I don't think I've watched anything with him in it for quite some time. He gave a decent performance in this but it was sabotaged by the unbearable overacting of the guy playing Poe. In some scenes, I could almost sense Bale thinking 'oh, fuck, this movie is going to suck'.

I also feel Sam Jackson should have won for Pulp Fiction and Val Kilmer for Tombstone.....both played the parts to the hilt and were just overlooked....but like you said....lots of competition.
