Florida Sees Record Number of COVID Cases, Hospitalizations
MONDAY, Aug. 2, 2021 (HealthDay News) -- Florida reached another grim milestone on Sunday when it broke a previous record for COVID-19 hospitalizations that was set before vaccines were available.
The new hospitalization record came a day after the state recorded the most new daily COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, the Associated Press reported.
As of Sunday, Florida had 10,207 hospitalized patients with confirmed COVID-19, according to U.S. Department of Health & Human Services data.
The previous record was 10,170 on July 23, 2020, more than six months before vaccinations started becoming widely available, Florida Hospital Association figures show.
Florida now has the most per capita hospitalizations for COVID-19 in the United States, putting a heavy strain on hospitals, the AP reported.
On Saturday, there were a record-setting 21,683 new COVID-19 cases in the state.
Florida averaged 1,525 adult hospitalizations and 35 daily pediatric hospitalizations a day in the past week. Both are the highest per capita rate in the nation, Jason Salemi, an associate professor of epidemiology at the University of South Florida, told the AP.
"The recent rise is both striking and not-at-all surprising," Salemi said.
The more transmissible Delta variant has spread throughout Florida just as residents have resumed pre-pandemic activities. Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has ruled out mandatory mask mandates and vaccine requirements, and on Friday he said that school districts could not require students to wear masks when classes resume next month.
But wearing masks in schools might be a good idea, since there has been an unexpected rise in the number of children with the coronavirus at hospitals in Miami, many of them requiring intensive care, the AP reported.
Memorial Health's Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood had seven patients with COVID-19. At Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami, there were 17 patients with COVID-19 on Friday, including six in the ICU and one who needed a ventilator, Dr. Marcos Mestre, vice president and chief medical officer, told the Miami Herald.
About half of the patients were under 12, Mestre said, and the rest were older and eligible for the vaccine. But none of the patients with COVID-19 at Nicklaus Children's on Friday were vaccinated. Most children who get COVID-19 do not need hospitalization, Mestre added.

Remind me of the last business that pulled up stakes from Florida to head up north, because of the pandemic again.
When some of my relatives from up north came to visit late last year, they were in utter SHOCK to see how "normal" things were here.
I even mentioned my gym being closed just three months; then they had the whole reservation-for-an-hour thing. That later got dissolved by the end of September.
You guys in Cali were supposed to have WrestleMania 37 this year. But, they moved it to where WM36 was supposed to be in 2020: Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. And don't forget the Mr. Olympia is here (Orlando) AGAIN in October.

Our state is already screwed it was screwed before Newsom although I must say Newsom also makes Brown look like a Republican and if Newsom keeps his post in September, we’ll be totally fucked. With zero science backing it, Garcetti mandated masks just in time for schools to reopen in LA. On the Newsom front, his recall is coming up September 14 and his using the fake numbers of increasing Chinavirus numbers to justify mail in ballots. The state’s seven-day average of new cases was 17,756 as of Aug. 3, up from a seven-day average of 2,195 on July 3, a 700 percent increase.
The state set a single-day record of new cases for Friday, July 30, when it reported 21,683 new COVID cases to the CDC on Saturday.
January was the worst month of the Florida pandemic, with daily case counts routinely topping 10,000. That followed a surge in July 2020, when daily case counts and hospitalizations also topped 10,000, as there was not a vaccine yet. Hopefully, we will learn from our failures. Fear is a powerful motivator. Since the beginning of the pandemic, people have been afraid of the unknown. Although there have been pandemics in the past, I don't think any of them have affected so many people. I am not just talking about the people who got sick. Communication being what it is today, people who would have been left in the dark in the past know what's going on within a couple of days. Paranoia is rampant.
You may be right, maybe the world should have acted if everything was business as usual. Mostly old and sick people were affected in the beginning. Some see these folks as a drain on society. Most of us are not willing to vocalize this because that's not how human being operate...and some of us are old and/or sick.
I decided to live on the edge today. LOL! So I took myself out to breakfast....and no doubt exposed myself to COVID. But damn, it was a delicious meal and I had a great time. Maybe I'll start working out at the gym next week. I'm on a roll. ;)
