VanHagger sucked >:(
-
Hagar is a much better singer than Roth, but Roth had the better VH albums. I never liked the VH with Hagar.
I saw the final VH tour (2 dates) and Roth sucked pretty bad. Just talking the lyrics, making the crowd sing half the songs, etc.
Seeing Alex and Eddie live was fun, but it was very far from prime VH...
I saw Roths solo band as well in the early 2K's, also sounded bad vocally...
-
https://nitter.net/sammyhagar .
You can see Sammy's twitter up top there. For 75, he's really sharp, you'd think you were dealing with someone 20 years younger. Someone pointed that out a few weeks ago when people were talking about all these politicians self destructing.

I wen't to the original Monsters of Rock at the Meadowlands in NJ back in the day.
Metallica played before VanHagger.
....Did not go well for VH, they got blown out of the water and fans were leaving during their set.

The whole interview audio from the 9/15/15 show, 27:00 to pick it up from above video:

They were very radio friendly and popular for sure with general pop/rock audience, thats what really sells albums...
Hardcore VH fans though, many werent happy...

Metallica did that to a lot of bands - Dokken, Ozzy, etc
I actually missed that concert for work, but all my friends were at that Medowlands show.
Classic VH is a weird thing for me - loved their songs, but now when I hear them, all the dialogue in the songs is fuckin' gay, and so is DLR's squealing (you really got me, etc).....Unchained is so cool, but the dialgue ruins it.....shit like that

Dedicated employee of peace….
Yeah right...
Here’s what actually happened
His ex, Robin, wanted to ‘get back together’, so he went to be with her. His best friend Rick was “ready to rock”, but Rick was stuck at the concert alone (I don’t know why he puts up with it)
And it wasn’t a Metallica concert, it was Soundgarden
BTW: he ended getting stalked by a guy who claimed to be named Larry Tate, but he eventually found out that his real name was Jean-Luc Picard.

I saw Metallica (Master of Puppets) open for Ozzy (Ultimate Sin). Both fantastic performances.
Jake E Lee was something else on guitar.
Cliff on Bass for Metallica (he died during this tour), glad I got to see Cliff as he was a big influence on my own playing back then...

Scorpions kicked their ass too
You gotta feel bad for Dokken. Don Dokken begged the producers to let them go on before Metallica
I went there to see King George, Metallica, Eddy, and the Scorps

IMO Crue kicked Ozzy’s ass in 83 on the SATD tour

Yeah I wen't to that tour also and your right Jake E Lee was great but to me Metallica stole the show.
Ozzy was in the period where he was influenced by the LA music scene of the time and the band was all in spandex and poofed up hair and Mettalica was just performed in jeans and t-shirts.

True but the band was so much better then before the synthesizers and it was just awesome guitars and monster drums.

considering this is probably what they look like.....they aren't ashamed

Iron Maiden
Arch Enemy
Can probably find a lot of bands (Reo Chuckwagon, etc) who had better success after the initial singer left...

Yes this!
Diamond Dave once was the summit of fame,
I wonder what the guys who nailed Pamela Anderson in the ’90s think now…?
I wonder what the guys who nailed Marilyn Monroe in the ’60s think now…?
I wonder what the guys who nailed Greta Garbo in the ’30s think now…?
I bet they looked at the pics an thought: Been there, done that.

Yeah, to your last point, I get bay you’re saying. I thin Unchained is actually one of my favorite songs by VH, but I do kind of cringe in those parts. Panama and Everybody Wants Some it does the same thing. It worked then, but upon viewing it from my brain/todays lens it’s very corny.

I love Van Halen, yeah, Dave always had his Howls and whoo s, Van Halen one is a masterpiece recorded like a live album almost. Van Halen two had the covers and some Pop hits but some of that other songs were heavy and Overall Good album. Women and children first took them a little more mature, and again, tons of incredible. Eddie leads and intros. Yes songs like take your whiskey, home and fools and simple rhyme. I love that album too. Then they really get into some Slick production. With fair warning another great album with almost every song is great. Then comes the disappointing to most diver down, which has some pretty good tunes around all the covers which I still think that’s in the streets as a Good cover song. Some of the guitar work is still stellar on the album like hang them high, pretty woman, 1984 brought in the keyboards for a little bit on the record, but I’ll wait is a great song, Drop dead legs’ then Roth did his thing, and Eddie was tired of him And ready to move on I couldn’t believe he wanted The singer patty Smythe As a replacement. I saw them with Sammy Hagar bunch of times, love their records to still regard Eddie Van Halen as one of if not the greatest guitarist of all time for what that guy can do, how he played, how he Reinvented the way guitar can be played.
-
Yeah, weird but way more talented than Hagar. Without Roth in the group, the Van Halen brothers would've gone commercial from the get-go. And that's exactly what Van Halen did as soon as David left the group. Hagar would've put out a bachata album had Edward and Alex asked him to. Hagar is and will always be a contract front man. Dassit.

Sammy has the better voice, an excellent guitar player, Roth cant match his talent.
Roth however, was the better frontman in his prime, and put out the better/heavier music...
I honestly only liked VH1 and Fair Warning... Others had way too much fluff... (Like Prime working in a glory-hole)...

Prime Roth was much more of a Showman
He had also trained Monkey Kung Fu with Paulie Zink, so was very limber and agile with his kicks

All of the VanHagar albums reached #1. I think every album after Roth reached #1 but I may be wrong.
The first six (Roth) still sells loads.
The Hag era is dated and is quickly eroding from relevant memory. I dig a lot of it, but …
The first six, the REAL Mighty Van Halen, is mandatory in any rock and metal fans’ collection.
Dave is the greatest frontman of all time.
Unfortunately he’s now completely off his rocker.

That song/bass solo blows.
Never understood the reverence for it.
Actually, no one jerks off to it anymore. Was a hype.
When we didn’t know any better.
Talented and creative guy, sure, but “Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)” sucks ass.

A matter of tase and times I guess. Ive played Bass in metal bands for 40 years, its something I just liked.
His Rick sound, effects, etc.
But he's no Steve Harris, thats for sure (not many are)..

Dave took his look and moves from Jim Dandy of BOA... Even admitted it.
Everyone in music "borrows".
Its odd to me that they never did much for me (later on). Would crank VH 1 in 1979 when I was 13, after that I got heavier though.
Like, much heavier. early Motorhead, Hatchet, Venom, Mercyful, etc...
VH had too much poppy-fluff for my liking, though I was big on Eddie and Alex's playing...
Bummed I never got to see them in their prime though w/ Roth.
BY the time I got to see them (w/ Wolfie) Roth was horrific live...

Alex is one of the most underrated drummers of all time I think he was awesome in his day
As a lifelong drummer I think Alex was/is well respected. Considering he started off on Guitar and Eddie had the drum set I think that is pretty cool. At Drum clinics Alex's chops on several songs are examined and dissected. Maybe the general public doesn't sing his praises, but the general public doesn't know about 30 drummers that are phenomenal and likely on most of the records they listen to. Having said that, I do want to agree Alex is a phenomenal drummer. And the fact his brother was such an innovative guitarists.. it's like winning the musical genetics lottery.

None of the hair metal bands and shredders compared to them because of Alex on drums and the originality of Eddy.
