Title: chest workout at almost age 69
Post by: judochoke on December 01, 2025, 12:21:29 PM
i have always been a good bencher pressor, 315 for reps in my 40s and 50s. But now at age 68.8, i have to be very careful. I know that one wrong move in either showing off, or doing something stupid, something will tear. I can just feel it. I have already partially torn my tricep belly a few years ago, and I never want to hear that sound again.

I start with a lot of warm up sets, i mean a lot.
135 for 4 sets of ten
155 for 2 sets of 6
175 for 2 sets of 6
225 for 2 sets of 6

This normally takes about 18-20 minutes, as i only rest for 90 seconds between sets

Then 245 for 2 sets of 6
And today for the first time in a while i hit 275 for 2 sets of 4, pausing the last rep on both sets.

Then finish off with 4 sets of 225 pause reps. And that’s it. But then, about 25-40 minutes have gone by, and im demolished. I finish off with some lights set of tricep push down, each set to failure.

You can flame me, saying im too old for this workout, and yes im old. But i will never give up, and become and act like an old man. And im too heavy at 260. But i feel im in tremendous shape, no alcohol, no drugs, walking my dogs, still eating in a bodybuilding livestyle. Have stopped all sugar, and going low carbs to lower my 1AC, easier thing i have ever done. Feel great on 75 mgs of TRT👍👍
I’m thinking my goal would be to hit 315 for 6. So far, im thinking down the road it might be possible.

I don’t think there would be any reason to go beyond 275.... or 295 at the most.

3 plates looks cool on the bar. But you might end up straining a pec.

Not flaming, but do you train in a gym? No need to bench at your age, just stick to machines.

lollllllll stick to machines????????? Nope, ain’t gonna happen. As long as im able to lift like this, im going to lift like this. I don’t use any machines on chest day. Don’t use dumbbells because I can’t get them up anymore, to dangerous.

This is my point. Where in the rule book does it say i have to slow down at my age??????

I lift at a small commercial gym, mostly young kids and older men and women. The kids stay away from me, the older folks look at me like im an idiot.  lolllll I don’t care. I just put on my hoodie, put the top on my bald head, listen to my music, and do my thing.

I lift 4-5 days a week. Back is all machines, as i have a low back problem. Arms are close grip bench press and nose busters, which im pretty good at. Shoulders is a lot of trap work.

Had a knee replacement a year ago. Knees fine, but no leg work, i just walk my dogs.

Nothing heavy on back, no bent over rows, deadlifts, etc. if i pull my back its misery for 10 days.

But man, you do you.  IF I'm still alive at nearly 70, I would probably not flat bench anymore, either; then again, I'd already ditched them for 35-40 degree inclines (yeah, sometimes in the Smith!), weighted dips and the Hammer Iso-Incline by my mid-twenties.  I liked dumbell inclines with a long pause in the stretched position, but my local Gold's was bought out by Planet Shitness, and they got rid of all the 'bells over 75 lbs.  I tried doing those with even longer paused, deep stretches, like five seconds, but even then I think I was doing 30 reps+ with very slow negatives.  Total waste of time IMO, no matter what Israel or whoever says.

Only briefly, many years ago, when they bought out our Gold's.  For a time, they were the only game in town other than the Y, which was even worse in those days.

Also, if you'd spend less time trolling the board with those stupid coffee cup pics, maybe you could learn to read.  I didn't give Judo any "tips."

Prick.

Soon it will just be royalty arguing with his gimmick accounts.

Glad to see you’re still going strong Judo!

You can do lighter weights with higher reps?

I train at Planet Fitness.  I'll never need dumbbells heavier than 75lbs ever again.  They have added hack squats, seated calf raises and a plate loaded bench press to every location in my area.  $25 a month and I've got at least 7 locations within 10 miles of me maybe even closer.  Plus, the muff that parades in and around these joints makes cardio much less boring.

I have always done 6 rep sets. For years now, seems to be a good number for me. I do need to start using the smith machine for incline bench, will be a little safer im thinking. But my gym only has one, so it’s hard to get the machine to myself.

Move to high reps for a month and enjoy the gains.

Do you feel machines are safer? If yes, why still do free weights?

i have always been a good bencher pressor, 315 for reps in my 40s and 50s.

Any DB-only workouts?  Tendinitis can creep up if you're doing only one routine.

I'll add to the below that I have brachial Plexus nerve damage, so I can barely shake your hand, but I'm fighting it.  ;D

Phukkers like you are why I follow this forum.

I was at Six Flags many years ago and saw a dude who had clearly lost the use of his legs.  Even so, the fucker was on crutches getting around.   8)

My back (lumbar and cervical) gets worse every year, but I just think about that guy and get on with training.

You sound determined to destroy your body with dangerous imbalances. Heavy chest and triceps work and basically that's it? And some fluff for the rest of upper body? Swell idea bloke.

Wait you never train legs?

Bro is almost 70 and killing it.

I don't think he's in any danger, outside of him offending folks with his self-admitted sweaty smelly nutsack.

In the past, I have suggest he drop 50lb, but it is what it is.

He is strong AF for his age.

&t=84s                    Good for you breath defiance as long as you can. You might want to switch to machine bench presses might be somewhat safer.

post snapping my shoulders up i found a groove i could still bench with relatively pain free and put me in a similar ball park poundage wise. One thing I changed up big time that actually made a noticeable difference from early on was the first warmup set of any significance (old school weights with tinier holes and 55lb plates)where I made sure i did a full smooth touch n go 20 rep set. if i wasn't certain I'd do 2 and then move up.

may not sound like fuck all, but I wish i was less of a dickhead prior to this and had been doing it from the very start. really makes a difference. no soreness (of the bad type) post training and some gains (esp given I'm technically meant to be a cripple)

interestingly once the weights gett near limit,i find more than around 5-8 start tp hurt more than less. it's almost like whatever is left and keeping the joint in place only holds out for so many seconds at heavier weights.

Retired from powerlifting at age 40. There was a huge gym by me with a snack bar, bowling alley, etc, a real premium gym called sequoia in orange country. For your membership monthly price you could go to any of there instructional classes for free. Pretty cool. So i went to the beginning class and fell in love w judo.  After a month, i joined two hard core judo clubs in my area. I ended up going to classes 4-5 a week. Got my black belt in two years. Yes it was a ceremony black belt, as to get a REAL ronda rousey Japanese black belt would take years.

I did all of the tournaments, always the oldest guy there. If i fought a young kid, i has a chance. But with the older guys i always got smoked. Lolllllll never got hurt, as you learn how to fall and break fall.

But to do judo now would be suicidal. 😂

You can do lighter weights with higher reps?

I know.  But when you're doing a pair of 75s on DB incline as I described, whatwith the deep stretch holds at the bottom for 3-5 seconds per rep, using nice, smooth, negatives and you're stiĺl getting over 30 reps per set til failure, I reckon that's milking the lighter weight for higher reps to the Nth degree.
