Title: Weird - what other guys have this "ability"?
Post by: donrhummy on May 16, 2006, 04:41:48 PM
It's weird that Phil Heath can look like a fairly small (for a pro) bodybuilder while standing relaxed and then looks 40 pounds heavier when posing. His muscles absolutely pop and explode when he flexes. Are there other BB's like that?

Can you believe these two pics are of the same guy just minutes apart?!

Apparently Arnold was the same way, read in an old Musclemag that onstage he doubled in size when he flexed.

Arnold claims it's from doing more reps. When you do power training a la Franco Columbu, you have a thick look, but your muscles are "just there."
But when you do more reps, your muscles will pop more, and create the dramatic effect you speak about.
Hey, just what Arnold claims in his Encyclopedia.

Damn dude, you took the words out of my mouth. Yes, Phil has that quality and as I said before his conditioning was almost 100% percent for this show.

Heath looks like modern Flex Wheeler and may be what the sport needs.
I feel his physique is incredible in these pics.

Good observation Donrhummy! Thats the difference between HIT training and volume training and every champion should have that effect going!

Another guy who had that quality was Egypt's Mohamed Makkawy.  He was a small guy who didn't look terribly impressive just standing in a lineup.  But when he posed he seemed to grow and come to life.

Mohamed placed 2nd to Samir Bannout in the 1983 Olympia and 2nd to Lee Haney in 1984.

I've always felt that this effect is why ronnie coleman keeps beating jay cutler.  When cutler poses, nothing happens.  when ronnie poses, shit explodes.

Just like Flex Wheeler, who had come on stage with the most amazing physique in many contests, Phil Heath has the ability to become one of the top competitive bodybuilders in the industry. Over hyped - absolutely. And Phil, as a rookie, walked the walk, and is very humble in talking smack.

Can you explain that, Guru?  ???

Yes Suh!

Ok look at the guys that train hit style: Mike Mentzer, Casey Viator, Doggcrapp trainees... when they flex its like they have one layer of muscle with no striations and they cannot pump that shit up.

On the other hand guys like Arnold, Sergio, Haney would use volume and train like real men and voila, nice shape, symetry and on top of that they have total control of the muscle and the muscle pump. In other words they look like champions because they trained like champions.

its used to be called "peek-a-boo" muscle.  good observation with the sport today compared to 20 yrs ago.  some say it has something to do with a certain drug(s) that keeps the muscle tonus at a higher % at all times, ala looking flexed when relaxed and no shape/size/look change of the muscle when flexed.  as others stated has to do with training also, fiber types trained & so on.

Synthol ::)  also prevents the "pop"!
