Denise has been struggling with severe bipolar disorder for more than two decades which made it extremely challenging for her to hold down a job and pay the bills - even while being medicated for this condition (which she voluntarily stopped in 2010). As a result, she has been forced into homelessness for more than a decade.
She is mostly remembered by fans and followers for her outstanding bodybuilding accomplishments back in the late 80s and early 90s.
She turned Pro at the 1993 NPC USA Championships and competed in that year’s Ms Olympia, shocking the bodybuilding world by placing second (ahead of 31 of the best international professionals in the sport) in her first and only attempt. In total, she managed to beat 75 other competitors across three contests that year.
However, within the Venice (California) community, she is just as equally remembered for her kindness and unselfishness towards the neighborhood kids. Through her ‘Big Sister’ program, Denise dedicated a lot of her time and money to ensure kids within, her and other, troubled neighborhoods were kept off the streets, out of trouble, and away from rampant gang violence. Aside from looking after them daily after school and on weekends, she also took them to theme parks, wrestling shows, and states as far away as Hawaii (while traveling for her contests, seminars, and guest posing invitations) which allowed the kids to see and experience many new things. And, most notably, her ‘Big Sister’ program was entirely self-funded (which is all the more impressive considering she was never officially sponsored or offered a contract, not even after her outstanding achievements in 1993).
Sadly, Denise has suffered from several bouts of mania and, as a consequence, homelessness since her sudden departure from the sport back in 1994, both of which continue to this day. She is still homeless in Fort Worth but has been able to make do with the help of night shelters and outreach groups.
Recently, her mother and a few of her old friends decided to raise some money to help with food and clothing (which, being homeless, don’t last very long given the damage caused by being outdoors most of the time). So far, 5 people have contributed. One of Denise’s friends took it upon themselves to deliver all the donations (food, clothing, and money) every week while paying out of pocket for gas and a hot meal which they normally take to her during each visit.
Her plight is clearly complicated which simply makes the task of estimating a donation target all the more difficult. For now, the main objective is to ensure Denise’s basic needs (food and clothing) are, and continue to be, met and any additional donations will be used to help Denise get back on her feet (accommodation and medical treatment - if and when she agrees to receive treatment again). All donations will be received and handled on Denise’s behalf by her mother: Sandra Rutkowski.

I was just going to comment on this. She refused, multiple times, to accept any kind of money. Eventually I just left some cash on the sidewalk and told her she could take it, leave it, throw it away, whatever she wanted to do with it.
She looked at it like it was some type of alien life form. Like why the fuck is a stranger giving me green paper.
As a result I got the impression that drugs aren't her problem. Definitely mental illness. I've never known a drug addict to turn away from cash.
IF, and that's a big IF, but IF this gofundme is legit I doubt Denise would accept the money. I have no idea what you could use the money for to help her. She seemed like she's perfectly happy living on the streets. She basically said as much. (Though she did try to snatch my cell phone at one point to call 911)

She needs mental health and drug/alcohol treatment. In-patient in a secured facility. She chooses not to get that help because it would restrict her freedom and our system is so fucked up they let that happen (then make excuses always pretending there's not enough resources/beds/money).
Her plight is sad, but it is repeated 1000s of times a day across the country. Even if this was her mother (which I doubt), the fact is she is talking about giving money, food and clothes, but nothing to actually try to resolve a decades long problem. That's not real compassion in my opinion. Forced treatment is the real compassion.
Mike, this is absolutely no slight on you, you are a good dude, trying to do something good, and I applaud you for it. Hang in there.

Sorry to hear this Michael. Take care of yourself before anyone else no matter their situation.
As for Denise and the gofundme pitch? I don't trust any of these online mass pleas for money as they are governed more often not by reason or need but by greed and playing on the memories and good will of others. If someone wishes to help they had best research any such ploy to the fullest.

If ever you get people demanding money you dont have just tell them "you will get it when I get it"
Never refuse to pay, just tell them you will pay what you can afford.
As long as you pay even a very small amount they cannot send baliffs or debt collectors

Someone asked in the comments of that video why the mother won't take her in, and apparently to boils down to what Raymondo said. The mother offered her a place to stay, and Denise took her up on it for a bit, but the mother can't handle her when she gets manic. It's a little bit delicately worded, so I'm guessing she might get violent. Beakdoctor's interaction with her suggests this too.
Denise is 61, so the mother's got to be late 70's at least, anyone else is probably 50's-70's too. That being said, I can't see this GoFundMe helping much aside from getting her food and maybe short stay motels every once and a while. She really needs some sort of structured, supervised care.

Amazing how if you cross the border illegally and make it to NYC they will put you up in luxury hotel like the Hotel Roosevelt. Give you monthly spending money, free health care, free cell phone and food stamps (SNAP). Here we have a mentally ill American living in the streets getting little. Since it's California I wonder if she gets a some support like the homeless in San Francisco? The homeless love it there. They get about $800 a month and a free cell phone that even has streaming movies.

This is why I thought it was a type of scam; her family didn’t need money to buy her shoes, if anything they need funds to have her committed. It’s sad horrific situation but the people collecting the money aren’t in the best state of mind of how to disburse these funds.

Old school bodybuilders really are sad cases though. They got used by the Weider's etc to make millions with barely any money in return for ruining their long term health/the women being around sketchy people. That was when the bodybuilding business was actually generating huge money.

Unfortunately I can offer some perspective, my brother now lives a semi normal life in a hostel that I fund, but only after the state finally stepped in and took responsibility for him. He's now on what she needs a medical order where the only way he can live in the community is under a supervised medical order where they have to take anti psychotic medication. This medication as crude as it might sounds turns off the noise in their heads that we all see them battling with when we walk past people talking to themselves etc, there are so many people who would benefit from type of order but unfortunately in a complex world it takes a long time to get to this point and most usually die prior from drug overdose suicide or other illness related to their mental illness.
Hopefully she can get the right help.

Yes, this is where our mental health/addiction system fails miserably. It's amazing what medical/social worker system does now allowing addicts to choose to keep taking drugs under some lunatic ideology of honoring patient choice or dignity. They end up with the compassion of the streets and their own illness. The solutions are all there out in the open, recommended by true MH and addiction professionals and obvious, but homeless and other phony money grubbing "advocates" block the obvious remedies.
Dr. Drew talks a lot about this.
Heck, Hanky probably has a lot to say on this issue also as he's probably familiar with the system in his state due to his wife. Everyone inside the system with a brain knows what needs to happen and it isn't the "more money" they're always saying is the problem.

Do you guys really not know why her family doesn't help? It's a common story here. Drugs/alcohol/mental illness push families to the end of their ropes, sometimes to the point of just having to say "no more" because the addict/mentally ill person keeps fucking their own life up after many many many chances. Someone asked on Youtube. The mom had taken in Denise before, but can't handle her when she goes manic from the sickness and whatever else is happening. Denise is 61, so the mom has to be late 70's, and everyone else close to her has to 50's - 70's most likely, so it's understandable why they can't handle her.

Amazing how if you cross the border illegally and make it to NYC they will put you up in luxury hotel like the Hotel Roosevelt. Give you monthly spending money, free health care, free cell phone and food stamps (SNAP). Here we have a mentally ill American living in the streets getting little. Since it's California I wonder if she gets a some support like the homeless in San Francisco? The homeless love it there. They get about $800 a month and a free cell phone that even has streaming movies.

There was a homeless guy who was common in an area i lived in Houston, pretty much harmless but would yell at people sometimes. He was schizophrenic.
Was always wearing a bunch of winter clothing even in the hot summers.
Didn't drink or do drugs, just didn't have his head on straight.
Randomly at a HOA meeting i heard a lady talking about him, she was his sister. She stayed in the area for 30 years just to take care of him, but he would never accept care for more than 2-3 days and he'd freak out and leave. Refused to be medicated, technically you can't force meds into their system without some sort of decree.
She said once a month she would pick him up, clean him and let him sleep in a tent in her backyard, he could not stand being inside and would go bat shit crazy.
The point is that he didn't want to accept anything, deep down he would have a moment of clarity, but soon after would flip out and disappear.
I feel bad for these people, it must be torture not being able to control your own thoughts and impulses.

My youngest brother got hooked on meth and so I had him arrested. Then I had him committed to a hospital to get cleaned up and straightened out. It worked for a short time as he got his life together and got his job back and then he took his own life. But harmed no one else in doing so.

When I saw her 3 months ago she had a buzz cut. In one of the 'update' videos they showed a picture of her with long hair. There's no way her hair grew that much but it may have just been intended as a montage and not an actual update on her current condition.

The only thing keeping her on the streets and not in a mental hospital is herself, sadly. It's very fucked up that the system the libs created and maintain places that choice with a mentally ill addict. I'm sure she's been in, but then left more times than you could count. Small update - The people helping the mother run this are trying to get her to take Denise in with her, her mom doesn't want that, at least right now. She's scared she can't control her.
I get this. Despite being her mom, if Denise is prone to bouts of mania and/or violent outbursts, well, screw that.
No one should deep-six her own safety and sanctuary to aid someone so unpredictable.
It’s terrible to think, because she is her mother, but it’s reality.
