I keep seeing collagen peptides at Costco. Is this the newest supplement gimmick?
How are these different than protein? I thought peptides were injected, or were at least hormone based?Does anyone use these , if so what are the benefits?
-
Isn't this what the LBAs over on ProMuscle were? They were the rage for a long time. Then the original guy sold the company and then that guy took over and a short while later the first guy (or someone close to him) released the actual recipe to make your own. After that I think he ran into some problems with the FDA and getting approved/certified since it was considered a "food" product.
Someone on here may know more about that situation.

It's not new.
Can't hurt.
Cheap enough to take 10g a day, I get mine from Microingredients.
-
It's about 50% glycine and not a complete protein due to the lack of tryptofan. There was a case way back where there was a diet where all protein was collagen, and people died perhaps due to it being so inferior a source of EAAs.
The theory is that these short peptides get absorbed intact and can therefore be good for joints etc. Proline and hydroxyproline is one amino thought to have biological effects because it's so abundant in collagen.
You can obviously also buy casein and whey peptides. They are absorbed faster and iirc even faster that free form aminos.
I like the casein Peptopro. Collagen and these other proteins are acid treated to form peptides, regular collagen is poorly absorbed, this is hydrolyzed forming fast absorbing peptide chains.
I would only use it to supplement other proteins, by itself it's horrible.

Is it decently priced?

Is it decently priced?
If you buy from a bulk supplier. The fancy labeled ones can be very expensiive, otherwise it's very cheap. Maybe worth it to check which manufacturer supplies the bulk seller if they are open to disclosing it, not all are.

I like mircoringredients a lot.
They have an amazon store, and routinely have sales on their home site + amazon for 10-20% off.
I buy electrolyte powder, l-theanine, coq10, krill oil, k2+mk7, collagen, lion's mane, and creatine from them, and they are my go-to when I just want to try shit like tongkat and stuff.
I find them very cost effective, even when compared to places with good prices like Costco.

Hey Arnold, have you seen these collegen peptides?
-
These are good for connective tissues but poor for building muscle.

Am fully aware most of this stuff could do jack shit.

its like hand cream, women put handcream on 3 times a day for 50 years, there skin is no better than mine who has never put any on in my life
Same with hair products, all it does is coat your hair, hair is dead tissue

Some of the science behind certain things does make sense to me. If it's not causing me any financial concern, and the downside is negligent, why the fuck not?

Remember Steve Reeves and his hyping of collagen? I think it's been around since early 20th century.

If they are third party analyzed it would be a plus. Many of these herbs are just sawdust. In the US I would only buy from nootropicsdepot or buy the patented extracts with good feedback.

Which specific brand of hand cream are you talking about?
Also can you provide a photo of your hand and the hand of the woman you’re referring to? The visual evidence would help.
Thanks !

Eggs and meat contain all essential amino acids.
Nothing proven about whether collagen peptides do anything but they might.
Some people say it works and it might but it could also be placebo.
https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-1606/collagen-peptides
Steroids work. Take steroids and peptides and you'll get results along with a lighter wallet. Just take the steroids without the peptides and you'll get probably the same results.
To get more collagen in your diet (not peptides) eat the cartilage and bones (if soft enough) of animals.
For example, when you eat a chicken drumstick, eat the cartilage too.

Remember Steve Reeves and his hyping of collagen? I think it's been around since early 20th century.
Reeves ate gelatin powder mixed up in juice. Like Knox. Like Jello.
It was made from animal hooves then. Maybe still is.
My grandfather would never eat Jello because of where it came from.
He also would never eat hot dogs or mince meat for the same reason.

Yes I forgot what it was called when you buy it in the grocery store for baking. I think Reeves credited it for recovering his stomach? I think one of the first supplements for bodybuiilders were liver pills, would eat 300 of them. Carnivores say liver is like nature's multivitamin.
My mom is the same, can't eat sausage if there is one ingredient which not in all sausages. Can't eat meat if it's prepared by someone else because she has to take away all the fat. I think collagen comes from beef skins. Disgusting to think about.

Back in the day they sold liquid Collagen which was then called "Liquid Pre-Digested Protein"....sold in a plastic bottle that you would squeeze like a shampoo bottle and it was gel like.....it sucked and isn`t a complete protein lacking many essential Amino Acids.
I have no knowledge about any Peptides, but I`d pass and eat a steak and eggs breakfast any day over some BS snake oil touted as a new miracle supplement.

It comes from ligaments and tendons, and is not a complete protein......aka "connective tissue".

Ok going way back to the time when research mattered. Collagen is the big difference between compounds. Some compounds increase collagen synthesis while others reduce it. This was actually a really important point during my research about 20 years ago that no one seemed to keep up on. Like all the other shit gets reprinted a million times and the research on that I can't find anywhere now. That is why some compounds are more likely to lead to injury. This is another reason to stack compounds. This is really important when we start talking about ligaments and tendons and injuries.
Specifically if I recall testosterone was actually bad for collagen and some other compounds like Deca were good for it there was also a difference in the quality of the collagen with some producing more cross fibers and stronger collagen or some shit. There was some really good research on the subject back in the day I can't find now.
But the jest of it was you are creating larger but weaker bonds with some compounds and should therefore mix compounds and train within a safety range below maximum effort as your muscle strength may outpace your ligaments and tendons
"Anabolic steroids can affect collagen synthesis by increasing the production of collagen but also by disrupting the balance between collagen synthesis and breakdown. This can lead to a decrease in the quality of collagen produced and an increased risk of joint injury."

I had looked into it a while back and found this study showing improved nitrogen retention in women supplementing with collagen vs whey:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19465192/
Hardly conclusive but still deserving of further study, I’d say.
I can believe that we evolved to function best when consuming some collagen. Up until recently we made use of every part of an animal, right down to boiling the bones for stock. It’s only a recent thing where we strip out all the connective tissue, leaving only the “prime cuts” to eat.

100%.
This is why I find it impossible that consuming the anmimal in this way would be detrimental to health. Has to be the refined and processed stuff causing problems.
-

This may be a case where I don't understand the meaning of some words ??? ;D
"Bovine collagen is collagen that comes from beef and, specifically, cow hides. Once the beef has been used for food, collagen is extracted from the cow hides. Bovine collagen comes in many forms, including powders, tablets and liquids."
There is also fish and pork collagen sold.
To add to what bhanks said certain compounds increase the "wrong" type of collagen, less elasticity or whatever. I think the research is easy to find on pubmed. One early influence for me said his wife used trenbolone specifically for a calf tendon rupture after seeing some paper. Ironically stanozolol has been investigated as an arthritis treatment because of its effect on collagen, stano is the one where "everyone" complains of joint pain.
In bodybuilding diets some coaches have advocated dieting on ffish exclusively because it thins the skin, the collagen is a certain type.

I haven't seen anyone saying it was harmful or causing problems?
The stuff has to be "refined" or the gastric system can't break it down, this was what the internet told me a few weeks back ;D
I don't think either is harmful, maybe if some animal disease like mad cow disease was passed down :D
I've seen some say the hydrolyzed collagen absorbs poorly but that's not what 'incomplete protein' means. I haven't looked but my guess is that it's easy and fast to digest and absorb. But it's 50% the inessential amino glycine and very low on essential aminos and also with no tryptofan which is necesssary to a diet and even if there was some it has to be a certain amount, otherwise it becomes rate limiting for protein synthesis. Phil Hernon. claimed he ate almost exclusively collagen to win his pro card. What shit.
It's interesting I think how they come up with the "value" of protein and perfect dietary aminos needed. There's several different proteon value rating systems. Some intl bodies like WHO actually has optimal amounts needed per day per pound of all the individual 20 something aminos. Some say eggs are the top protein but what I read says it's pretty allergenic to many people. In some others I think whey comes out on top if it's counted as a food. Everything says whey is almost optimal for everything, all the research, but I think most here feel whey shakes made no difference for them, must be because they are getting enough anyway. All the research says more is better basically for muscle gain but that's not what getbiggers think, all they get is farts.
-
Complete proteins contain all essential amino acids.
The essential amino acids allow other non-essential (but useful) amino acids to be synthesized by the body.
Meat, eggs, fish, dairy (whey is a dairy food), ie. animal proteins are complete proteins.

I had no idea that they used the skins/hides Van.

You guys are missing the point it’s not about the collagen you eat but the collagen your produce that matters test lowers collagen production too much test is a recipe for disaster your ligaments and tendons need other compounds

You've never seen doctors, nutritionists or so called "health experts" saying red meat and animal fat consumption causes cancer, high cholesterol, and a myriad of other ailments?
