Any of you resident Libby's care to explains this? Florida is lowest in the country with covid cases. California has some of the strictest mandates in the country and the highest percentage of vaccinated people. What's your excuse?

"This is great news! For two weeks and counting, Florida has had the lowest rate of new COVID-19 cases in the entire country – with no mandates, vaccine passports, or lockdowns. Overall, COVID hospitalizations have been declining for more than 70 days straight, and we’re at an all time low in terms of the number of COVID patients hospitalized statewide," Gov. Ron DeSantis' press secretary, Christina Pushaw, told Fox News on Monday when asked for comment about Doctor's Hospital in Sarasota.

Perhaps Floridians most likely to get sick with COVID did so in August. In mid-August, Florida was averaging about 25,000 new cases a day, or about 116 for every 100,000 residents. That was the worst rate in the U.S. — and one of the worst in the world.
In all of 2020 — before vaccines essentially eliminated the risk of death for most recipients — 23,384 Floridians died of COVID-19. Now nearly as many — 21,000 and counting — have died in the past four months alone. And another 135 Floridians are still dying, on average, every single day. Florida is one of the only states where more people have been dying each day during the Delta wave. Florida’s peak daily COVID death rate was 2.5 times higher than California’s last summer — and nearly six times higher this summer. Oddly enough, dead people can't get COVID.

I am not sure those stats are meant to support just the vaccine, but relate to the benefits of all precautions, i.e. shutdowns and masks. These help explain the current (as of today) difference in numbers between Florida and California. COVID seems to come in waves which last about 2 months or so, Florida's numbers are better than California's because Florida's wave hit in August, and it hit hard. California is likely in the midst of a wave.
Keep in mind that only 60% of Floridians are vaccinated. Not the lowest number in the country, but not the highest either. Further, Californians aren't doing much better on the vaccine front with 61% vaccinated.
Many people were erroneously thinking the vaccines would wipe out COVID. This has proved not to be the case yet and may never. It does seem likely that the vaccines reduce the intensity of the virus in people so fewer are getting seriously ill and dying.
Another thought is that when the number of COVID cases drops, folks become more lax in taking precautions, masking, social distancing and getting vaccinated to avoid getting it. This is human nature at play. It creates opportunity for the next wave.
Clearly nobody has all the answers...probably very few answers at this point. This 'thing' has only been with us a couple of years. Expect that it will continue to plague us for some time and it may never completely be eradicated. Studies based on statistics help us better understand what we are dealing with.

"Cases" are meaningless nonsense. Cold/flu season = cases. More testing = cases. All that matters is deaths specifically all-cause mortalities. No jump in all-cause mortalities = no pandemic.
