I met Bill March in the York Gym in September 1965. One day he did an impressive standing press of 375 pounds. The guy had huge thighs as well. He even won some bodybuilding contests in those days. Bill and others were doing static contraction training then. So for a week I tried it, too. The idea was to train on M W & F. Take curls for example. You would train in a rack and have the lower bar set to rest the barbell on. On Monday you would set the high bar at where you wanted to hold the weight at. Then you did 3 sets of 10 seconds with as much weight as you would manage. That was a brutal work out. On the Wednesday and Friday you would change the height to hold the weight against. High, medium and low. On the Saturday you would do a curl to see what you could lift. If you did a hold for each muscle group you were exhausted. I actually put half and inch on my arms that week. Since I never had access to a rack I stopped doing that intense training. Bill showed me how to do it. Hard to believe that was 57 years ago. I was there when Larry Scott won his first Mr Olympia in New York. John Grimek said it was a fixed contest because he heard that Larry's name was engraved on the trophy he won. I don't think anyone who was there agreed with John. Larry received an applause that has yet to be duplicated in bodybuilding since.
