Platz was way ahead of his time. Those huge striated legs hurt his placings while his upper body was way underrated. A decade later things would have been different.

I thought david johns should have beaten kal skalak in 1976. IMHO.

2 other guys that always seemed to get the short end of the stick were Ken Covington and Rock Stonewall.

At least Dave Johns finally won it !!

Dave Johns was the best, died young of an infectious disease that only people in California know about (Valley Fever, not sure if it is still prevalent around Bakersfield and up the Central Valley).

I saw Dave Johns take an entire bottle of dbol in a few gulps at George Turner's Gym  back in the 80's.

I`m certainly not calling you a liar, but I`ve heard the same stupid stories about Arnold and Sergio eating handfuls of D-Bol like they were M&M`s.....I find it ridiculous and hard to believe.

I`m certainly not calling you a liar, but I`ve heard the same stupid stories about Arnold and Sergio eating handfuls of D-Bol like they were M&M`s.....I find it ridiculous and hard to believe.
Let me elaborate by saying the amount of similar stories I`ve heard regarding "handfuls or entire bottles of D-Bol being ingested" would have had these dudes breaking out bottles of D-Bol constantly, and in front of tons of people, all the time, when in those days most people kept gear use private or denied taking it at all.......ask yourself why ???

Even Dave Mastorakis personally told me Mike Mentzer kept his early gear use a secret from him and Ray Mentzer when they trained together in the early days of their training partnership ???

Dave and Ray were making zero progress, and  Mike was getting huge, so they asked him his "secret" and he finally told them he was on the juice.

Pearson's muscles really popped when he flexed.

Probably just a one time thing for the shock effect.

Phil Williams and Tony Pearson got their start in serious bodybuilding at Turner's.  Tony was gone by the time I started but saw Phil train many times. Also, Jeff King and Samir were there for a while.

Jeff King trained in my hometown for years since he was a teen, before going to Turners......nicest person you could ever meet.

Dave Johns was the best, died young of an infectious disease that only people in California know about (Valley Fever, not sure if it is still prevalent around Bakersfield and up the Central Valley).
Some good magazine covers here:

Very common all across the Southwest. When I lived in Phoenix you would often hear about Valley Fever deaths!

Who owns the rights to the Mr. America name now?  Seems there should be some value there.

Tom Platz always referenced his battle with Pearson at the Mr. America and Mr. Universe in 1978, when he did commentary at the two WBF championships.
