Title: You all are wasting your time and your breath regarding Marketing shows
Post by: Azure on May 14, 2006, 06:49:14 PM
People still won't show up.  There's a lack of buzz first of all.  Why come?

Bodybuilding shows are poorly run first of all.  There is a lack of professionalism that just makes it a joke.  Let's start with a simple thing like programs.  That would be nice to let people know what's going on.

Second of all most people are there to support friends and family.  There is nothing to hold your attention.

Haven't you noticed that most people leave once their people pose and then don't win their weight class?

I'm not a Shawn fan but you all are killing me over here analyzing to death why his show didn't do well or whatever.  Hardly anyone's shows do well and that's basically because the entire infrastructure of bodybuilding shows needs to be changed.

They don't need WWE skits...They jsut need to do like they did back in the 1970's and to some degree 1980's and return it to a professional event.

Shawn Ray could have stopped in 2 gyms every time he was in Colo this year, chatted with the owners, signed a few autographs, and sold tickets from his briefcase.  Would have been another 100-150 tickets easily.

You guys keep saying this stuff, but really I don't think it would have made much of a difference.

Bodybuilding has a cult following.  Those same few that go to every show even when they don't know anyone in the show, will support anything having to do with bodybuilding that comes to town.

I know I personally only go to shows when I know people in them, and unless they win their weight class...I'm out as soon as they are done.  the shows are boring and run worse than High School theater.

Fair enough.  many BBers are also introverts.  They aren't likely to call ticketmaster, pay for a ticket, and go to a show.  Which means 1) They might be more likely to buy a ticket if it's standing in front of them with a smiling Shawn Ray or Phil heath and 2) They might not be able to say no.  The same way a super-hot girl can sell a freezer to an eskimo, a pro BBer could convince a young BBer to attend a show.

hell, it shows they care.  Nobody gets their feet dirty anymore.  They order ad space and do appearances.  Which works okay for mass market appear items- but definitely not for niche offerings like a BBing show.

240 has been to one amateur show, and now he knows what will work.  240 just go ahead and call AMI, they'll pay you milliions for your formula.  Seriously.  A working formula that guarantees a profit margin to be tripled, or more, is worth a lot of money.  Why are you wasting your brilliance upon this board?   I think it's time for you to move on.

I know how to sell, and I know how to market.

How can you "triple a profit margin" that's already in the red?

Not really.  Most gyms are full of average joes and the time allotted wouldn't have been fruitful.

Shawn did the right thing marketing to where the majority of the bodybuilding fans are.  The message boards

Bodybuilding has a cult following.
whats wrong with a cult following? some want to enjoy bb as a fan, not as a way to become a millonaire. this "sport " might be a lot better if every damn person involved wasn't trying to become rich.

the most successful shows i've seen have all had guys/girls selling tickets directly at gyms (ie. they physically have the tickets and a seating chart on hand).

the promoter also gave these guys a cut of the sales and checked in each week to collect the money and give the seller their cut of the action.

A motivated desk girl can make some nice change selling tickets this way...

There's nothing wrong with having a cult following, but just don't be surprised if you don't sell out venues.

And I agree with the poster who said Shawn did the right thing about posting the info on the boards.  Obviously they are the people who follow bodybuilding and know who people are.

I've been at shows where people don't even know who Ronnie Coleman is.

I think 240 and jwb are right, alot of people work out, many are not interested in bodybuilding but if good looking girls behind the counter were selling them i would bet they can get more people to see the show, but there is no way they can get huge crowds on par with football or basketball

I agree that you need to sell sex more.  Selling to men with hot women works...so does selling the fact to women that the guy swill be up there in some skimpy ass suits.

When I used to go to a lot of shows back in the day, there were a ton of women there who liked the men that competed whether it was Mike Mattarazzo or Flex Wheeler.  Sure I mean some were screwing the guys but that is another topic.

I went to a show last year where this older woman who was there to see a family member practically ran everyone down to get a pictuer of whoever the guest poser was that day.

No they won't be like basketball and football you don't want those  huge crowds anyway.  It's bad enough wehn you can't see folks on stage.

Nothing is going to change. There are people here giving out good ideas and suggestions, but the reality of it is, that bbing is stuck in the dark ages. Everything about it is bush league.

1)It's boring.

2) The scoring is done with pencils and paper, so the audience has no idea of what is going on. The audience just sits there without a clue.

3)The judging is shady. The guy who should win doesn't always win.

Yeah, I know. I was being sarcastic.

That just goes to show you. Nobody outside of the bbing community knows who Mr. Olympia is, or cares. Mr. what? Mr. Belvedere?  :-\

Really sad.

Of course, the one appearance Ronnie makes on Jay Leno, he embarrasses himself.

Absolutely correct.  24 Hour Fitness in Honolulu for my show sold more than 200 tickets in a month.  I also had two other gyms selling.  That is a normal avenue to sell.  And yes you kick back the manager and person who sell the most tickets.  I told the story about Wayne and the 1st NOC.  He went to a popular gym there and asked them to sell tickets.  They said no.  He came back and said how about if I bring Robbie robinson to do an appearance.  The owner said okay.  They promoted the show at the gym and Robbie coming there to sign autogrpahs.  Wayne and Robbie had to park a few blocks away because of traffic and no parking spaces.  They couldn't understand it  As they got out of the car and wa walking around the corner they saw  this huge line of people.  Must have been a grand opening or something of a store.  As Robbie walked by people noticed him and starting yelling like he was a rock star.  The line ended up at the gym.  There had to be a few hundred people there.  The owner couldn't believe Robbie actually came.  They sold a few hundred tickets right there.  This is where as much as Sean thnks he knows.  He knows nothing about promoting a show.  Sure it was nice seeing him on TV and on the radio and at a fight.  But, he did nothing to promote the show the way the show should have been promoted.  Sorry guys but these are the facts and the results support it.

I think despite some initial shitting on my idea, they're coming around...

Next year, I bet there will be some crazy idea to hit up the local gyms with a little more than posters ;)  And Shawn, Lift, guys, PM me next time!  As annoying as I can be, I do have about 10,000 ideas for everything I encounter, and I really do want to see the Colo Pro succeed, despite my penchant for taking the antagonist angle!

I actually thought it was pretty funny how the TV station spelled your name wrong.  That was classic.  I am just carrying on the tradition.

And you are special

Denver is a loser destination unless you're a lesbian in a Chevy S10.  it's in the middle of nowhere and bodybuilding is really an oddball in Denver.  did the military ever show up?
but it is terrific that 500 muscle worshippers paid for this event.  at least they came out of the closet.  they should have had better multicultural participants.  now it will be known as a black show.

Here is a good tip.  Sean and BB.com are very close.  BB.com is the biggest and busiest website selling supplements in the world.  Sit down at the computer and punch in what zip code or area code has the most sales.  Do the top ten locations in the country. And go from there.  It is evident from sales that thse people are intersted in health.  Mayb not so much about BB but definitely being healthy.  Find out the best sellers (MuscleTech, BSN, MetRx etc.) contact them and get them as major sponsors.  Give them some booths to giveaway free shit and promote the hell out of it that these companies are going to eb there giving away shit.  You'll pack the house.  Have company bring out some of their spnsored atheltes.

1) I already said that LIFT should bring along wireless EFT capability to accept check cards
2) The posters advertising the appearance could include the fact that tickets were to be sold.

How hard is it to run your car and grab your check card?

Dont need to sell the tickets at the gym.  Promote the show a couple of weeks out on the monitors.  Make sure it's real good with dynamic material and up-to-date music.  Place posters of the athletes who will show up and what dates plus the prizes they'll have with them.  Have the fit and fig girls hit the gyms 3-4 days out.  F44k me!  I know people would run on hands and knees to meet Monica, Dina, DJ and Bethany if they all showed up at one time for 45-60 mins of Q&A, training, diet and rubbing elbows.  Remember the ladies look a bit different in non-comp condition.  Something regular members can shot for including men.  Cant say the same about looking like Ronnie or Jay.  Maybe you have Richard Jones and the smaller guys tag along.

Most people in the gym don't want to be bothered. I know when I am in the gym if someone comes up to me I'm annoyed. The big gyms don't allow you to come in and pass out anything much less sell anything. 24hr fitness / Ballys / etc. all have strict corporate rules. Not discrediting the ideas guys but there are other factors you are forgetting.

plus sell them at the front counter when they enter. get the girls to push it. also at the pro shop...

LOL, even the NASCAR fans and the WWE  fan-morons, go to the events, buy tickets and support the events.
Those that support the drug freak are not a very good demographic in terms of financial support are they?
Keep on letting the drugs run the sport into a side show freak-a-palooza,  and watch the numbers dwindle.
The majority of the hardcore we love freaks crowd won't even go to a show.
The ironic thing is that Heath and Darrem Charles have the kind of bodies that could have enormous mainstream appeal and corssover markets. BUT but being assoc. with "roids and freaks" nobody will give it a chance.
