Nice to see those pics. Reminded of the travesties that led to departures of the best guys. '82 was no better than '81 or '80; Padilla lost to both Columbu & Dickerson.

Surprised they didn't have any back shots of Franco, That was his strongest bodypart and he dwarfed all of those guys in the lat spread.

Padilla looked great though, Platz was never a factor, his legs were just to big for his body ... they actually cared a little about symmetry back then.

Thanks for the pics though.

at least with the 1980 contest, people are either 'for' or 'against' Arnold. but for 1981 NO ONE argues on behalf of Franco. and i shall adhere to that tradition.

Overall i would say Franco had the best upperbody but his legs really held him back, if his legs were atleast striated and ripped i would say he fully deservred to win but not by a large margine.

agreed.  Franco looked good considering what he had gone through but he was outclassed at this show.  One could argue for Padilla, Platz or a couple of other guys.  Plus you have to remember that alot of top guys boycotted this show because of the 80 fiasco.  Throw in Zane, Coe and even Metzer and you've got one hell of a brew ha ha.

Some boycotted because of the questionable judging, eventually most of the very best ones  left the IFBB without many greats for a few years. Yet this bozo claims the contests are 100% legit-exactly what an Iron Age clone would say. hahahhhahah

Pumpster. Sometimes you act like you have a brain but most times your fucking clueless. Most people on Ironage think the 1980 and 1981 Olympia's were a joke. How many people on Getbig were even old enough to remember 1980 and 1981? Most people at Ironage do remember those years. Yet by your logic the people on Getbig who weren't even born have a better view of the 1980 and 1981 Olympia's than the people at Ironage who actually remember the contests?

Whoever said it first, I totally concur, that was one horrible lineup.  I always rooted for Waller, he was always thick, but he looks like total shite here.  He should have retired already.  Franco, although powerfully built, did not have what I consider a championship bodybuilding physique.  You know it's a shitty lineup when not one guy looks not just good but amazing.  There were a couple guys here that looked good but nobody looked amazing.  By default only I would have gone with Padilla.

sometimes he is sympatic but I think he is clearly delusional about modern day bodybuilding.

the other day he was explaining to me that It should only take me 4 years to become a pro bber ( I am 18 ).

So I asked him, how am I supposed to gain pro level size in 4 years ?!

he said: " Listen kid, at your age I was mr.universe and training with arnold in california ! Look at the bodyfitness girls that I train, next year they will win the canadians and get a pro card" ( those girls barely won a regional level show )

Padilla has NO quad sweep and a very goofy, strange look on his face in all the shots.

well, he's totally shredded..I think it's ok to give up a little sweep to come in in that condition.  I actually remember reading that the judges marked him down for being drawn in the face...no that's being a little nitpicy.

Thats a piss poor excuse why judges placed Padilla so low. Since when does a face have to do with a physique contest?

I agree.

Padilla had the best overall package in 81. He should've won that contest, IMO of course

Noone was a worthy Mr.O that year, except Danny maybe, but he is like 5.2 or something, not that it should matter, but apparantly it did, or a feud with you Weider but I dont know. He was smaller than usual at tha contest too, I think he said he ate 40 grams of protein "to try something new".
Franco has a wierd body. He looks very massive in some shots, esp from the back. His upper chest might be the best ever. That said I think he has the astetics of a fridge and awful awful looking legs, sweep? cuts? anybody? I think he did leg extentions only for that contest after that accident in 1977 that held him back from training legs at all for quite some time.
Overall you really have to knock almost all the guys lack of leg development. You could not win a novice contest with that now. They can not have given their legs more effort then 3 sets of squats, a few sets of legextensions and at tops some leg curls on that. ed Corney could not do more than 8 reps with 3 plates in Pumping Iron and had to lie down on the floor and weep after that. Thats incredibly weak pondage. Guys today do that for their warmup.

I think it's important to remember that in the 70's up until platz came along big legs were not as important as they are today.  Basically it was all about the upper body.  It was only after guys like Platz and belknap came along that eveyone said "hey, look at that...I gotta get me some of those"  calves were always important because of the old theory that if you had good delts, abs and calfs you were halfway there but thighs and especially hams were not the be all end all that they are today.

1. Padilla
2. Callender
3. Platz
4. Dickerson
5. Columbu
6. Bannout,

I would place them like this.
Dickerson really had the worst arms of any Mister Olympia, Franco the worst legs ever. If Franco didn`t stop competing in 1976 and didn`t break his leg he could have been a legit Mr. Olympia in 1976-1979.

Viking:
That are good placements. I would place them identically.
