Title: Studio 54
Post by: LurkerNoMore on March 07, 2024, 08:30:25 AM
Just watched this on Netflix.  Was a good/decent documentary.   Before my time though.

How many of you old timers actually went there and got in?

I was there one night in the mid 80s (work related).  I think by then, Studio 54 was just another club in Manhattan.  I remember there being more punk rockers there than 70s/disco types.  Weird hair and piercings.....much like the average grade school kid these days.   ;D

Heard a story from my uncle of my grandfather being there in the 70’s and someone offering him cocaine and he sneezed and blew the pile away. Not sure if true or not.

I was there 1977 and got in while Frank Sinatra and Warren Beatty DIDN'T! :D

They had a real tough bouncer at that time who didn't let anyone in. I was lucky, they weren't.

Was also there final night in 1980 and took Sylvester Stallone's drink.

Just kidding

The place was a scam in that they kept people out to give the appearances of an incredible disco inside. It made a big line outside of the place. True if you look at the celebrities that went there it was the most famous on earth. Stallone, Travolta, Mick Jagger, Diana Ross, Cher and many, many more. The owner was a gay coke head who would let only the weirdest people, guys he liked and hot women in.  I never tried to get in when during that time when hot dance clubs were everywhere.

From the doc, it was an everything kind of club.  Most gay activities took place in the secret basement room.

This is true.  That is exactly how the documentary portrayed it.

I wouldn't know about that, but that film has a brutal fisting scene in it that took me by surprise - that whole nightclub scene was riddled with HIV

You've been warned ;D

The 1998 movie "54" was very good [IMO]. I recommend it.

Does anyone have an opinion on which Studio 54 documentary is the BEST one?

?

I'm sure some are better than others. IIRC, in one that I thought was very good, a woman [former Studio 54 clubgoer] said that at 54, you could have a plumber dancing next to a supermodel [I assumed that was because the plumber was probably himself on par with a model, looks-wise].

I assume it is because the plumber's dick shelf is on display.

Post Studio 54 saw the Club Kid craze going wild.  The movie Party Monster with the Home Alone star is about that.  It's wild to watch it.  There is a book written by James St. James that the movie was based on (Bloodbath at the Disco, but later changed to Party Monster) and the book is even better.   It's about the horrible and gruesome murder of the drug dealer Angel.  Which when you start reading the book you automatically picture the killers as bad guys.   It takes a while before the murder happens (about 3/4th of the way through) and despite being rarely mentioned, when the victim enters the spotlight you immediately despise him.
He gets beaten with a hammer, injected with Drano, has Drano poured down his throat, strangled and smothered over a long course of time.  (About 3 hours if I recall).  Yet, you really don't care.   :D
