Here's what Namath said when asked if he saw any positives from Wilson's performance Sunday.

"No, I didn't take anything positive out of it yesterday," Namath said. "It was awful. ...

"You sit down? You sit down on a play, you go right down? What happened? I thought you were trying to win and make plays. You quit on a play? What is going       on? It's disgusting."

Damn. I felt bad for Joe when he said that. I mean the shame that was heaped on him...for what? He was 60 - 65 years old and loaded at the superbowl.

Fuck... Joe Biden says it to 7 year Olds all the time and no apologies from him.

Joe Namath is a grossly overrated "legend"

"Hall of Fame" despite throwing almost 40 more INT than TD.

The Jets' incredible defense won SB III, not Joe Namath.

Whether he is right on this particular point, I have no idea since I don't watch the NFL these days, but Joe Namath is a drunken clown.

He was never great by NFL standards. Decent QB for the 18 months of his career that he wasn't hurt. Just a loud personality that gullible fanbois ate up.

In his day he was rated #1 QB in the pro game in all metrics.

Do some research.

I respect your opinion so I'll have to research this. Not sure how someone with his INT/TD ratio could be rated even in the top half of the league but I'll keep an open mind.

Just a cursory review ...

Losing career record  62-63-4
Led AFL 2x in passing yardage but both seasons led the league in interceptions, threw more INT than TD both years
Led NFL 2x in interceptions without leading the league in passing yards
Lifetime rating 65.5 ; best season rating 74.3 (even Bert Jones pulled 78.2 and Billy Killer pulled 71.6 lifetime ratings)

I stand by my assessment.

The Jets were awful for most of Namath's career.

That's why he was injured all the time.  He was always hurt it seemed

His knees were shot.  Had his first bad knee injury at Alabama U.

Before that he was quite fast and a very good runner.

In the pros he was a statue but could still set up quickly and his arm was massive...the best of his time.

Namath put the AFL on the map with his bold prediction of victory and actual win against the powerhouse Colts in Super Bowl III.

Playing in NYC with his charisma made the merger of the two leagues a success, eventually putting $Billions into owners pockets.

In 1965, the AFL scored a television contract with NBC. That same year, New York Jets owner Sonny Werblin lured quarterback Joe Namath out of the University of Alabama to the AFL with the biggest contract in pro football history.

The first two Super Bowls proved the NFC (the former NFL) to be the better league, with Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers handling their AFC challenger easily. In Super Bowl III, however, Joe Namath and the New York Jets upset the favored Baltimore Colts and ushered in a new era of greater parity between the two leagues.

Up until recently the NFL HOF was the hardest enshrinement in all of sports. There are many legitimate candidates that don’t get in. It sucks Namath beat the Colts when you were a kid but to say he wasn’t one of the elite QB’s of his era is foolish.

Terrell Davis is a good “modern” comparison. Absolutely the best player of his career at his position but he was derailed by injuries so his career stats suffer but if you watched football you knew he was someone opposing teams  feared.

You also have stat compliers who look great on paper but shouldn’t be hall of famers, like Frank Gore.

Namath deserves to be in.

What defines a stat compiler?  Gore played on some abysmal 49ers teams, that’s not his fault.  Everyone knew he was the entire offense so they zeroed in on him, and he still averaged 4.5 y/carry and 8 yards/catch.  Most games played by any running back and 3rd all time rushing yards doesnt just happen by accident.

I don’t think he should be in the HOF because he lacks the “fame” but calling him a stat compiler is just disrespectful.

I think Joe and Derek Sanderson opened a bar together in NY back in those days. Bad move for alcoholics.
Must have gotten tons of puss though... Sanderson had the 1st million dollar contract in hockey I believe...

When watching a Bruins game many years ago where he did color, Fred Cusack said "You were a millionaire weren't you Derek"??

On January 2, 1965, quarterback Joe Namath spurns the NFL's St. Louis Cardinals to sign with the American Football League’s New York Jets. The contract, reportedly for  $427,000, is the most lucrative signed by a rookie in any sport. The deal with Namath, a star at the University of Alabama for head coach Bear Bryant, is a coup for the AFL.

"I took both teams into consideration," Namath told reporters in Miami Beach, Florida, where he signed the contract. "I wanted more than money. I was interested in the coach and the organization. New York City is a fine place. The sports fans are great and Weeb Ewbank is an outstanding coach."

Said Ewbank: "I see in this young man the same qualities as [Baltimore Colts star quarterback] Johnny Unitas. He has size, quickness, courage and a wonderful arm."

The AFL, founded in July 1959, was willing to do almost anything to lessen the NFL’s grip on the sport. With television contracts beginning to pump big money into professional football, the league offered lucrative signing bonuses to the best players in college football.

"We feel that in getting Joe, we got the No. 1 college football player in America," Jets owner Sonny Werblin said at the news conference.

At least one New York columnist was impressed by Namath: "I'm convinced of one thing," wrote Dick Young of the New York Daily News. "The Jets aren't paying him enough."

Like almost any record-setting contract that would follow, however, Namath’s deal was met with heavy criticism. Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell griped that ''contracts like the one Namath got can be the ruination of the game.”

Contracts continued to increase, but the AFL and NFL agreed to merge in June 1966.

In 1969, before New York played Unitas' Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, Namath famously guaranteed a victory. The future Hall of Famer's Jets beat the Colts, 16-7, in one of the greatest upsets in sports history.

THE START OF SALARY ESCALATION IN THE NFL.

Brodie was among the leading passers in the league throughout the 1960s. His best statistical year was 1965, when he led the league in passing yardage (3,112 yards) and passing touchdowns (30), leading to his first of two Pro Bowl appearances.

Following his outstanding 1965 season, in which he made about $35,000,[8] Brodie was courted by the Houston Oilers of the rival AFL.[9] Newspaper reports indicated that a contract with the Oilers paying between $650,000 and $1 million had been arranged.[9][10] After the NFL Giants signed kicker Pete Gogolak from the AFL champion Bills, offers to Brodie and other NFL stars, like Mike Ditka and Roman Gabriel, expedited the merger agreement between the two leagues in June 1966.[11] An improved contract offer from the 49ers moved Brodie to stay put in San Francisco, however, and a multi-year deal paying Brodie $900,000 over several seasons was instead inked.[8][12][13][14]

I didn’t mean it as an insult.  I could have chosen a more complimentary description.

Gore was a great player who had a very successful career. His longevity was amazing, especially when you consider he torn both his ACL’s while he was still at Miami U. He shouldn’t be faulted for playing as long as he did. My point is that he’s not one of the all time “greats”, but his productivity and lengthy career will likely earn him a HOF spot.

Plunkett was great in college. The Patriots stunk when he joined them and he got hammered.

By the time he was with Oakland he was a shell of his former self but did a good job.

He had a really good arm in college.  By the end not too good.

It was a shame he got drafted by the Pats.
