Here’s a reality that people need to learn: every science fiction creation is usually a projection of the values, concerns and fashion we have today into the future with some nifty gadgets. The original Star Trek had women in gash-flashing miniskirts and beehive hairdos. Ever watch The Next Generation? Take a look at their concerns and ideas about the future? Totally 80’s and early 90’s. Science fiction captures the now and puts it in a setting that it can be dissected in a way that the audience can consume without feeling threatened.
Seeing Kirk kiss a “negro” woman was okay, his mind was just being forced to by aliens controlling him. See, the future dealt with an issue in the zeitgeist without having to really deal with it. In DS9, Dax totally kissed another chick … but she’s really a man inside because she has a giant slug living in her chest. That’s how science fiction works.
Battlestar Galactica (reimagined) was the post-911 concern with the collapse of civilization from “others inside our masses” … just in a weird outer-space setting. Today, the zeitgeist is disease infection, automation taking our jobs, the rising conflict between the US and China and the fact that we are beginning to talk about “nano-technology” and what harm it can do.
Humanity, 200 years from now, will not look, act or behave AT ALL like they do in that TV show. It’s a beautiful show. My favorite on TV. It’s fun. But it’s silly in how illogical it is. But that’s okay. I don’t want to see a post-singularity reality of human beings being all genetically engineered and probably networked, living in peace in a post-scarcity future where we look little like we do and probably act even less like we do today. That would be boring. Know what’s fun? Projecting our prejudices and concerns into a nifty looking future with “almost totally realistic” looking future-tech. <wink wink>

On a hunting trip to Mongolia earlier this summer the US president’s son Donald Trump Jr killed a rare species of endangered sheep. A permit for the killing was retroactively issued after Trump met with the country’s president, according to new reporting from ProPublica.
Trump was accompanied by security from both the US and Mongolia on the trip, the outlet reported. The argali sheep, with its large horns, is considered a national treasure there, and permission to kill one is “controlled by an opaque permitting system that experts say is mostly based on money, connections and politics”.

In between the killing and the issuing of the permit the month after he left the country, Trump is said to have met with the president, Khaltmaagiin Battulga, suggesting the possibility of special consideration being given to the son of the US president.
“Trump Jr shot his argali at night, using a rifle with a laser sight, the guides said,” according to ProPublica. “He stopped the local hunting guides from dismembering it at the kill site, instead instructing them to use an aluminum sheet to carry the carcass so as not to damage the fur and horns, said Khuandyg Akhbas, 50, one of the guides. He also killed a red deer, which similarly required a permit.

The legality of the importation of big game trophies into the United States has been, like many other issues in the Trump administration, confusing and ever-changing. A court ruling found thereafter it was done improperly, allowing imports to continue.
