Title: RIP Virgil
Post by: Thin Lizzy on February 28, 2024, 12:15:47 PM
Had an impressive physique back in the day. Essentially the Big Lou of wrestling shamelessly working the conventions to sell 8x10s for $20.

I met him in jersey at chiller theatre show years ago. he staRTED TO TALK TO ME OUT OF THE BLUE SAID i REMINDED HIM OF PUTSKI. I told him I had to go ,I guess he was bored as no one was really bothering with him much. Louie ferrigno and billy graham were also in the room where they hid virgil in the corner. Ferrigno actually got excited when graham came into the room.

The guy was sad for a lot of years. He'd show up to flea markets, gym openings, comic shows, etc...., and just spend the day trying to get you to buy an autograph. He even had a move where he'd sign it to your girl, kid, etc.... without asking, and then guilt you into buying it :).

One of the funnier things that happened, was he'd advertise as "Ted DiBiasie and Virgil", and sell it as a package deal, and then he'd just say Ted couldn't make it. Well, word gets back to Ted, and he gives Virgil shit about it, but Virgil couldn't afford a new banner, so he'd roll up  or find a way to cover the DiBiasi part -

RIP. Didn't hear much about it, but apparently he had cancer and a bunch of health problems the last few years.

i'm sorry he got sick and died, but he had to have been the most useless "superstar" in wrestling history

his whole career was just standing silent next to an actual wrestler, and he somehow made a 10 year career out of that, it's probably hard to tolerate a regular job after that easy gig so that's why he kept trying to get people to buy his autograph

whose bright idea was it to make him a member of the nwo?  that was when you knew the gimmick ran its course

He lied about his age (he was actually about 11 years older than his wrestling age), and started wrestling late, and never had a real job outside of those wrestling years, and a few odd appearances here and there. I'd be shocked if his total earnings were high. This article has a run down of the last few years -

He was looking rough a few months ago -

Not his first GoFundMe either, years ago, he was asking fans to to give him "fuck money" Robby Robinson style -

.

It wasn't all bad news for the guy though, he apparently had a monster hog, and would blow himself for the amusement of groupies and other wrestlers sometimes. So God gives, God takes, I guess :).

I don't think he would have made much coin in WWF(E) then.  He wasn't a wrestler per se... more like an accessory.  Probably paid the same as Miss Elizabeth.

I was in New Orleans for WM 30 walking one night and literally bumped into Virgil as he was trying to walk into the liquor store, I exclaimed, “it’s Virgil in a NWO shirt!” and he nodded and rushed into the store.

The guys I was with just started laughing because Virgil either big timed us or he thought we were going to jump him. It was a once in a lifetime experience.

Making six figures for a few years typically doesn’t set a person up for life.

One thing can be said is at least he tried to get out there and hustle for some money.  Can't fault him for that.

For boomers it was easier. Wrestlers were on the road year round so didn't need to run a household. Shame they were so dumb as they could have brought loads of cheap rental properties in those days. In the UK, houses were probably about 5-10k in the 80s, and they're around 250k-750k now.

He must have been making good money in the 80s and then dubya-see-dubya was paying over the odds to ex-WWF guys in the early to mid-90s.

Setting up autograph tables in the subway isn’t exactly the definition of hustling.

My friend is friends with a Virgil who lives in my city. He's also Black. Apparently, he had owed some money or caused trouble in some other circles, so he was called "N***** Virgil" by someone he was on bad terms with.

I think racial epithets are loathsome. So I then started referring to him as "NV".

I was not familiar with the NV in the OP. He looked pretty young, or at least...not old.

May he RIP.

True.  Sort of.  What other skills did he have?  He was clinging to past glory (for what it was to him) and doing what he could to get a dollar.

When you think about it, there are very few wrestlers that have ended their run - by retirement or lack of prospects - and have a nest egg set up.

I believe he had a Mathematics degree and taught for a while after he stopped wrestling.
