I took a 2-hour Power Skating class (on ice) this morning wearing men’s hockey skates.

I think my legs are going to be very sore tomorrow.

The two people teaching the class could skate backward faster than I could skate forward.

I did a lot of roller skating when I was young but never tried ice skating. I don’t think it would have been pretty

I started playing hockey as a winter diversion in upstate NY 10 years ago. I didn't know how to skate so I practiced at a local ice rink at lunch time. I just held one hand against the boards to steady myself and did laps. Got to be good enough after a few weeks. For skating backwards I did the same thing but going backwards for my laps. It works faster than you think!

I’ve ice skated a lot growing up, but the Power Skating lesson was different and quite fun.

I was working on doing the cross-over drill with my feet in corners and fell down a few times. There were probably 6-7 business men type guys there learning to skate better for their “Men’s League” hockey. I think I would have been better if I had a hockey stick to use for balance.

I think the class was aimed more at people who could skate, but wanted to get better, or more efficient, at it. I took it mostly for the exorcise.

One of the instructors was an ex-pro hockey player (I forgot his name) but even though he was probably 45-50 years old and 40-50 lbs overweight he cornered so fast that you could hear his skates cut the ice. He literally could make ice chips fly up in the air in mid-corner.

I practiced my hockey stops quite a bit, but flew over the top doing those too. I still think I need a stick for balance.

Yes- hockey players are amazing skaters. I found once I got all padded up my skating actually improved because I was willing to take more risks. I also found my lower legs got very strong eventually, allowing me to balance on one leg without thinking about it.

Been doing the early morning empty stomach thing for twenty years now, post competitive days, losing a bit of muscle was no longer any concern. Clears my head for the upcoming day, therapy more than a workout these days.

Leg day: No warm ups shown, only work sets. Done in my basement gym.

Leg press 2 x 12
Squats 2 x 8 then 1 x 1
leg extensions 2 x 20
seated leg curls 2 x 15

Hanging leg raises 2 x 22 (fairly straight legs. concentrated on curling in the hips at the top)

Hard to explain this one. I did one leg knee ups off a block with a contraption called monkey feet. Basically a modern version of the old iron boot. It really holds a dumbbell secure to the boot and the boot to your shoe. Did 1 x 12 each leg. Anyone interested in buying monkey feet I can give you my review of the good and the bad points. They are great for standing leg curls too.

Standing calf 2 x 15
Seated calf 2 x 15

Four way neck machine 2 x 25 reps each side.

Sorry for the loss of your friend.

When you are really young - death of someone your age is shocking and seems so unnatural

When you are really old - death is sad, but expected somewhat and the person lived a long life.

But in our 40's - its a little of both, in the worst ways as mortality becomes more real.

My first death of a close friend was a college classmate who was a broadcast tech who worked for NEP in Los Angeles with the nickname "Falcon"...He just stopped answering his house phone...after a few months trying now and then I got through to his widow who told me what happened.

I have had a close friend in high school smack his Mach Mustang head on into a concrete truck his freshman year in high school...But Falcon was different, he didn't have an fatal accident...He got sick and died of lymphoma.

Decided to go with a bit more volume for a while trained delts today

Seated front press paused at clavicle - 5 working sets each set to failure taking a bit weight off each set so always fail in the 8-10 rep range
Press behind neck - as above but just 3 sets
Lateral raise - 3 sets to failure with 30 seconds rest reps were 16,6,5
Incline side lateral - 2 sets to failure

Rear delt exercise where stand sideways by high pulley and pull across the body one arm at a time hard to explain but feels great but fuck knows what they called

Rear laterals 1 arm at a time

Rear delt excercise standing with barbell behind back and raise it up and back as far as can brief pause at top no idea what these are called either

Not much mate first set was 70kg/154lb and reduced 5kg each set. I’m piss poor at pressing in general but especially overhead

That's decent mate. Anybody who can overhead press 200 pounds ie. 90 kg for a good clean single is STRONG.

Thanks mate best was 80kg for 5 but even then doubt I’d get 90 for 1 strict as for some reason on overhead pressing adding just an extra 2.5kg feels like a shitload more weight been added and knocks a few reps off

If they clean the weight and press it I would agree.

Reminds me of the Gold's Gym I went to here in South Carolina. Honestly, I don't miss it at all. Invested in a set of dumbbells and a bench and work out at home now. or legs I just cycle, doing sprints 2x a week.

Today is leg day.

After work i'll do something like this.

Front BB squats 4 sets of 10-12
BB Lunges 4 sets of 10-12
Standing Ham curls 4 sets of 12-15
Seated calf raises 4 sets of 30 (i prefer higher reps for calves)

Might do some abs too. The gym has this amazing ab crunch machine that hits just right. Slow and controlled, 4-5 sets of 20-30. Squeeze!

Then i will feast on fish, veggies and rice. Probably have a glass of wine too, like a champion.

Chest and bicep day. No warm up sets listed. Just work set.

Dumbbell bench press 1 x 8 (slow negatives and moderate speed positives)
Decline dumbbell press 1 x 10 (made the moderate weight heavy with a full range of motion and slow negatives)
Dumbbell pec flies 1 x 15
Push ups 1 x max

EZ curl 1 x 16
Alternate dumbbell curl 1 x 10
Barbell drag curl 1 x 15
Concentration curl 1 x 13

Wrist curl 1 x 30
Wrist extension 1 x 20

Incline sit up 1 x 27
Pulley crunches 1 x 40

I was going to do a little cardio but I feel shot.  Yesterday I ran a junk one mile at a 9 minute pace and I was wheezing bad from the cold and leaf mold no doubt. I sounded like I had bad asthma. Maybe I will hit the treadmill later.
