Title: Bev's powerhouse gym
Post by: pumphard on May 18, 2006, 04:50:17 PM
Anybody know how far Syosset N.Y is from Manhatten?  Also, anybody know why they switched to Powerhouse Gym from Gold's last july?

Franchise fees.
Their name is the one selling the gym.  Not "Gold's"
Go with the cheaper franchise, and they will still draw the same people.

Is it worth going to that gym, or is there another gym in New York City that someone recommends?  I will be in Manhatten in about a month.

Maybe it's a cover-up

I mean she isn`t exactly the most womanly thing on the planet.

I know, but I've never heard anything about her being gay.

It was a pretty big rumor in the 80s amongst a few top bodybuilders.

It would be worth going to see once, perhaps on a weekend.  You could even take the LIRR to Syosset, then a cab the mile or so to the gym.  But its really too far to go daily.  There are plenty of gyms in Manhattan.  Gold's is on 54th between 8th and Broadway, but they may have changed names too.   Steel Gym on 23rd between 6th and 7th.  The new David Barton gym in the old YMCA building at 23rd and 7th (the gay factor may be a bit much there).  Chelsea Piers, 19th St Gym, plenty of New York Sports Clubs and Balleys, Equinox, lots of others.

What is known as the hardcore gym in Manhatten area?

there are many small but serious gyms throughout Manhattan.  there is no one must-go-to gym.  people don't like to walk long distances in the snow, so people find a gym close to where they live or work.  however, the answer you're looking for is Steel Gym.

Thanks bro, I appreciate your help.  How do I find Steele Gym?  Also, where's a good place to find supplements cheap in the manhatten area?

Thanks bro, I appreciate your help.  How do I find Steele Gym?

I already said it was on 23rd St between 6th Ave and 7 Ave.  Do you want a map (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/maps/extmap;_ylt=AjG9aISvKEzHVBZvQV4kk7tkDLMF/*-http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?name=Steel+Gym+Inc&ed=1svgv.p_0TrIzRvaYvrJAtDg6x1GxwXklNCx2Q9zm7AidKs3DnwXQ.ewUg2t8IuC.pA5JIrPDePa6oXmL635RlWAfMXXuo8k&csz=New+York+NY+10011&desc=%28212%29+352-9876&mag=2&ds=n&state=NY&uzip=&country=us&BFKey=&cat=&resize=l&trf=0)?

It's Manhattan.  You won't find cheap.   There are lots of Vitamin Shoppes.  There was a big health food store on 8th Ave around 50th or so, but I forget the exact address.

Gold's is on 54th between 8th and Broadway, but they may have changed names too.

No Dice for that gym. The biggest dumbells are 120's there. I made the mistake of trying to train there last month in NYC.

Out in Long Island has Bev Francis and Powerhouse of Farmingdale. From my experience Long Island has the best Gyms. I did not have a chance to check out Steel Gym. If someone has a review of Steel Gym post up.

Bev's gym is rated one of the top gyms in the states. Over 28,000 sq. ft., with tons of up to date equipment and cardio machines.

Bev is NOT GAY! She had alot of gay women join her gym, thinking she was. When they found out she was STRAIGHT and with Big Steve, almost all left...

Don't slander Bev. She loves her husband and children. It's NOT a cover-up.

I trained with her for close to 10 years. She's a good person and friend.

FYI: Bev looks like a normal albeit muscular mom at 5'5 145lbs. She doesn't look like the picture posted previously posted, anymore

These gyms are all close together in the Chelsea area. Try a free workout at each then decide:

24-7, 14th st. & 6th:
Inexpensive, somewhat crowded, good equipment if heavily used/worn.

Steel Gym on 23rd between 6th and 7th.
Kinda small, been there forever under different names.

David Barton gym YMCA building 23rd between 7th & 8th.
19th St. gym between 5th & 6th
I like both of these gyms for the energy and equipment. Very gay, but they're good gyms if you can overlook this.

Chelsea Piers, 23rd st. west & west side highway:
Huge, worth taking a look for the variety.

Mid-town west:

Gold's, 54th W.

Mid-City Gym 49th between 7th & 8th. Classic old-school NY original. Good equipment, a little grungy, lots of history.

Syosset's a nice schlepp from NY; unless there's a compelling reason to go there in particular, don't bother. The suburbam gyms have more space but it's not a crucial difference.

The thing about gyms in Manhattan is that you'll see a lot more openly gay guys than you would usually run into in the outer boroughs, i.e. Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens.  If you don't mind showering along side a couple of fags then it's all  good.  The NYSC are especially guilty of this and you can hear their girlish giggles a mile away.  I have nothing against queers, however I don't feel comfortable when I'm about to take a shower and some dude is checking me out the way a striaght guy would check out a hot chick if she were to decide to shower in the men's locker room.

If their names are selling the memberships why purchase a franchise at all? Why not just open their own independent gym?

Does being part of a franchise bring any benefits that the independent gym owner doesn't see other than being able to use the name?

When you're part of a franchise they will send you a magazine once a year..

Well one of the biggest things is the ability for your members to use any Gold's Gym in the world with a travel pass.  The new owners of Gold's have changed allot of things.  Since Pete sold it the Francisees are less happy.  In some instances they are charing the fee based on GROSS sales.  Their expo has been lacking cause now they charge their vendors a percentage.  Gold's is also the #1 brandname in the industry.  Members and visitors do like to purchase their clothes.  There are some good advantage of having a franchise.
