Title: You're Full of Shit Humble Narcissist!
Post by: obsidian on January 20, 2026, 12:35:23 AM
It isn't my video. I am simply showing your argument is the wrong way to go. You can see light houses 200 miles out at see. This dismantles the point you are making. You can also see a ship on the ocean go over the horizon looking like it has disappeared by the curvature UNTIL you use a telescope and the whole ship comes right back into view.
It's sea and lighthouses, btw. You're welcome!

“Lighthouse” is one word because English treats it as a closed compound noun.

Originally, it was two words: light house (a house that holds a light). Over time, as the object became a single, well-defined concept, the words fused into one. This is very common in English.

In 2026, there is zero reason for you to be discussing lighthouses. With all the damage they've caused, it's actually downright offensive and not appropriate.

Yes, you are correct that it's one word.

Simply put, lighthouses are soon to be forgotten relics of the past.

People always think that lighthouses were safety buildings and protected the ships at night. That may have been their original purpose.

Unfortunately, much like highway billboards, lighthouses were found to be responsible for the majority of ship wrecks due to their tendency of distracting ship captains.

Look at the numbers. Lighthouses caused many fatal ship wrecks. There is even discussion regarding the Edmond Fitzgerald and the role lighthouses played in that tragedy.

Being a lighthouse keeper was a doomed and dismal job. Movies make it seem like the opposite. Everyone always pictures the peaceful bearded lighthouse keeper wearing a cap and eating stews. But most of them were nasty, deviant, odd, and hermit like anti-social people. Lighthouses were also notoriously haunted with malevolent spirits that tormented the lighthouse keepers. That is why most lighthouse keepers committed suicide and became sickly.

Time to wake up and rightfully move past lighthouses and take advantage of all that the modern nautical world offers.

Gruesome murders, suicides, strange deaths, and hauntings reported for some of the keepers of lighthouses on the Great Lakes, Seguin, Conimicut Shoal, and Pilot Island. That's why many people refuse to visit lighthouses because the spirits may attach to you and come home with you.

If you were a lighthouse keeper, being haunted and tormented by a spirit and eventually the possibility of death wasn't "will it happen?", it was "when will it happen?"

I know you're not asking me but as someone who had terrible sleep paralysis episodes for years it may interest you that it went away overnight completely after moving my bed to the other side of the room and facing another direction. Could be coincidence but its worth considering. This was completely unexpected as I moved it for practical reasons so there is no expectation of placebo

I,m not sure, it could be just physiological but there could be more to it. I had it a few times briefly many years ago but it would break quickly and I would wake up.

It is better to sleep with the head facing either east or south, something about the earths magnetic currents.

Head facing as in the top of the cranium pointing that direction? Or "facing" as in pointing with feet in that direction? (Assuming back sleeping posture)

I am now more or less facing east, so I am ready for the second coming of Christ

Thank you. I appreciate it.

That's interesting about facing the other direction. Last episode I had I thought something was coming up the stairs to me. When I turned over and faced the other way, it stopped it. After I faced the other way, I fully awoke and analyzed the situation and realized nothing was there and that it was impossible for anything to be there.

But there have been times in the past where I haven't been able to move at all.

Been happening less to me recently. But the last time it happened was the 1st time I was able to move and face the other way. Never heard about the magnetic currents but I'm going to look into that. Thank you.

To clarify, I shifted my bed from one wall to the wall next to it, and I also rotated 90 degrees as the bed is a square there was no need to rotate the bed. So in conclusion, I did not only rotate 90 degrees, I also moved my coordinates.

Also worth noting that (entiterly due to space restrictions) my new position now was my feet facing the door ans the bed frame is so close to the door that the door can only open 45 degrees. This means that there is no straight line entry possible and its likely to confuse intrudors and wake me up if they were to barge in forcefully

That's a good idea. I have traps set up at night when I go to bed. Such as shovels against my door, insect/rodent glue boards along my stairs/hallways, battery powered wedge door alarms, and ice melt bucket in front of the door. I also keep pepper spray by my bed. But I never thought about the placement of the bed. Very smart.

It means that if you dont know, you are likely open de door too far and ruin somewhat the element of surprise as it will bang into the bed. I considered starting to lock my bedroom which I don't do at the moment, but that could be a bad idea as well in some respects as it would mean my wife can't easily enter which could also be good but it could also be bad. Many complications arise in the realm of security when you are married. They could kill you in your sleep and sometimes this actually happens. I like to think that I should be locking the door for this reason.

Working at lighthouses used to be a form of punishment.  Like the person pissed you off for whatever reason and you couldn't kill him outright.  So it was off and exiled to an isolated duty that could break you mentally (and physically).  Later when people started getting paid for the job, a few more perks were thrown in.  Like rotating duties and such.   There is one off the coast in the Mediterranean (I can't think of the name).  It is a small plot of land (approx 4 acres) on top of a cliff, surrounded by water.  There is no way to safely leave other than by air.  It is a prized employment opportunity.  It is a four year stint that you share with another person.  6 months on, 6 months off.  All supplies have to be delivered by helicopter.  Once a week.  Unless an emergency.  You make out a list what you need/want (food, medicine, recreation material, etc.) and tender it to the arriving crew.  One week later when they return, they bring whatever.  (You hope) and pick up your new list.

Some people would think this is their dream job (and life).  I am sure with the internet and all it is much easier than in the past.

Well it seems from NaturalWonders accounts that the people who manned the lighthouses were driven to suicide. No benevolent force would suggest such things.

Originally, it was two words: light house (a house that holds a light). Over time, as the object became a single, well-defined concept, the words fused into one. This is very common in English.

The vertical distance between two objects 200 miles apart is about 5 miles (27,000 feet) due to the curvature of the earth.

The sighting distance is approximately the square root of the height of the object X 1.23 miles. So a 100 foot tall lighthouse (square root of 100 = 10) can be seen at most 10 X 1.23 miles or 12.3 miles away.

The Edmund Fitzgerald did not sink due to lighthouses. It sunk, then split in two pieces due to 30 foot waves in a historically bad storm.

OP should get a one week “band” for starting a whiny thread.

haha. No, I was calling him out on his claim that lighthouses can be seen 200 miles out at sea. That's a lie. Show me a lighthouse that's visible that far away with a telescope.

You’d need on the order of ~26,000 ft (about 5 miles up) for an object to be visible from 200 miles away to an observer near sea level.

Standard atmospheric refraction effectively makes Earth’s radius slightly larger, typically extending horizon distance by about 8%. That helps, but not enough to drastically change the result:

30,000 ft case:
~216 miles × 1.08 ≈ ~233 miles

So at 30,000 ft, a distant object could just barely be visible at 200 miles under ideal conditions, but anything significantly lower would still be hidden by Earth’s curvature.

I double checked these values in AutoCAD.

Your calcs are correct. I double checked in AutoCAD.

Actual visibility can be a bit more or less than this because refraction varies with temperature gradients (mirage/looming), and haze/contrast can limit what you can resolve even when geometry allows it.

The post was more about his claim that lighthouses can be seen from 200 miles away. That's pure BS. The lighthouse would need to be more than 5 miles tall if you're viewing 5-10' above sea level with a telescope. You won't be able to see it with the naked eye either. The greatest light range for a lighthouse is 51 nautical miles.

No.
The closest lighthouse at Whitefish Point is over 19 miles away as the crow flies. The lighthouse is close to 2,700 feet vertically below the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking site due to the curvature of the earth. The night the boat sank it was pitch black dark, there were 100 mph wind gusts and 30-foot waves.

Do you argue about things you don’t know anything about because you’re a bitch, or are you just chronically stupid?

I sense its both...

What a fucking clueless, confused pest that you are. Here comes your strawman defense.

Such knowledge from Les the Great Lakes Historian!
With such precise information, sounds like you were there the night the ship sank.

When is your annual trip to all the lighthouses to educate the confused memorial attendees? Guess all the countless books and articles about the role that the lighthouses played in the tradgedy are not correct.

Believe what you want. Were you also on the Titantic? What was the weather like that night?

I know you're not asking me but as someone who had terrible sleep paralysis episodes for years it may interest you that it went away overnight completely after moving my bed to the other side of the room and facing another direction. Could be coincidence but its worth considering. This was completely unexpected as I moved it for practical reasons so there is no expectation of placebo

Mine stays away if I have something playing on the TV (seems to be both light and sound)

The TV occasionally turns off because the thing I am playing errors out and like clockwork, the "demons" come.

Although I say that, I haven't been "visited" in a couple of years.  I used to have almost an attack a night where the dream would essentially be a trap - stuck in a car, no car door or some other almost freddy kruegeresque scenario where I realise I can't escape, bam paralysis attack.

If I was a religious person, I'd have been on my knees praying in church every day because that experience is utterly evil.

I'll tell you guys a funny story and I only tell you this from pure impartiality.  I have not made anything of it, but this is just truly what happened.

Once, I decided not to try to run from the thing/possession/etc.  I just stopped and tried to fight.  The rebuttal was instant and absolutely brutal.  It basically just did the equivalent of snapping its finger and I was filled with an all encompassing terror so strong that I quite honestly could not have believed it was possible to feel that, so intensely.  It's truly laughable how monumental it was.

Needless to say, I have never chosen to stand my ground, since  :)
