Blue city and state morass, compliments of those who don't enforce the law.
Mail Delivery Halted for an Entire Seattle Zip Code
ELAINE MALLON 20 May 2023
Seattle residents in the 98118 zip code had to pick their mail up at the post office last week after the United States Postal Service paused delivery due to rising thefts.
“Mail delivery to less than 900 residents in parts of south Seattle was affected last week because of equipment security concerns. Improvements to the affected equipment were made, and all mail was delivered to the impacted residents,” Postal Service spokesperson Kim Frum told Fox News Digital.
The delivery pause was tied to thieves stealing a master key used by postal workers to open cluster mailboxes found in apartment buildings all throughout the city, KIRO 7 reported. Mail delivery resumed this past Tuesday.
While some residents received a notice from their apartment building of the pause, others said they learned through Facebook or by talking to neighbors. Residents had to go to the post office to pick up their mail. Some waited more than 45 minutes, only to be turned away when the post office closed at 5:00 p.m.
Resident Juana Esquibel said she tried picking up her mail three times and even got off work early to pick it up.
Nancy Truittpierce told KING5 that the post office could not give a date when delivery services would resume:
“I was asking one of the women when I was picking up my mail, ‘How much longer?’” Truittpierce said. “They don’t even know; they can’t tell us. They’re telling us to rent a post office box; that’s not an answer. That’s a ridiculous answer; there are people who aren’t able to do that.”
The United States Postal Service announced robberies of mail carriers are 50% higher than last year, KIRO 7 reported. Robberies have more than quadrupled in the last decade, with criminals targeting Arrow and Modified Arrow Lock (MAL) Keys, Fortune reported. USPS is currently in the process of replacing 49,000 of the arrow lock keys with electronic versions to deter criminals from robbing mail carriers.

What a nuisance. No lock on my mailbox nor most of them in my neighborhood. Can't imagine how the Post office could fix this problem. Seems like all the mailboxes would need to be rekeyed.
Looks like the problem may be resolved. https://mynorthwest.com/3888368/mail-delivery-halted-entire-zip-code-south-seattle/ and folks should have received their mail today. I would worry that the thief made copies of the master key.

Portland, Oregon, lost $1 billion between 2020 and 2021 as residents fled rampant homelessness and crime, taking their tax dollars with them.
According to an analysis of Internal Revenue Service data by Oregon Live, Multnomah County, where Portland is located, hemorrhaged 14,257 persons filing taxes, resulting in a record loss of $1 billion in revenue.
Those who moved were also relatively wealthy, with the former residents holding incomes 14% higher than persons who had moved out of the area the year before. Over the course of the year, the average income of county residents who stayed declined slightly.

Mayor Wheeler’s plan must be working because recently I had an annual appointment with the dermatologist in N.E. Portland near Emanuel Hospital. A year ago, there was a large encampment on the sidewalk surrounding an electrical power station on the street where the doctor's office is located. This year there was nary a sign of even one homeless camper. For a moment I wondered where those homeless campers went.

California Restaurants Say They’re Nearing ‘Extinction’ Because of Rampant Lawlessness
Restaurateurs say that fear of carjackings and other crime is keeping people from dining out in Oakland
Published 09/19/23
Restaurateurs in Oakland, California, are saying crime rates — and the publicizing of crime rates — are tanking business and contributing to closures.
Fear of theft and carjackings in the area has led to a decrease in diners going out to eat, according to SFGATE, and recent crime statistics show that those fears are not entirely unfounded.
According to the Oakland Police Department's citywide crime data, motor vehicle theft was up 5% in 2022 from 2021, carjackings were up 1% and commercial burglary was up 76%.
While crime has been increasing over the past five years, according to the datasheet, SFGATE points out that some of these rates are still lower than they were pre-pandemic.
Local restaurateurs told the outlet that stories of cars getting broken into and other instances of crime have been a huge topic of conversation on public and social media platforms, and they're saying it's making people steer clear of the area.
One restaurant general manager, Ryan Dixon — who says his restaurant's business is down 25% and his staff has decreased by 20 people — told the outlet that the Bay Area has a terrifying perception of what it's like in Oakland, and said people tell him they don't feel safe coming to visit (or patronize the businesses) from the suburbs.
"We want them to be safe. We want their cars to be safe. We want them to come back. Our biggest problem right now is our lack of revenue because of people not coming," he told SFGATE. "Hyping up the crime here scares more people away."
Some restaurants have been able to take matters into their own hands — one eatery leased a parking lot so diners had somewhere safe to leave their cars — but others can't afford the cost and look to the city to help.
SFGATE reports that government officials have allegedly left the local businesses without aide, and missed a recent deadline to apply for grant money that would help combat organized retail theft.

An interesting pattern.
Here are the 10 U.S. cities with the highest homicide rates and the last time each had a Republican mayor:
1. St. Louis, MO – 1949
2. Baltimore, MD – 1967
3. New Orleans, LA – 1872 👀
4. Detroit, MI – 1962
5. Cleveland, OH – 1989
6. Memphis, TN – 1967
7. Las Vegas, NV – 1975
8. Kansas City, MO – 1991
9. Newark, NJ – 1953
10. Chicago, IL – 1931 👀
Bad policies destroy great cities.
If the leadership doesn’t change, you have 3 choices:
•Change the policies
•Change the city you live in
•Accept the consequences
But choose—because doing nothing is a decision too.

Holy smokes. So again, you ignore the actual issue. The issue is a business leaving the city due to crime. And your response is essentially: nothing to see here.

Holy smokes. So again, you ignore the actual issue. The issue is a business leaving the city due to crime. And your response is essentially: nothing to see here.
Watch what happens to Safeway's prices with less competition.
Holy smokes. So again, you decide the actual reason based on your own issues, and not the facts. Since you do not live in Portland, how would you know the reason WalMart closed these stores except for what you read in the media, which we both know often focuses on what folks want to believe rather than the truth.
Walmart closed its last two stores in Portland, Oregon, in March 2023 primarily due to underperformance and not meeting financial expectations. Theft/crime was not the primary reason.
Key Reasons for Closure:
1. Financial Performance: The official reason cited was that the stores weren't meeting financial goals.
2. Retail Theft/Shrinkage: Walmart's CEO had spoken about theft impacting profits. and while not the sole cause.
3. Operational Factors: A combination of location, customer needs, population, and proximity to other stores were all considered during the review process.
4. Broader Trend: These closures were part of a larger trend of Walmart closing underperforming stores nationwide, not just in Portland.
The WalMart Neighborhood market is alive and well in West Linn, OR. The two other grocery stores here, Market of Choice and Safeway, are also thriving.
Portland, OR is a city made up of distinct and unique neighborhoods. Neighborhood grocery stores in Portland are generally thriving, with local favorites like New Seasons Market winning "Best Of" awards and regional players like Market of Choice expanding.

I believe the resident who was interviewed as part of the story I posted. He blamed crime. I also believe the crime stats posted in the story. Do you disagree with him and the crime stats? If so, why?

The article I read showed that crime was not the main reason that Walmart Superstore closed, but it was part of the reason. The store was nearly 30 years old, opening in 1997 and remodeled in 2012. It closed in 2023.
The former Eastport Plaza Walmart in Portland is now home to a large Hong Phat Supercenter, a major Asian supermarket that opened in July 2024, along with other smaller businesses like restaurants, a salon, and a travel agency.
A bit of Nostalgia. Nothing stays the same. Time changes everything.
When my wife and I first moved to Portland in 1966 from Los Angeles, we rented a house for $82 a month six blocks east of this Walmart superstore, although at that time it was a Safeway grocery store, which we frequented for groceries.
My coworkers at Meier & Frank in downtown Portland questioned why we rented a house "out in the boonies." LOL! Back then, Lents was a nice family neighborhood with single family old Portland style homes. Back then crime was so non-existent we often didn't bother to lock our door. Our son was born when we lived there.
According to Zillow, the house we rented is valued at $426,000 and based on the photos, it looks about the same as when we lived there. Amazing!
The L.A. Fitness gym I sometimes go to is at Eastport Plaza shopping center, throwing distance from that Walmart store. The gym has a large Asian clientele. Although it is about 20 miles from where I currently live, I go there because they have an abundance of equipment. I almost never wait for a station to free up.
I am pleased to say I have never been the victim of crime at Eastport Plaza. So based on personal experience, I can neither agree nor disagree with the person who was interviewed. However, according to what I have read, the Lents neighborhood unfortunately, has a high crime rate. This makes me feel sad because it was not at all the case in the late 60's.
The Iconic, flagship, downtown Portland Meier & Frank store where I once worked, first opened in the early 1900’s. It was family owned for decades. It was bought by Macy’s around the time I started working there. Later, it was rebranded as Macy’s. The building is still there today. It was converted into a luxury hotel, The Nines, opening in 2008.

Holy smokes. So again, you ignore the actual issue. The issue is a business leaving the city due to crime. And your response is essentially: nothing to see here.
Watch what happens to Safeway's prices with less competition.
He would rather turn a blind eye than admit liberals are causing crime.

If you are going to try and contradict an article or story, you should at least read or listen to the story first. It's a 2 minute and 48 second clip. Do you agree with the business owner who attributes the move to rising crime? If not, why not?
Do you agree with the crime statistics they posted for that neighborhood? If not, why not?

Here is the link again:
I did not contradict the article or story. I watched the clip. I listened to what the business owner said. I looked at the statistics which listed the types of crimes committed in that area. Also, I did not contradict the person who was interviewed remarks. In fact I replied that Lents has a high crime rate. Which in the stats shown, you will notice did not include shoplifting, although I have little doubt this is an issue as well. Did you not notice that Walmart said the primary reason they closed that and other Portland stores was because they were underperforming.
I can neither agree nor disagree with the crime statistics posted in that neighborhood since although I sometimes go to L.A. Fitness which is literally next door to the old Walmart super center which closed down in 2023 and which has since reopened as a large Asian marketplace along with some other businesses.
I live in a suburb of Portland and sometimes go to a gym at Eastport Plaza in the Lents walking distance from where Walmart once had a superstore. I occasionally buy meals at nearby restaurants in Eastport Plaza, shop at Standard Appliance which is on 82nd in Lents, and never had a bad experience related to crime in that area, yet you take exception to what I posted about crime in this area.
What is it with you? Do you enjoy arguing so much that you invent reasons to do so? Come to Portland, work out at L.A. fitness in Lents, buy yourself lunch at the neighborhood Greek restaurant which has amazing Falafels, check out the Hong Phat Supercenter which replaced the shuttered Walmart store, take in a movie at Cinemark Century Eastport Plaza 16, and determine for yourself how crime ridden this neighborhood is.

Ethos Commercial Advisors Secures Acquisition Financing for Eastport Plaza Shopping Center in Portland
February 24, 2025
PORTLAND, ORE. — Ethos Commercial Advisors has arranged acquisition financing for Eastport Plaza, a neighborhood shopping center in Portland. Situated in Portland’s Jade District, the 275,518-square-foot property is anchored by Ross Dress for Less, LA Fitness, Dollar Tree, a Regal movie theater and an assortment of national and local tenants.
The buyers successfully backfilled the former Joanne’s Fabric with a national tenant to occupy 28,000 square feet to bring the center to 95 percent occupancy. Daniel Natsch and Matthew Illias of Ethos Commercial Advisors arranged the five-year, fixed-rate loan with a life insurance company. The loan featured a 66 percent loan-to-value ratio.

I'm not arguing with you. I asked you questions. You feel threatened by those questions. It's ok. I'm not attacking you or trying to convince you of anything. I was actually trying to understand your thinking as an Oregon resident and how your view might differ from the business owner interviewed as part of the story. But you can't even do that. You can't even say whether you agree or disagree with crime stats from your own community.
Walmart and other stores often don't trash the communities when they close locations. For example, Walmart recently closed a location in downtown Honolulu. Everyone knows it was because of shoplifting.
Here is what Walmart said about the closure:
A company spokesperson said the decision to close the store was difficult but necessary after a thorough review process was conducted. The spokesperson did not identify a specific reason for the closure, but said several factors are considered, including historic and current financial performance.

Here is what people in the know said about the closure:
“When you have a boarded up space, it brings in bad elements. Not only homeless, but drug problems, gangs -- it’s not a safe place,” said real estate expert Stephany Sofos.
Sofos also said the bad elements include shoplifters.
“There’s so much shoplifting, and the way the laws are written in Hawaii, that if you shoplift, you’re not going to go to jail, and so people are doing it,” she said.

It's pretty naive to rely on public statements by Walmart and ignore statements by actual business owners and residents.

You wrote, “You feel threatened by those questions.” You don’t know what I feel; you may think you do, and you are mistaken. I am not threatened by your questions or anyone else’s.
I previously agreed that the Lents neighborhood has a high crime rate when I posted “…according to what I have read, the Lents neighborhood unfortunately, has a high crime rate.”
The Eastport Plaza Walmart shuttered the store in March 2023. The two-year-old video in the link from X you provided was posted on December 2025. Governor Greg Abbot lives in and is the governor of Texas. The Walmart being discussed is in Oregon, why not interview Tina Kotex, Oregon’s governor?
I assume the business owner from Darrel's Economy Mufflers was interviewed in 2023. He spoke about crime in general in the area. Darrell’s Mufflers opened in 1984. If he is the original owner, he has been there for 41 years. A lot has changed in the last 41 years in Lents, including a rise in crime.
Below is the Portland Police crime chart for East Portland in 2023 as shown in the video you linked. I agree with them. But I also have no way of knowing if they are accurate.

While the information about the Walmart in Hawaii is interesting, it has little to do with the closed Portland Walmart and Portland crime rates.
I started working in retail in display and as a home furnishings coordinator when I was 18 years old . I worked at Meier & Frank for 20 years. Shoplifting was a problem in 1964 and is still a problem today. Meier & Frank’s security team had a large staff, some of whom were and still are friends. Shoplifting is not a new crime. The first documented shoplifting started to take place in 16th century London.
Shoplifting laws vary from state to state. In Oregon it is treated as theft, with penalties based on the value of stolen goods, ranging from a Class C misdemeanor for items under $100 (up to 30 days jail, ~$1,250 fine) to felonies for higher values (like $1,000+ being a Class B Felony). Charges involve concealing or removing merchandise without paying, and can result in jail time, fines, restitution, or civil lawsuits, with newer laws targeting organized retail theft with stricter penalties. Enforcement intensity varies by location.

Isn't it interesting that the manager of Defiant L's on X is not from the U.S.?
The X account Defiant L's is run by Rumen Naumovski, a national of North Macedonia.
Naumovski manages the account, which focuses primarily on American politics, from his home in North Macedonia. Thanks for providing your input on the Oregon crime stats. That is exactly what I was asking for.
Regarding shoplifting, there is a direct correlation between Soros-backed DAs refusing to enforce the law, states essentially allowing shoplifting and the destruction or departure of numerous businesses in numerous cities. I posted a thread the other day from San Francisco showing what looks like an empty shopping mall.
California businesses in particular have been hit the hardest.
