Lee Haney Successfully Undergoes 12-Hour Kidney Transplant

Bodybuilding legend and eight-time Mr. Olympia champion Lee Haney has successfully undergone a kidney transplant after a difficult 12-hour surgery.

Haney shared the news on September 29, thanking his family, fans, and everyone who supported him during his search for a kidney donor. Earlier this year, his family launched a campaign after doctors determined that he urgently needed a transplant.

The most remarkable part of Haney’s story is the identity of his donor. Richard Miller, a fellow bodybuilder who first crossed paths with Haney in 1985 and later competed in bodybuilding, stepped forward to donate his kidney.

Haney expressed his deep gratitude to Miller, calling him his “Iron Brother” and “hero.” He also thanked the medical team at Emory University for their care throughout the process.

After waking up from the 12-hour operation, Haney described the transplant as another testimony of God’s grace.

At 8x Mr. Olympia, Haney has already left an unforgettable mark on bodybuilding. Now, he begins another important chapter—recovery and a new chance at life

Is that a fascist salute?

Kidding. I’m glad for him, seems like a decent dude.

Haney was for years the symbol of a champion bodybuilder who had kept his health.
Not so.

This really hits hard to think Haney retired at a young age of 31,
Nick just won his first one at 32?  ..

Dauda and Andrew are in their 40's

 ;D .. Heil Haney.

Don't need to be a religious person to recognize and appreciate FAITH.

“Graft survival (long-term): Over a 5-year period, about 80% to 85% of kidney transplants in 60-something recipients remain fully functional.”

“Black / African American Recipients:
Higher Rejection Risk: Studies consistently show a slightly higher rate of both acute and chronic rejection compared to other racial groups.
Immunological Factors: Black recipients tend to have higher baseline immune activity, stronger T-cell responses, and a higher prevalence of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) variations that make finding a precise donor match more challenging.
Drug Metabolism: Variations in the CYP3A5 gene—more common in individuals of African descent—cause faster metabolism of key immunosuppressive medications (like tacrolimus), requiring higher or more carefully monitored doses to maintain effective levels.“

My office manager first kidney lasted 28 years and she’s had this second one for 5. I think if you take care of yourself, and make it last the “rejection phase” you’re good.

It depends on the condition of the person. We just lost a friend at 38, due to kidney failure. Her transplant was 10 years old.

Lee Haney once said that "God put the white and the yolk together for a reason and they should be eaten together."  This was back deep in the time of egg white omelet obsessions and hearing it blew my mind.

Lee Haney is the greatest bodybuilder of all time.
He's better than Arnold and better than Ronnie.

He's a man of great faith and character. Because of these I knew the right person would have no problem giving up a kidney for Lee.

The only one who still had an Olympia-winning-worthy physique in his final show.

Shame he doesn’t get the same recognition as the rest of the serial winners.

Haney is a great man overall.  Not just a competitor.  His gym in Atlanta was one of the best I ever worked out in.  Had a lot of pros and top level amateurs there as well.  He was always very free with his time and talked about things when he was in the gym.  I don't think anyone could ever say a bad thing about him.

And now Lunsford sets the standard.

And now Lunsford sets the standard.

I would have a hard time believing any one out there would ever look up to Lumpsford or want his advice on anything.  Haney was inspirational, Lumpsford is not.  But then again, not many on the scene today are.
