Title: Zombies
Post by: Dos Equis on October 03, 2023, 02:09:53 PM
Democrats rarely break ranks.  Bunch of zombies.  Pretty stupid thing for the handful of Republicans to do.  All it does is create chaos.  Every single Democrat voted in favor.  Why?  "Let them wallow in their pigsty of incompetence," Representative Pramila Jayapal told reporters before the vote.

Both of these parties suck.

US House ousts Kevin McCarthy as leader in historic vote
By Moira Warburton and Richard Cowan
October 3, 2023

WASHINGTON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives voted on Tuesday to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his job, as infighting among his fellow Republicans plunged Congress into further chaos just days after it narrowly averted a government shutdown.

The 216 to 210 vote marked the first time in history that the House removed its leader, driven by a relatively small group of right-wing Republicans. No clear successor has emerged.

The rebellion was led by Representative Matt Gaetz, a far-right Republican from Florida and McCarthy antagonist who accused the party leader of not doing enough to cut federal spending.

It was the latest moment of high drama in a year that has seen the Republican-controlled House bring Washington to the brink of default and the edge of a partial government shutdown.

McCarthy's party controls the chamber by a narrow 221-212 majority, meaning that it can afford to lose no more than five votes if Democrats unite in opposition.

That happened on Tuesday, as eight Republicans voted with 208 Democrats to remove McCarthy from his post.

In debate on the House floor, Gaetz and a handful of allies criticized McCarthy for relying on Democratic votes to pass temporary funding that headed off a partial government shutdown.

"We need a speaker who will fight for something - anything - other than staying on as speaker," said Republican Representative Bob Good.

McCarthy's supporters, including some of the chamber's most vocal conservatives, said he had successfully limited spending and advanced other conservative priorities even though Democrats control the White House and the Senate. They warned their gains would be at risk if they removed their leader.

"Think long and hard before you plunge us into chaos, because that's where we're headed," said Republican Representative Tom Cole.

Democrats said they would not help Republicans resolve their own problems. They broadly view McCarthy as untrustworthy after he broke an agreement on spending with Democratic President Joe Biden, and are angered by his decision to green-light an impeachment investigation of the president.

"Let them wallow in their pigsty of incompetence," Representative Pramila Jayapal told reporters before the vote.

Gaetz was one of more than a dozen Republicans who repeatedly voted against McCarthy's bid for speaker in January. McCarthy ultimately secured the gavel after 15 rounds of voting. In order to win the job, McCarthy agreed to rules that made it easier to challenge his leadership.

McCarthy supporters have said Gaetz was motivated by a hunger for publicity, a chance to win higher office, or resentment over an ongoing ethics probe into possible sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. Representative Garret Graves pointed out that he has been fundraising off his effort to oust McCarthy. "It's disgusting," he said.

Gaetz, who has denied wrongdoing and said he is not motivated by a dislike of McCarthy.

"This isn't a critique of the individual -- it's a critique of the job. The job hasn't been done," he said.

This lead from the New York Times:

"Hard-right rebels have succeeded in their drive to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy. He is out in a 216 to 210 vote. Eight Republicans voted to dethrone him. The House has no speaker."

https://www.nytimes.com/live/2023/10/03/us/mccarthy-gaetz-speaker-news#:~:text=Hard%2Dright%20rebels%20have%20succeeded,Republicans%20voted%20to%20dethrone%20him.

So he was ousted by 8 Republicans, but not 208 Democrats?

I agree.  I think he's done.  He got his two years in as Speaker.  He's in the history books.  Why stay in this kind of environment?  He'll probably cite some desire to spend time with his family and then go make money as a pundit like most of them do.

Crime rates in D.C. according to the D.C. Crime Cards: https://crimecards.dc.gov (https://crimecards.dc.gov)

Note the accurate crime rates are difficult to obtain because not all crimes are reported, so no matter whose statistics you choose, left leaning or right, they may be off. And there is a good chance they were manufactured to prove whatever point the reporter(s) are attempting to make.

Well, are they right?

They are out of context.  The larger issue is groupthink by leftwing talking heads.  They are just incapable of independent thinking.

The facts according to the White House:

FACT: Yes, D.C. Crime Is Out of Control
The White House
August 11, 2025

Washington, D.C. should be a symbol of pride and patriotism for the American people — and a safe location for tourists, residents, and public servants. Unfortunately, while Fake News journalists and politicians go out of their way to claim otherwise, the reality is that our nation’s capital is anything but safe.

Here are the facts:

In 2024, Washington, D.C. saw a homicide rate of 27.3 per 100,000 residents.

That was the fourth-highest homicide rate in the country — nearly six times higher than New York City and also higher than Atlanta, Chicago, and Compton.

If Washington, D.C. was a state, it would have the highest homicide rate of any state in the nation.

In 2012, the homicide rate in Washington, D.C. was just 13.9 per 100,000 residents.

Washington, D.C.’s murder rate is roughly three times higher than that of Islamabad, Pakistan, and 18 times higher than that of communist-run Havana, Cuba.

The number of juveniles arrested in Washington, D.C., has gone up each year since 2020 — many of whom have had prior arrests for violent crimes.

There were 29,348 crimes reported in Washington, D.C. last year, including 3,469 violent offenses, 1,026 assaults with a dangerous weapon, 2,113 robberies, and 5,139 motor vehicle thefts.

So far in 2025, there have already been nearly 1,600 violent crimes and nearly 16,000 total crimes reported in Washington, D.C.

There have been nearly 100 homicides, including the fatal shootings of innocent civilians like three-year-old Honesty Cheadle and 21-year-old Capitol Hill intern Eric Tarpinian-Jachym.

Vehicle theft in Washington, D.C. is more than three times the national average — ranking it among the most dangerous cities in the world.

Carjackings increased 547% between 2018 and 2023.

In 2024, there were triple the number of carjackings compared to 2018.

These statistics are not only troubling on their own, but they also likely significantly understate the level of crime in Washington, D.C.

Metro Police Department leadership are allegedly cooking the books to make crime statistics appear more favorable.

Many residents don’t feel safe reporting crime.

More than half of all violent crime in the U.S. goes unreported in the first place.

WUSA-TV: “D.C. residents voice frustration over rising violence, questioning police stats and demanding real action to make neighborhoods feel safe again.”

The Washington D.C. national guard has 2,700 personnel. This is the only national guard unit that reports directly to the President. In 2024 D.C. had a population of 702,250. The Oregon National Guard has approximately 8,000+ members. In 2024 Oregon had a population of 4.272 million. However, the population does not directly determine the size of the national guard. Many other factors are taken into consideration and Congress determines the structure and size of a State's national guard.

While the violent crime rate may be high in Washington D.C. It is not the highest in the nation and DC Crime Cards, https://crimecards.dc.gov (https://crimecards.dc.gov) clearly shows during the same time period in 2024 it has decreased 2025 by 550 reported violent crimes, and 1,217 crimes overall. Trump claims crime in D.C. is out of control. If that is so, why has it gone down instead of up or stayed constant?

For me, the good news is that in Portland OR, violent crime (homicides)are down 51% this year. And, West Linn, OR is consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in Oregon. Moreover, Hidden Springs, the neighborhood I live in is the #1 safest areas in the city of West Linn.

U.S. cities with the highest crime rates in 2025.

Memphis, TN:

St. Louis, MO:

Detroit, MI:
.

Baltimore, MD:

Oakland, CA:

The two links I provided do not say that DC has the highest crime rate.  But way to put lipstick on a pig.

Right, the links you provided did not say D.C. had the highest crime rate for a city (in the U.S.). I said they were not the highest with good reason. It is important to keep this issue in perspective because IMO, Trump is overstating the problem and over-reacting to it as well.

While Trump may not have used those specific words what he did post on Truth Social suggests that it is a bigger problem than it is. Trump posted, “It has become one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the World. It will soon be one of the safest!!!” Trump said in a Saturday Truth Social post, pledging action that will “essentially, stop violent crime in Washington, D.C.” He neglected to mention the violent crime in D.C. decreased in 2024 and 2025 and that it is less than a third of what it was in the '90's.

Obviously, no level of crime is good, which is why I choose to live where crime is almost non-existent.

He's calling it exactly as it is.  Crime in DC is at a completely unacceptable level.

I read an interesting article on BBC and it said that the crime rate is down 7% year over year or something like that. But, it may be a fluke. I don’t necessary agree with deploying the national guard to the area as I think that will make it worse now,  but something needs to be done.

Why would any non government employee (not forced to live there) live in that shithole? DC has been a toilet my whole life.

Deploying the national guard will make things better because of less crime.  They did this a while back in New Orleans and it worked well.  People felt safe in the streets.  They need to do it again IMO.

In New Orleans, in response to a horrific event on New Years Day when Shamsud-Din Jabbar drove his truck into a crowd during the Bourbon Street Parade, killing 14 people and injuring somewhere around fifty other folks, the Louisiana governor, Jeff Landry mobilized 100 Guardsmen to work with local law enforcement and emergency services to protect residents and visitors until January 3, 2025.

On August 14, 2025, 800 Guardsmen were mobilized for an indefinite time period at the behest of Donald Trump in response to what he called a crime emergency in Washington D.C. Presently, 200 of them are on the streets of D.C. at any given time.

Are these two situations comparable? If so, in what ways are they alike? Also, in what ways are they completely different?

In addition to the National Guard there have presently been around 200 arrests by federal agents, and 75 arrests by ICE who are assisting metro police in the nation's capital. The Federal takeover in D.C. began last Monday.
