Title: LITTLE MEN KEEP ON COMPLAINING!
Post by: alexxx on May 23, 2006, 08:03:36 PM
I noticed that the smaller guys, when we talk about strengh, they always say pound for pound this 120 pound says JOJ beats everybody.. ??? This makes no sense! Ok here is an example:

Ronnie benching 5 plates at 300 pounds
Tiny strengh enthousiast maxing at 5 plates at 180 pounds

Why would you say the tiny sucker is stronger? I bet if he was going for size that he would be benching 5 plates still at a bodyweight of 181 pounds.. Ronnie could bench 5 plates at 220pounds! Anyways food for though.

Sorry I meant that bigger guys lifting heavy weights is as impressive as little guys lifting the same weight.

You think little guys choose to be small or are they afraid of training? Say anyone lower than 220 pounds?

Is this 'Alexxx Logic' (aka stupidity)?

I always think it's impressive when a little guy can lift a lot of weight for his size but it's no match for a big guy lifting more weight. An exception is a little guy who can do a lot of pull-ups because he has no real bodyweight, or does a lot of dips because he has no legs to weigh him down. I'm not impressed with either of those.

In powerfliting a formula is used where the lifts are multiplied by a scaled coeficeint to determine best overall lifter.
the 2 most popular formulas were the Schwartz and the Malone.

someone that benches (for example) 5 plates a side at 180 lb bodyweight is more impressive than someone that benches 5 a side at 300 lb bodyweight.

Alexxx as much as I try to ignore you, you're childish and stupid posts make it almost impossible.  Ok, we all get the point that you are tall.  Fine, go with it.  It does not mean that everyone who is shorter than you is less than you.  As soon as you are outlifted by someone shorter than you you pull the old cop out "well his arms are shorter than mine"  boo fucking hoo.  Cry me a river.

You are starting to look like you're lacking alot of self confidence....here's one for you:  shut the hell up and train, stop trying to make yourself feel better by putting other people down.

The "beauty" of strength training is that depending on your build you are bound to have some lifts in which you are predisposed to be stronger or weaker. Very few guys can say that they have perfectly balanced strength levels, unless they worked very hard to correct biomechanical disadvantages.

For example take two opposite body types:

a) short limbs/relatively long torso ... in Soviet sport-science literature this is called a "dolicomorph" but in layman's terms we could say "short and stocky".

b) long limbs/relatively short torso ... still in Soviet sport-science lit this is called a "brachiomorph"

Now, the first body-type is built to be mechanically advantaged in lifts such as the bench press and squats while the second body type is mechanically advantaged for deadlift-types of exercises, olympic lifts and most pulling movements.

So in that case a lighter/shorter dolicomorph might be able to bench much more than a heavier/taller brachiomorph. So in that regard relative strength (strength vs. bodyweight) might not be all that relevant.

However, if we take two individuals with the same body-type, the heavier lifter (all other things being equal) will always have the advantage. First because the added muscle mass increases strength potential, second because in some lifts the added "bulk" actually provides a certain mechanical advantages, often by reducing the movement's range of motion. Take for example a guy with a huge chest, he will have to lower the bar to a lesser extent because of his muscle mass. Same thing goes for a guy with huge glutes, hams and calves when we are talking about squatting. This is why, in powerlifting/pure strength training, added weight, even in the form of fat can help you lift more weight. So an heavier lifter should be able to lift more (given a similar body type and level of training). Hence the reason why a 180lbs guy bench pressing 500lbs is more impressive than a 300lbs guy doing the same weight.

The only basic lift where added bulk doesn't provide much of an advantage is the deadlift because being "thicker" sometimes prevent the lifter from keeping the bar close to his body, which increases the difficulty of the lift.

As it was mentionned earlier in the thread, this is the reason why strength sports like powerlifting and olympic lifting use formulas to adjust the weight lifted to the body weight, so that lifters can be compared.

That having been said, as I mentionned earlier... being bigger, even in the form of muscle mass, is no garantee of being potentially stronger because different body types are built to perform well on different lifts. Take me for example, I'm a short and stocky fellow... as a result I have always had great facility squatting and bench pressing big weights. However the deadlift has always been a huge achilles tendon of mine. This is a shame because I actually started out as an olympic lifter (a sport which requires a pulling-advantaged body). When I trained with several members of the Canadian National team at the Centre Claude-Robillard I would always kick everybody's ass in the squat and front squat... including several guys who competed at the world championships, Pan Am games and even Olympics. However when it came to performing the actual competition lifts I wasn't even remotely close.

That's not to say that it's impossible to go against your natural leverage. One of my best friend is a natural powerlifter/strongman competitor. He's 6'3" and around 290 with super long arms and legs and a very short torso. As a result he is a natural deadlifting machine. Heck when he was 16 years of age... at a bodyweight of 178lbs (still on 6'3") he held the Canadian junior record with a 600lbs effort!!! However for the longest time his bench press and squat sucked.

But he kept on training hard and eating everything in sight and now at 29 years of age he bench pressed 535lbs in competition (making 575lbs in the gym) and squatting in the low 700s. It took him a long time, but he was able to build decent lifts against his poor leverages.

Bottom line is that added size will help you lift bigger weights, however sheer bodyweight is not the only factor to consider when comparing two lifters.

Ok Alexx, the thing to do is to VERIFY that you do have decent physique by getting into the open div of an NPC national qualifier in your region.
If you do well in that against some decent area guys, then you can brag.
Until then, it is not very credible to brag how great a bodybuilder you are.
All the best and let us know what your contest plans are this year.
Howard

PS/ Not that it matters to anyone but me, I have been in over 30 shows and won a few overall titles and placed in the top 3 at the AAU Jr Mr America (back in the day), etc. I honestly think I was just a good regional bodybuilder, nothing more.

that's good advice.  Alexxx we've all seen your pics, you think your huge..great, more power to ya.  Truth is, from what I've seen you're average at best..not a put down, I'm being honest.  The gains you claim to make are totally unbelievable.  Like I said before, shut the hell up and train...wait 6 months then repost some pics, then we'll be able to tell how good you are.  Until then you're gonna get ragged like there's no tomorrow.

No you don't win money from amateur show.

well I think if you win the overall at the provincial you have like 500 $ and the canadian 1000$

I could be wrong but I think it was that way last year.

But here is the plan alexxx ! you find some sponsors to pay for your expenses ( I am sure Reebok or Nike would be REALLY interessed). Then you win the progym, provincial AND the canadian overall. that would make you 1500 $.

Well, some local supplement companies do sponsor bodybuilders. My girlfriend got 2000$ in cash, plus 2000$ worth of supplements for her preparation for the Canadian championships last year, she also received something like 500-600$ worth of supplements from an independant supplement store BUT she has a website which attracts over 12 000 unque visitors per month, which is more attractive for sponsors... my friend who won the masters class at the Canadian champs (and won his pro IFBB card) had a similar deal with the same company. But these are only for athletes who are already qualified for the Canadian champs (which is actually not an easy thing to do, especially for guys). Some of my friends are "sponsored" by the same company but only receive 500$ in cash and 500$ worth of supplements, but were talking about guys who only reached the provincial level.

Then again, you cannot simply walk in their office and ask for cash. They will not sponsor someone who hasn't competed before. They are not doing this to help you out, but to make money. And to do so they must be certain that the athlete will actually present himself on stage and look decent.

BTW, 2000$ dollars in cash sounds good, but that doesn't even being to cover the grocery bills!!! Contest eating is MUCH more expensive than "regular" eating. For some odd reason "junk" or low quality food costs much less than high-quality/bodybuilding friendly food.

As an example, my daily food bill (for myself alone) is around 30-40$ per day when preparing for a show.. so that's around 210-280$ per week just to eat the proper food. As a comparison, a few weeks ago I had a cheat day and bought enough junk (donoughts, cookies, ice cream, etc.) for a whole army and it cost me something like 15$ and I wasn't even able to eat half of it during the day!

Considering that a solid preparation period (depending on your starting body fat level) lasts anywhere from 12 to 20 weeks, we're talking 2500 - 5000$ only for the food!!! Obviously you would still need to buy food even if you weren't dieting, so that's not all extra expenses, but from experience, contest eating is something like 40-50% more expensive than regular eating... so best case scenario we're talking about an additional 1250 - 2500$ just from food.

Then you must consider the supplements issue. Again, one of the sad things is that if you decide to do a show naturally (no drugs) your supplement bill will actually be bigger than a guy's drug bill (unless he uses more expensive stuff like hGH). For example, your protein powder might come up to 70$/month, creatine 50$/month, glutamine 40$/month, BCAAs (almost mendatory for the natural bodybuilder) 40$/month, various other sups (tribulus, a fat burner, vitamins, minerals, etc.) might run you up and additional 50-60/month. It's quite easy to invest 200-300$/month in supplements when preparing for a show. Now, you don't HAVE TO use supplements. But they sure can help, especially if you go the natural route. So right there we're talking about an additional 600-1200$ for the preparation.

Then you have the little extras like the pro tan (body colour for the show), oild, posing suit, registration fees (100$ for most competitions in Quebec/Canada), show photographer (60$), federation card (60$), etc. If you hire a coach to help you out you will normally have to shell out an additional 150-250$/month. Then you might have hotel/travel fees. When my girlfriend competed at the Canadian World Qualifyer (natural canadian champs) 2 years ago we had to go to Ontario and the journey/hotel and fringe expenses went up to close to 2000$ This year she is competing in both the WQ in Ontario and the "regular" Canadian champs in Saskatchewan... she we're talking at least 4000$ right there. And I don't even want to think about if she wins the WQ and qualifies for the Amateur World championships in Spain... another 4000$

As you can see if you are doing this for the money you are in the wrong sport!!! The only guys/gals who make money DIRECTLY from the sport are the top 10-15 pros in the world and MAYBE some very marketable  top level amateurs. Now, many WILL make money indirectly by using their competitive status as a marketing tool to boost their personal training business. But as a rule of the thumb, when you compete at the amateur level each contest you do will cost you money.

One other thing that many people don't consider is that in the last phases of a pre-contest diet you're pretty much a zombie. As a result many guys/gals have to lower their workload/job hours and as a result make less money than they normally would. A guy I trained and who won the Pro Gym cup last year (light heavy and overall) actually dropped out of his university program during his diet because he was unable to focus.

That having been said, if you truely love the sport, you'll do it by passion and money will appear to be very secondary. And if you really want to do it and have the burning desire to surpass yourself, don't let anybody try to convince you not to do it... there will always be some negative energy from peoples around you when you are preparing for a show.

Hmmmm... the 30-40$ actually was a bit conservative (I always pay with my debit card and never really look at what it costs me) so I did a little calculation. Yesterday's food (BTW, I always buy my food on the same day as I eat it, this allows me to avoid stockpiling anything and being tempted to overeat).

4 cartons pasteurized egg whites - 3.50$ each; 14$
4 lean turkey portions (175g each) - 4.89$ each: let's say 20$
Green veggies - 6.40$, let's say 7$
Fat free cheese pack - 4.39$: let's say 4.50$
Crystal light - 1 pack (6 individual portions) 2.89$: let's say 3$

For a daily total of around 48$ ... basically 50$ And that's pretty much my standard daily diet... I also ingest 2 whole eggs per day, so that's about a dozen a week...3$ more, but that's hardly significant.

350$/week on food, I'm depressed now... I can only imagine how much guys like Jay Cutler spend!!!

BTW, I am one of the "LITTLE MEN" at a tad under 5'8" (what happened, I used to be 5'9" in high school :(  ) but I'm not complaining... well I might be on the food issue, but that's about it!

Yes... 4 cartons = 100g of protein ... I don't use much protein powder when dieting, only 1 shake of isolate post workout... with the turkey I get 120g of protein, 54g from the isolate powder and 12g from the whole eggs for a total of 285g per day, which is pretty standard for a 200-205lbs competitor.

:-X And to think I have trouble eating only 6-8 egg whites

Why you don't use much protein powder ?
Is there a specific reason or it's only a personal choice ?

I noticed that the smaller guys, when we talk about strengh, they always say pound for pound this 120 pound says JOJ beats everybody..
I love that pound for pound shite. That's why I do HEAVY weighted dips and pull ups on a regular basis so I can beat the lil varmints and they don't have that excuse. If I do dips and pullups with with a 110lb dumbell at 255lbs  and YOU at a body weight of 175lb do the same exercise with a max 80 lbs --I'm stronger than you regardless of our respective weight!! Great to be able to throw the lil mans excuses right out the fucking window  ;D

When dieting down I prefer to ingest as much solid food as possible, at least I have the illusion of getting more food in.

You're spending way too much on food here.. you should buy in bulk. If you have the willpower you won't overeat.

Here check out my daily nutrition plan even though its not competition it is still pretty clean.

100 ml of eggwhite  1$
3 whole large eggs  0.16$
2 cans of tuna         2$
1 chicken breast      2.40$
60 g oatmeal          0.10$
5 slices of bread      1$
4 scoops of protein   1.80$
1 banana                 0.10$
veggies                   1$
1.25L of 2% milk       1.56$

Which gives me a total of = 11.12$ a day

Now for competition diet I would just eat 4 cans of tuna a day and vegies.. no big deal.

as for sups go I also use vitamins which cost me at a discounted price of 65$ as oposed to the regular price which is 80$

It's not a question of willpower... it's also a question of food liking... few people know this, but I'm extremely difficult. I really don't like many foods, and what I like is generally more expensive. For one thing I don't like oatmeal. Plus, I'm very carb sensitive and bloat/gain fat like crazy on bread, pasta and potatoes. I also like my food to be fresh, I don't like frozen stuff. I don't like tuna either, can't stamd it! Money isn't an issue for me, so I'd rather spend 30$ more per day and eat stuff I appreciate rather than feeling like crap. I really wasn't complaining about the cost of a preparation, I was just making a point.

BTW, a guy your size would loose muscle mass like crazy on 4 can of tuna and green veggies per day... even with 4-8 scoops of protein powder.
