Title: Glucagon
Post by: Arnold Palmer on May 03, 2006, 01:06:45 PM
Ive been trying to find information on Glucagon supplementation, but cant find any good info.  Does anyone know why people don't inject glucagon for weight loss.  It seems like it would be very effective.

Ive been trying to find information on Glucagon supplementation, but cant find any good info.  Does anyone know why people don't inject glucagon for weight loss.  It seems like it would be very effective.

Definition: a hormone secreted by the pancreas; stimulates increases in blood sugar levels in the blood (thus opposing the action of insulin)

Why would you want to supplement with that stuff?  I wouldn't mess with this.  During a tough and long workout, when your blood and muscle sugar levels are low, Glucagon is released by the pancreas to increase blood sugar.  Where do you think it gets the blood sugar from if your muscle sugar stores are already low?  Your muscle tissue.  It breaks down muscle protein to extract the Glutamine, move the Glutamine to the liver where it's converted to blood sugar and released into your blood stream.  In other words, your muscles get smaller.

Glucagon does convert stored fat into energy too, which is probably why you wonder why people don't use this for fat loss.  But the human body will break down muscle tissue before it breaks down stored fat.  Maintaining big muscles is not a priority to the human body.

You should try to keep your pancreas from releasing Glucagon as much as possible.  This is why it is a good idea to keep your workouts short, then have a post workout meal that includes protein and sugar.  The sugar makes the pancreas release insulin, thus stopping Glucagon.  The pancreas cannot release both hormones at the same time.

it is very dangerous to mess around with.  Even the glucagon packs they make for diabetics aren't used much, unless its an emergency.  Some good resources to use are:
The Diabetes Problem Solver and Modern Nutrition in Health and Disease.  They cover a lot on this topic and many others.
