I was lifting yesterday and during one of my sets a sharp pain hit me between my right shoulderblade and the spine. I have been working out now for about 2 1/2 months after a long layoff and have been doing these types of exercises at least 1 time per week. This morning it hurt to raise my arm, it was almost like somebody had shot me with a .22. The pain has lessened and today is bicep day, I pondering if I should work out, take the day off, or just do cardio. Any advice, suggestions for maybe helping stretch the muscle back out to get it limber again?

I always work through it unless it gets worse.....which it very rarely does. Sometimes I have to take it easy, but I always work through it. I can't remember the last time I missed a workout because of an injury-related issue.

bicep day shouldnt hurt your back to much, i say hit it.

just do isolation exercises that won't strain your back... also, the best way to deal with pain like that is a nice little asian girl walking on your back... ;D

Classic pinched nerve caused by muscle spasms. Can you move your head without pain? Probably not. When you are training make sure to look straight ahead and not to the sides. Also outside of the gym be careful not to turn your head suddenly or awkwardly. Working out will actually get you loosened up and give you some relief. Take some over the counter anti-inflammatories and ice it down. The bad thing is onece you get a pinched nerve it usually flares up from time to time.

Could be any number of things; to some extent a good warmup can prevent that in future. With something minor that has already started to subside, IMO it's better to use indirect activity like cardio, sleep on it and see if it's better the next day. As opposed to the possibility of further aggrevating it with weights. Missing a workout by a day or two's irrelevant vs. the value of getting rid of it.
If serious pain were to persist more than a few days it would be time to see a doctor rather than relying on this forum.

My guess would be a pinched nerve also which has also happened to myself .I take the rest of the week off in a situation like that.If you really do have/want to train your bis I would say to do all your exercises seated as it will take out any swinging/momentum during your training & not possibly aggravate your condition further.Good luck

I had already stretched and ran a mile before beginnning my workout. I had already been working out for at least 1/2 hour, I don't understand it. I took yesterday off and I'm gonna hit it again today. It's still sore, but nothing like yesterday, it hurt to talk for awhile. Never experienced anything like this from working out.

Sounds like muscle spasms. Not a big deal. Ice, heat, and time should cure.
