Title: Height and genetics (Coach, come forth)
Post by: NoPEDsNoBB on December 30, 2022, 09:05:58 PM
I never really believed that genetics play a large part in height..
I believe(d) it's mostly due to other factors such as diet...
In the same way that a fat parent will usually have a fat kid...
It's just bad or good HABITS passed down from parents to kids.

Mainly because I remember reading about the Dutch being some of the shortest people on the planet a couple hundred years ago and now they are the tallest.
So if it was all about genetics then explain that ^

Coach, please speak/expand on this
lol…he’s 6-6’1 and about 205. My oldest is 6’5 260. You should meet them 😂

"The Dutch were once short
In fact, back in the mid-1800s, along with France and Italy, they were one of the three shortest countries out of the six investigated. From 1820 to 1875 median Dutch male height hovered around 165 centimetres before shooting up more than 15 centimetres over the last 130 years."

"tallest race on earth" (google)
"Dutch people are the world's tallest, with an average height of 175.62cm (5 feet 7.96 inches.) Dutch men are an average 182.53cm (5 feet 11.86 inches) tall. Dutch women are an average 168.72cm (5 feet 6.42 inches) tall."

I also saw a doco around 5 years ago where scientists were experimenting on insects with different oxygen levels and the insects that were given more oxygen grew more. Much more.

As with pretty much everything, I think it's one's genetic endowment being mediated by environmental factors. Your genes contain the instructions for you to grow, but things such as chemical exposure, stress, nutrition, etc., will affect the extent to which you would reach this genetically predetermined height. I might just be regurgitating bullshit, but I'm sure there's a significant height difference between North and South Koreans that's thought to be down to a lack of nutrition.

Edit: I didn't see the geneticist's comment in the photo, but yeah, I think he nailed it. Genes, environment, and whores, lol.

Good post.
I looked into Koreans height and you're right.  S.K's are taller on average by 2".

Just imagine how tall you`d be if you ate good food instead of fast food garbage and vomit gravy! ;D
