I'm not sure convicts care about the politics outside of prison walls?

Not saying it's the wrong punishment to be very clear, but it's kinda weird all teh lengths they are going to, to prevent him suiciding, so that they can eventually kill him.

He'll be fine. He's going into one of the protective housing units as soon as he's convicted. Kirk's murder isn't the type to upset convicts. A lot of Blacks didn't like Kirk because of his stance on Black crime. Latins, his stance on immigration. And the white gangs aren't all that race or faith based anymore. He'll get punked a bit, but nothing more.
There is a chance he kills himself, he doesn't look like the type that will take prison well.

What’s the weird part? That the guy is suicidal now that he’s dealing with the result of his actions?
People haven’t gotten over Epstein being an inside job, or Jack Ruby taking justice into his hands. The public wants “justice” and for this to go to trial.
What I think is weird is that a girl fled the Ukraine for safety and was murdered in the US on a bus while onlookers did nothing. Or that the guy who murdered her is still alive. No one felt compelled to that mentally deranged lowlife off the streets.
What I think is weird is the number of sexual predators and child molesters that walk amongst us but no one is taking justice into their own hands to end their lives.
What I think is weird is that this country lost their mind over the murder/death of George Floyd, who was driving while impaired, yet people are saddened over the death of Charlie Kirk because he said words that people disagreed with.
What I think is weird is pro choice people get upset when school shootings take place. Or a woman can terminate a pregnancy and it’s her right but if a reckless driver kills a pregnant woman in a car accident they can be charged with a double homicide.
I have several other ideas that I consider weird, but keeping the shooter alive so he can be put to death is more ironic than weird.

allright I'll grant ironic. I just see it as a oddity. Not my original thought, but a comedian once highlighted they swab the persons arm before lethal injection. - yeah wouldn't want them to get infected in their last 5 minnutes on earth... tha sort of thing. Don't get me wrong I believe in due process, presumption of innocence, right to fair trial, all of it, it's the cornerstone of civilised society, but it's still odd. certainly agree about the other points you raised for what it's worth

If he is sentenced to death he'll be in solitary confinement the whole time anyway.

Likely death penalty as the state he did it in has death penalty.
And since it was murder of a political figure with ideological motives it will be classified as terrorism. Which means penalty is more severe than regular first degree murder.
Also Trump says he wishes for that and he is the president so...
