fixed weight dumbbells.

I've got all this piled up in my garage at the moment with my car on the driveway but after I clean up the garage I should be able get my car in the garage
I'll probably also buy another bar and a dip apparatus

Kind of looking foward to doing some old school full body workout and some higher frequency workouts.

Looks great! Can I sleep on it? The only place I have to put something that size right now is in my bedroom. That and my king-sized bed together won't fit, so the bed would have to go. Actually, I could leave my car out and put in on my side of the garage. But it is hot in the garage in the summer and cold in the winter. Not an ideal workout environment.

I have only myself to blame for this. If I didn't share my house with my daughter, her husband, my grandson, his fiancee and their soon to arrive baby girl. I'd have all kinds of room to set up a great home gym. But, family comes first.

Why do you share the house with them? Can they not provide for themselves?  If so, why is one even pregnant if they can’t clearly afford it

Your's are valid questions. The answer is yes and no.

My daughter and her husband can afford their own place. When my wife was alive, this was an arrangement we all agreed on and it mostly works. I bought this house to accommodate their sharing it with us. It is way too big for two people. We pretty much split the household expenses in half. They may pay me slightly more for utilities since there are four of them and one of me.

My grandson and his fiancee are definitely in no position to be having a baby. They stay here gratis for now. It is supposed to be temporary. I suspect temporary is going to end up being for several years. At least until one or both of them can get something better than an entry level job. At least they won't have the expense of childcare.

Actually, I have nothing to complain about. I've had many opportunities to change our living situation and haven't done so. The big trade off for me is that I am never lonely for company. If I were to get ill, they'd take care of me, just as they helped me take care of my wife when she was very sick. Friends come and go. Family is forever for better or for worse.

sorry but no the verticle leg press is not for sale. i love it.  i feel the thighs way more in this than reg leg press or the universal horizontal one on my machine. i had 3 of different types in my gym and sold them all but this one.( i had the 45 degree "hip sleds too) . im sorry for everyone whos gyms have closed  thats why i have always told people to at least get an olympic set and multi position bench and maybe a few dumbells to keep at home.  In all honesty we do not need alot of fancy equipment. old school workouts will do awesome with just basic stuff. great champs were made with minimal stuff. Its nice having alot of stuff but i kinda miss the old days. way back before working out became popular and even more confusing ( how to what to when to etc. eat this take this rest this amount etc) people nowdays are even more confused due to all the so called "experts" and all the so called "studies"  etc. Its basic work out hard give your body a rest eat good food and repeat.

I have a similar dumbbells with spin lock dumbbells.  If you have a strong table waist high you can make dumbbells quick with spin lock dumbbells. Spin lock dumbbells are just about as quick as any other system. The only thing you need in addition is a strong waist high table structure to hold your plates and to have a  comfortable space to make the dumbbells.

Nice pick. My Gold's Gym suddenly closed their doors without warning and posted that they "may" open in 2 weeks. No refunds or credits on membership fees.

I went to a friends yesterday who happens to have a power rack like yours and an Olympic weight set.  What a great workout. I forgot how nice it was to take my sweet time lifting heavy, with no waiting , lol.

I'm cancelling my membership today and buying something very similar to yours.

Thanks
I will check them out
Just curious why I would need a strong waist high table?

Prime have you always been an enabler?

Never thought about it that way. Considering what my daughter and son-in-law pay me, they could easily afford their own place. If they decided to buy a house and being as how he's a veteran, financing is easy.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it but for those without weights at home, you can get some really decent body weight only workouts off the Athlean X youtube site.  The guy really knows his stuff and let's face it... the Olympia will probably be cancelled this year so you don't have to worry about your prep for it.   Just try something different.  Who knows?  You may learn something new about your body and how to train better when you do get back in the gym.

Spin lock collar dumbbells are horrible. I had them when I first started to lift and having to spin them on and off every time you want to change a weight is absolutely dreadful. Who decided this was a good idea? Horrible, just horrible.

I have a king bed. If you promise to stay on your side, I might share it with you if you were in a pinch. Fair warning. We have three dogs all of whom like to jump on our beds and toss the covers.  ;D

A few pictures of my gym. It has two sides. I have a table that I can quickly make dumbbells up to 75lbs and for weights higher I have hex dumbbells. I'm missing some pictures of other equipment.

This is great.  So much space also. Calf machines!
You got it made Oldtimer!
