Title: Brian Shaw: $13,000 pound dumbbells?
Post by: SF1900 on June 28, 2020, 03:24:20 PM
The amount seems quite excessive for 12 dumbbells, although they are different weight, but still.  ??? ???

180-230 pounds

::)  No one ever said these strongmen were smart.  I paid $1 a pound for mine.

How long does this guy have before he's too old or he hurts himself?  A few more years and that's it.  What then?  Hope he has a plan B.

It’s worth it if he never damages them, and he uses them for many years.

He paid (assuming no discount) about right. They're stainless, custom machined dumbbells, shipped over from England, from a company that does super high end work. All that costs. Looking them up on the website, the cost in England for the same weight range is $10,400 British pounds, so the numbers check out - https://watsongym.co.uk/product/watson-pro-dumbbells-lbs/ .

Any custom machining jobs are expensive, I remember back in the early 2000's, they tried to have custom stainless plates made for the "Night of The Living Dead" Power meet, the price/lb was around $10.

Rogue's high end is a little under $6/lb on the high end, and Eleiko is similar. -

Both aren't as nice as Watson's, and don't go near as heavy.

Sometimes you just have to pay to get what you like.

So he got a pair of 180, 190, 200, 210, 220 and 230 lbs. That works out to 2460 lbs for what looks like stainless steel dumbbells, not cast, that are very heavy and usually a custom order. If the $13,000 he paid includes the substantial shipping cost from the UK and any taxes and duties, it works out to $5.28/lb.

Also that video has almost 1,000,000 views, and is the type that will get loads of views for years. People are curious about $13,000 dumbbells, people want to hate on $13,000 dumbbells, etc.... so even if he doesn't write some of the cost off on his taxes, they'll be paid for in Youtube views in a few years.

Shaw has definitely done well for himself.

He must be the most financially successful of all the WSM competitors although Savickas is also apparently successful too.
