Title: Fight fans! Canelo v Crawford, who ya got?
Post by: Wiggs on September 09, 2025, 04:39:07 PM
This Saturday night on Netflix, a battle royale!

I'm going Crawford by decision or a draw! I like and respect Canelo and understand the weight jump and all it entails. That said, Bud Crawford is on the Mayweather and Ray Leonard level. He's an incredible fighter.

Canelo has been on a long slow slide for a long time now. Yes he's still winning,  he's beating mostly undefeated top ten guys but his past half dozen fights have been handpicked.  He hasn't looked really impressive in years. He can't go a hard 12 rounds anymore. He has to carefully pace himself and he seems to have lost his power.

Bud is fairly jacked too. I have long suspected that almost ALL of the top boxers are on PEDs including Bud, so I don't think the weight is going to be a problem. But Bud has slipped a little too. He just hasn't been super active and has really wasted his best years by fighting once per year. Im a huge fan of Crawford but his last few years have been frustrating.

Lb 4 lb Bud is better. They are both past their best but my guess is Bud has more left in the tank and, if scored fairly, should win a decision over Canelo.

Good post Doc. Why do you think Canelo has been ducking David Beneviedes? Is David too big? A weight bully? Too much risk, too little reward?

I know you asked Beak but I'll chime in and say Canelo probably isn't afraid of David it's a stubborn thing.  Meaning nobody is going to tell him what to do.  Just my opinion.  As for the fight this weekend?  I have to go Bud.  I am curious to see the weigh ins.  If Crawford is too heavy, I might change my pick.  Either way, I think Canelo is really going to be up for this one.  Damn, now I'm having second thoughts.  Bud was my favorite fighter but after he got his fight with Spence, I've been very disappointed in him putting everyone on ice.  I actually will be rooting for Canelo.

Your contributions are appreciated Abe. I agree, Canelo is definitely not afraid. At the same time, he's definitely avoiding him. I also agree with you that Canelo will be up for this one. He knows Bud is very talented and a legit threat, so he's going to have to put in some serious work. I don't see either of them knocking each other out. Canelo is too tough and Bud is too slick. If it happens, it's a flash knockout by Bud or Bud made a serious mistake taking a chance and got caught. Bud's not like Mayweather in that he takes punches.  Canelonis the wrong guy to gamble with. Anyway, I think it will be a good fight and boxing purists will enjoy it and the casual fan will get some moments of excitement as well.

I didn't see a point in Bud fighting Boots. Boots isn't on his level yet. Madrimov is much better than given credit for and I didn't expect Bud to knock him out. That was a chess match and a game of patience. I can't see any other legit fights for Bud after this one.  If Canelo wins,  he should fight Beneviedes.

I don't know why he's ducking Benavides. Benavides reputation as the boogie man is a little exaggerated.  Benavides is good but I haven't seen anything from him that would've given Canelo too much trouble, at least the Canelo of a few years ago.

Canelo has definitely slipped. Its not that he's old but he has a lot of mileage. 70ish fights is a lot. And the last decades plus has been a fairly busy schedule of championship level fights.

But whatever the reason is, NOT fighting Benavides is not a good look. It appears to the average fan that he's ducking Benny, and the logical conclusion is because Canelo and his team know exactly how much he's slipped and he's not sure he can take the heat. It probably won't hurt his legacy but right now it looks bad for Canelo. If Benny goes on to achieve greatness it will definitely look like Canelo was affraid of losing to him. But if Benny ends up being a footnote, he'll fade from everyone's memory.

That retard Berlanga just got obliterated by a guy who's not on Benavides level. Hamza is good but Berlanga went the full distance with Canelo. Munguia, Scull, all these guys are good but they were fairly safe bets, hand picked and those fights mostly stunk.

Madrimov is good and he gave Bud a very close fight. Part of that is Madrimov's skill but part of it was the move up in weight. Bud had ko'd something like 15 people in a row. Wasn't that Bud's 4th division? Now a jump all the way to supermiddle? My guess is Bud sees a weakness in Canelo. He's ready to be taken out and he's gambling with the weight but figures he might as well be the one to beat Canelo before someone else does.

I think Canelo should have fought Benavidez a few years ago while Canelo looked to be peaked.  But, if Canelo wins Saturday, he could tell David come get it now.  It will be very hard for Benavidez to make 168 again and could level the playing field.  I agree Beak, they see something in Canelo but so far only Mayweather against a baby Canelo, GGG and Bivol have been able to do anything with him.  Actually can't wait.  Boxing has been going down the shitter for better than 10 years now.  This fight needs to deliver.

Agree. A lot of these guys fight once a year, if that. Most pros are done after 30, 35 fights. Many guys are now fighting for world titles after only 10 or 15 fights. They collect as many tittles as they can and retire. A lot of them are blowing their prime years. Afraid to lose their "0". Shakur, keyshawn and Bruce Carrington are supposed to be the future of the US scene. Ugh. There's some good fighters out there Floyd Schofield and Brian Norman are good but I can't stand Norman's attitude.  There's a lot of good boxers coming out of Cuba - turning pro, Asia, especially Japan and all the Kazakh, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Russian fighters but you rarely see them on TV.

I fear this fight is going to be a dud though. Hope I'm wrong. I don't see either one being able to execute their game plan on each other.

both great fighters , Canello has a granite chin, not seen enough of Crawford to tell if he has.

It may come down to that .

Bud is 38 later this month.  He’s well-preserved but doesn’t have the experience that Canelo has.

I don’t know what if any weight-gain clauses are in effect, so Canelo might come in at 180+.

Rooting for Bud, but I am picking Canelo by UD.

I'm not a fan of canelo anymore. feel he has been spoon fed. That being said I think he is too naturally big. I think he stops crawford in 7.

I'm thinking more along these lines, too. Crawford has that old-school grit and determination to go with his elite skills, but Canelo is a juiced-up veteran who's been in with some huge guys. He will have some amazing designer PEDs in his system along with the judges on his side.

A lot of what Crawford brings will be nullified by Canelo's power, and he will either get stopped in the later rounds or be forced to box safe just to survive.  That said, I'd love for Crawford to pull off a Mayweather-style masterclass.

I have no doubt that Bud will be- if he already hasn't- on the best of designer PEDs. He used to have a soft physique at 140 but as he's gone up in weight, while approaching 40 years old, he's gotten more muscular and hasn't lost speed or reflexes?

They are all on PEDs. They all have their systems for beating WADA/VADA. I remember Spence had veritable bitch tits about 6 or 7 years ago. There's way too much money and future revenue riding on the line.

And with millions riding on the fight and you know your opponent is juiced up. Of course you're going to hire a "trainer" to figure it out.

Loved Jackson. Watched everything I could find of him as a kid. I loved how he would spark a guy out and then direct his falling body to the canvas as he fell, haha.

Yeah, true. I'm just a tad biased, I guess. Canelo always pissed me off, even though I have to admire his career and his toughness. I've actually warmed to him a lot more through the years.

The official weigh has happened.

Canelo looks skinny. Crawford looks comfortable and fit.
There's no discernible size advantage for Canelo based on what they looked like at the weigh in.

Im leaning more and more toward a more dominant Crawford win.

Late career weight cuts don't really work out well. Several examples of guys going down in weight and just getting trounced. Maybe they overtrained? Maybe Canelo is overtrained?

I've said it before, he's slipped, maybe burnt out, fights like he's bored. But Canelo has always had very friendly judges. Even the Bivol fight- which was quite one sided- was scored really close, Bivol only won by a couple of points. LOL.

What does that mean exactly?

They weigh in how many hours before the fight?

It means that a boxer can gain as much weight as they can after the weigh-in.  Weigh-in is a day before the bout.

I picked Canelo to win but was happy to see Bud perform so well.  :)

I picked Bud to win. Mainly because Canelo has been fighting bored. He wasn't hungry for the knockout,  couldn't summon the energy to cut off the ring, didn't force the fight etc... he just fought very uninspired for a few years now, burnout.

My only hesitation was the weight and how it would affect Bud, but it turned out to be a non issue.

It didn't really live up to expectations, did it. Canelo looked powerful, and you could see his gameplan early on, but he just had no urgency. As you say, it was uninspired. Crawford boxed well but he was just a little too cautious, IMO. It wasn't quite the dominant boxing masterclass one would have hoped for. He could have taken more risks and put a bit of a beating on Canelo in those last few rounds.
